The All-Purpose, IMPOSSIBLE TO DERAIL Thread

Thread Starter
I'm probably going to get shit for this, but it comes from an honest place and I couldn't really find a thread like it. Just a lot of derailed threads.

Earlier today, a thread was started that eventually devolved into people randomly posting things that had nothing to do with the initial post and it became a discussion about energy drinks and Clint Eastwood's Christian Bale voice in Gran Torino (not necessarily in that order).

Now, mind you, we do stuff like that over on The B Action Thread all the time. So I'm used to that.

My point is: I was having some fun in that thread but it was shut down before I could respond to something Ryan S posted, which was this:

Quote:
Jake, they don't need shit like Loko in La Paz, they've got the Camino de la Muerte for excitement:
And I wanted to say that you don't know the half of it. That picture may be kind of old. That used to be the only way you could access the Yungas section of La Paz. Now they have a much spiffier road with tunnels and bridges and everything. However, people actually choose to continue using this road.

To be fair, it's actually very scenic and beautiful with cascading waterfalls and a lovely view of the endless precipice.

As you ride down its serpentine path, you can take comfort in knowing that - were your car to stumble off the edge - you would never be heard from again; and your death, though gory and horrendous, would certainly be a complete one. You would be dead, dead, dead... No doubt about it. No paralysis, no surviving and starving to death... Just fucking dead and gone.

People like to ride it on BMX bikes. It's a popular tourist attraction for the backpackers that come here, go to the pub reeking of sweat, with open-toed sandals, grungy beards, and waxy hair they haven't washed in decades; and still get laid with horny Bolivians.

.......

Okay - call me self-indulgent, but I needed to get that off my chest. I now pass it over to you.

Feel free to respond to this specifically or take the conversation in another direction. The idea of this thread is talk about whatever. Have specific posts be the segue into something else entirely. I mean, I know I'm coming off like a jackass who's attempting to structure chaos (and will probably deserve it if Jake comes in to post that .gif of Seinfeld throwing his hands in the air and leaving) but I like the idea of a stream-of-consciousness thread about nothing in particular.

If you want to talk movies, for example, my post could act as an interesting conversation starter as to why Danny Boyle's The Beach is such a stupid fucking movie with completely putrid, unlikable characters who all deserve to die horribly.

Or... Just tell me to fuck off for doing this. The choice is yours.
Speaking for my own derail, I was posting, and will continue to post, about movies in the threads with the most traffic. I'm not really here for people's personal stuff, and I have a low ceiling for board culture stuff these days. We have Facebook and PMs for that.

So if the idea is "post what you want in this thread", I will tell you that the Mikey & Nicky transfer is a bit shit, roughly on par with a short film I made in 1993.
I think we tried this before, it didn't end well.
The Beach was ok, but yeah, all those characters can go fuck off. Especially Tilda Swinton's character. What a bitch.
Finally saw KINDERGARTEN COP. I gotta say, the stuff with Schwartzenegger and the kids was much funnier than I expected, but the actual cop stuff was rote and terrible in that early 90's way. And has there ever been a more bland, milquetoast lead actress than Penelope Ann Miller?

No, for real, do what y'all want save for bitching at each other too much. If anyone else objects, do whatever.
Stana Katic. YES!

I dont see anything wrong with a thread like this, as long as it stays civil.
I really, totally, and honestly do not see the point of this thread. Do you really not have enough outlets for unfocused discussion? Do you really feel stifled in that way? I'm honestly puzzled.

I'm a new moderator and don't want to overstep my bounds, so I'm not going to close the thread at this point, but this strikes me as just being willfully subordinate*. I'll leave the decision to JGB or Eileen.

*This isn't the right word I want to use, but I'm having trouble thinking of a proper synonym.

I think it sucks that Mikey and Nicky doesn't get more respect. Mind you, I've never had the chance to watch the whole thing. But the roughly half hour of it I did see suggest Elaine May making the best Cassavetes film that Cassavetes never made.

I don't really have an answer as to why I've never seen the whole thing. I've always wanted to.

I will eventually.

ETA: Don't take this personally Patrick. My initial intention was to start a thread specifically about The Death Road in La Paz... But, as I was writing that post, this other idea popped into my head. It wasn't intended as "fuck you for closing that thread I was enjoying."

But what happened in that thread reminded me that sometimes people need to fart. So, why not do it here and not derail other threads. Similar to what Devin intended with his Princess Kate thread.

