She may be retarded, but I don't think Lady Gaga has Down's Syndrome. That's who we're talking about right? I haven't actually bothered to click on the link.

It made me wonder if it was supposed to be set in Philly, or if it just filmed there, because they refer to "Broadway" and "14th Street" in some scenes, but Philly has neither - what would be called 14th Street in Philly is actually named Broad, so no 14th or Broadway. Weird.

Animal Kingdom stuck Air Supply in my head for a week. Fuck you, Rain Dog!

Totally off topic but that is an awesome film.

Yes.
I liked it a lot but I had recently seen Harry Brown which people kept comparing it to and I didn't enjoy Gran Torino quite as much. Silly to let one film taint the viewing of another but I'm silly like that.
End of derail.
I sort of rolled my eyes at a lot of Gran Torino, but when it turns up on cable I find myself watching chunks of it, just because it's likely Eastwood's last performance. And I think senior citizens Blaze Of Glorying themselves for the good of society is a viable alternative to our country's social security woes.

I haven't seen Harry Brown yet.

I finally saw Up in the Air last weekend. Liked it a lot, even if the ending was a little to pat, which I realize is an odd way of describing the hero staring at a departure list with no idea where he's going.

Still need to see Inception.

I watched Sex and the Single Girl on AMC. It was cute! Tony Curtis is as gay as the day is long in it, though. Gay dude I was watching it with agreed. Gay.

Eastwood's "last performance" aside, I think the film is kind of terrible. Eastwood's one take method + non-professional actors = Some outrageously awful performances. Also, from the sound of his voice, Eastwood ate chunks of Christian Bale before each scene.

Agreed about the performances. I can't believe some people considered that movie "Oscar-baity", I had to roll with it as a comedy. It works a lot better that way.
I just wish Eastwood's relationship with the girl was more of a focal point than that wet blanket that was forced as a main character. At least it worked for me. And come on how can you not find Eastwood calling her dragon lady hilarious? I was laughing for minutes after that.
I'm willing to admit I have nostalgia goggles on, but I loved watching Eastwood spew racist shit at them Hmongs while pointing a shotgun at them. And his Bale voice is earned.

I mean, McQ ain't exactly a good movie but it's still John Wayne.

I just don't get it. Calling people retards on a forum is one thing. Some people get touchy about it and all, but hey, it's not like he was actually making fun of a legitimately handicapped person while doing it.

I have family with Downs, so needless to say it's an extremely touchy subject for me. Yet, it's one that I try to handle reasonably. I don't freak out everytime someone calls someone else a "retard" or describes an action/piece of art/etc. as "retarded."

And of course, everyone's different and some people just can't help laughing at the expense of a clearly mentally disabled person. Sadly, I have plenty of friends/acquaintances that engage in this.

But when that same person has been known to be so vigilant against one sort of hurtful humor/hate/etc., I just can't even process how they go from that... to the other.

Different strokes I suppose.
It's okay if Devin does it though. He worked with mentally challenged people!

And while many of you may take it as comedy, Eastwood in this movie is my stepfather. 100% It is my stepfather. The only thing that could have made it more my stepfather is if he were wearing a cowboy hat and shitkickers the entire movie.

Yeah, I'm all for Bale-voiced bigotry. Except when it's aimed at watermelons and fried chicken. I love watermelons and fried chicken and won't stand to see them mocked.

BTW, I have not changed my posting habits one bit since Devin left. I still post about movies just as often as I did before, and I spent a good deal of time today writing up a thread for ROGUE (2007) and posting it up. I think it's disingenuous to suggest that the board's focus has changed in the wake of Devin's departure

Just post the Rogue stuff in here, Kate.

I saw Rock Star for the first time. I was quite surprised at how much I enjoyed the film. I didn't realize it was set in the 80's until the montage. Goes to show you I've seen way too many 80's tribute bands in the 90's. Heck, I saw most of the 80's metal bands in the 90's.

I have about 100 HD movies on my DVR I need to watch.. I'll get there eventually.

Not sure what the difference is between .... though
post #72 of 103
Clint Eastwood was doing the Bale growl before Christian Bale even knew how to talk. And yeah, Gran Torino is completely a comedy. An ass-kicking, Boomer wish fulfillment comedy, but quite great, too.

I could cut and paste my thread, or link to it if you'd like, but I already had posted in the FILMS IN RELEASE OR ON VIDEO forum before seeing your message. Thank you for the suggestion though, Phil. My point was that anecdotally, the CHUD-munity(c) has not abandoned film discussion. I've seen plenty of movie related conversation and debate taking place since Devin's departure

Any of y'all tried Four Loko yet? It's kind of gross yet amazing.
I watched Che Part 1 and got all barred up. Not because I love Che, but because I love Benicio and Soderbergh. And the jungle. God I miss the jungle.

Also watched The French Lieutenant's Woman. Streep was very redheaded and kind of sexy but the hammy acting eventually wore me out and the story itself was booooring.

I have Che Part 2, Redbelt and 500 Days Of Summer in my sights.

Um...

What's this thread about again?

I've been watching Dexter obsessively over the last 2 weeks. Marathoned the first two seasons.

Great show so far.

....

To answer the initial question - Mean spiritedness for the sake of mean spiritedness is never funny. If you're going to make a joke using race or disabilities there has to be a point. If it's - "ha ha you're mentally retarded" Or "ha ha you're black that's why you like chicken so much" you're just being a dick and fuck you very much.

Erix have you tried Four Loko or do they not have it in your neck of the woods

I've been watching season 3 of True Blood. Feel free to mock me, I can handle it.

I have no idea what that is Jake. But I'm sure it isn't available here. The only American fast food establishments that exist here are Subway and Burger King.

I hope that PIZZA BURGER from BK makes it down here. I have this insatiable need to give myself a heart attack with that particular piece of shit as soon as possible.

Don't watch Che part 2. Stick to the good memories of Che part 1. Part 2 sucks.
Redbelt is decent, but lucks a little punch (no pun intended). 500 days of Summer is pretty good.

World of Warcraft patch 4.0.1 is available for public testing before it goes live. This build doesn't include all the new geography and low-level quest content that's coming with the Cataclysm expansion, but the changes to each class' leveling process is open for bug reporting and analysis. Looks like they're trying to do more to train new players on how their class performs in combat at an earlier stage, before bad habits can set in. Hunters start out getting their different trick shots much earlier, for example, with the melee strikes coming much later.

I've never even heard of it, is it a restaurant? Cause the west coast is way ahead of the east in both quantity and diversity of fast food type restaurants and chains.

I don't know...I kinda loved Redbelt. Really thought Ejiofor brought the goods with his performance, and the movie itself was wholly satisfying. Really want to watch it again sometime.

As for what I've been watching, I made my way through the first season of Breaking Bad finally, and I absolutely love it. Cranston deserves all the accolades that are being heaped on him, because he is incredible in that show. Just started season 2, and it's off to a great start.

I watched Insomnia for the first time and really enjoyed it but felt slightly let down by the ending.

Didn't count one "HOO HAA!" either, well done Nolan.

An alcoholic energy drink? That sounds awesome!

I've been bored of Red Bull and vodka for the past few years.

That, plus wanting to remain alive for a few more years, sort of put me off.

But I'd still try this Four Loko thing. At least once.

Oh... If energy drinks are your bag, may I recommend Acute Fruit? If you can find it... It's non-carbonated fruit juice with no sugar. (I believe they use stevia for the sweetening). It does the job and you don't crash and burn the way you do with Monster or Cyclone or any of that other garbage.

This is now my second favorite thread on Chud, by the way.

PS. Yeah - Sorry Chris. Can't drink the haterade for Dexter with you my friend. I'll eventually get around to Breaking Bad and we can be friends again though.

Bew. I have to watch it though, because it's Soderbergh and Benicio, and hope that you're wrong. (And I mean scientifically, objectively, fundamentally, empirically wrong of course. I'm not talking opinion here.)

I also saw a Brazilian film from last year called Histórias de Amor Duram Apenas 90 Minutos (Love Stories Only Last 90 Minutes to you gringos). Set in epically exotic Rio De Janeiro, lots of tits and ass and lesbian kisses and (non-lesbian) strap-on sex but the bohemian characters aren't easy to engage with and the story doesn't really have a satisfying arc. In fact it seems like the writer and director don't like their pretty, spoilt, boho lead guy much at all because they put him through the ringer.

That's fucked up, Clint.

Jake, they don't need shit like Loko in La Paz, they've got the Camino de la Muerte for excitement:

That's fucked up. I'm currently watching The Faculty. Back when Wood was pre-hobbit, Josh Harnett was pegged as a future A-lister and Robert Patrick was still only hired to emote SMOLDERING MENACE without really talking.

These actors sure drank a lot of water.