*cue 10 pages of misplaced Devin Faraci-related bitching*

(please no)
I can see the usefulness of it in theory. I've abandoned a TON of posts because 1) they were random thoughts tangential to the discussion at hand and 2) they weren't strong enough to necessitate their own thread.

But that falls under the tenet of "Not every thought that pops into your head deserves its own post." This thread is the exact antithesis of that notion. I think what makes the CHUD Boards special is that we tend to (try, anyway) transcend the Typical Messageboard Bullshit. We're better than that. Let's be better than that. A little more self-moderation, a little less self-indulgence.
Post about movies in movie threads on a movie message board. We don't need a thread to post whatever bullshit comes to mind because that's what most people do anyway. And that's fine, and they're allowed to. But we don't need to talk about it, or give them more opportunities to.

Devin being gone seems like catnip for bullshit threads. I'm not calling you out, Erix, not shitting on you, your thread or your post, but go watch Mikey and Nicky rather than post about why you never finished it. You know?

That's exactly what I was getting at here. I guess you could argue that there is value in a whole thread about The Death Road in La Paz. But I'd rather just post a comment about it and have the 2 or 3 interested parties respond and move on. Since that's what would probably happen with such a thread.

I don't want to come off as self-indulgent. I guess my hope would be to have a thread where we can collect all our random musings instead of having "The 37th Thread About A Serious Topic Like Racism That Mysteriously Becomes About Roger Ebert's Favorite Sexual Positions."

ETA: If I could find a copy of Mikey and Nicky around here, you'd better believe I'd be watching it as we speak. Phil actually reminded me I need to haul ass on that one.

So you’ve got the B-Action movie thread for all of your free-association, wannabe stand up, schtick. Do we really need another thread for unfocused discourse? I mean I know you and all the other mongloids are proud of the B-Action thread, but do we really need it to expand beyond those confines.

When accusing someone else of being a mongoloid, it helps not to misspell the word.

I'm sure people like to think this, but this board probably has more messageboard bullshit than any I've ever posted on, and has cultivated new mutant strains of messageboard bullshit and claimed them as its very own. The torpedoing of threads via everyone teaming up and swamping all attempts to just talk about stuff with their self-fulfilling prophecies of inevitable failure is one of these. Yeah yeah I know I'm only adding to the hand-wringing nonsense with this, but gotta vent the spleen occasionally.

I was considering taking a short class about Film criticism with a known local critic but every time i delve into his review archives i find more troubling stuff.
He absolutely loved and still to this day stands by Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull, and today i found out via twitter he holds Ghosts Of Mars as one of Carpenter's masterpieces.

I'm reconsidering taking the class...

You hate the B-Action thread/guys. We get it. I've grown to appreciate your input and I've also learned to not be a petulant shithead to you (took me a while, but it ain't a problem now), but calling them out here is probably just going to invite/encourage more of the behavior that you can't stand. This thread ain't gonna kill the boards, and it's honestly not a hill worth dying on. Then again, I've been in the "if you can't stand it, just ignore it" camp for a while ever since Kate showed up and people started shitting up threads with how much they hated her instead of just letting it go and decreasing the likelihood of developing an ulcer due to people on the internet.

Yeah, you probably want to drop that class like it was a burning lump of coal.
I'm a Carpenter superfan and GHOSTS OF MARS is an affront to my soul. You should probably go at least once, though, just to get into an argument with him and bulldoze his taste in front of everyone.

I'm imagining this dude as a Latino Armond White who comes in all gacked out from a long night at a discoteca and just starts screaming at everyone about how Avatar changed the world before passing out at his desk.
I Can't believe there is a movie that does a "Crisis on Infinite Earths" with The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles!

More to the point I can't believe I just watched it.

And even more to the point I wasted time posting about it on here and on Facebook.

Well I guess it would depend more on how he expresses those opinions as to whether or not the class is worth taking. Sometimes being challenged is good for learning.

Then again... sometimes it's just an assclown with horrible taste. "Local" critic is a bit of a red flag.

I was a "known local critic" for a time, and I sure as shit wouldn't recommend taking any sort of class on film criticism from me.

That's awesome about the Road of Death, Erix. I find the whole idea of people taking a road because it could fucking kill them baffling and cool at the same time.

Local being used by me as "from Argentina". He's a well known critic for one of the major papers.

His taste in classics is almost impeccable though. And he loves loves loves The Phantom Of The Paradise. So i'm torn here.

I didn’t really imagine I was calling them out, I just said that having the entire board be like the B-Action Movie thread was probably not something you’d want to aspire to.
No, I get that part, trust me. I'm cool with the thread, but they've absolutely got their own brand of anarchy.

Regardless, I think the board's been pretty decent with self-policing in the past without needing moderators to step in and hold everyone's hand. I'm fine with one wacky thread (where, mind, movies ARE being discussed even if they're not completely my cup of tea) and one potentially wacky thread compared to the deluge of other on-topic threads probably won't be the death of the boards.

I think it's bullshit that Captain Kirk's born in outer space in NuTrek. He's supposed to be from Iowa.

You didn't imagine you were calling them out when you called them mongoloids? That sounds sincere.
Why was The Beach so bad? I mean, it was terrible (and I liked the book!). I watched it again less than a year ago and all I can remember is how terrible it was and how some stargazing scene made me want to punch my TV.
I don't know, but holy shit was it overbearing at times. I just liked it when I was a teenager because they were smoking weed.
I don't get it either. Boyle and Garland made a pretty good team later on and Boyle was a perfect fit to do it in the first place, but he fucked it up somehow. Kind of stupid that McGregor had a big feud with him over not getting to be in a crap movie, but fact is he was also a perfect fit, for the book anyway. I blame John Hodge, who I'm not convinced is all that good a writer.
Not to speak for Erix, but I think his point with this thread was that explosions of bullshit are inevitable, but maybe they can be detonated in a controlled environment. Futile, perhaps, but not mean-spirited.

Anyway, not having read the other thread that produced the photo, the first post mostly made me think, where the fuck is my fully loaded SORCERER blu-ray? My bare bones DVD is getting grooved from years of regular lasering.

Sounds like Bolivian film critic Pedro Susz.

He used to run the Cinematheque. The Avengers was one of "The Best Films Of 1998" He recently wrote a pan for a film that my father worked on. My father went on to respond to his pan...

It's in Spanish and as long as my arm, but check it out if you have the time.

Another popular attraction is the Inca Trail. A 3-day hike to Yungas covering much of the same ground. My uncle's best friend was killed on it when he got drunk and attempted to do handstands across a ravine.

If I could find that snapshot of him doing a handstand, I would post it here now.

Of course not. I will not rest until the entire internet is like The B Action Movie Thread! It's part of my evil plan to ruin everything for everyone.

......

In other news - I got really mad at my fifth graders yesterday and made a sarcastic comment to the effect of: My kingdom for an AK-47! ... They laughed so I'm sure they knew I was kidding. (A part of me was, anyway)

If I'm unemployed tomorrow, it will mean they didn't.

Life goes on.

Eh, I'd say take a shot then. I mean, you can learn something from anything if you look at it right.

Ha. I rewatched that for the first time since my teens and... holy shit. I realized that I'm actually not so big on Danny Boyle. And not just because of that film, of course. But The Beach is one of those I should've left in the past. Or maybe not because if I did, I'd still be going around saying, "Oh, I LOVE The Beach! It was deeeeeeeeeep, man."

Trevor gets me. Not only did that make me laugh like an imbecile just now... But it illustrates my "goal." Rather than have 100 threads like that, why not just throw all that bunk into one thread and leave it be.

This would make me want to take it even more. What makes this guy tick? As long as he has good reasons for what he's arguing, I'd be fascinated to hear his arguments. Why take a class with a critic that you're going to agree with all the time? Besides, that would never exist in the first place, nor should it.

PS - I kinda like Ghosts of Mars.

The movie bombed and was considered a huge financial disaster, a big blow to Friekdin's career. There never has been a tremendous need for it in film circles since it's essentially just a remake (although a damned good one). You won't find many people who prefer it to Wages of Fear (I do) so when looking for a film of its type, most folks just go for the original.

In short, not enough of a demand for it, unfortunately. Certainly not one with loaded features, etc.

My name showed up twice on there. Cool! I love Chinese food, and Arby's is actually pretty delcious now that I've been able to eat it again.

Friggin' hilarious, Trevor! I want to print that out and make a poster of that. Since I think we can all do without stuff like the "Chewer Bowl VII" which if it ever actually pops up (no pun intended) I hope the mods immedately delete that thread.
