Now that we have a group of committed mods on the boards, it might be a good idea for us to emulate what another board I frequent does. They have what they call a "Trouble Ticket" forum. In this forum the moderators post as individual threads any suspensions or bannings they mete out, including who, why, how long, and usually a link to the offending post. Discussion is allowed so long as it stays focused on the offending post and the action taken. This forum is also used for name change requests, thread closing/merging/deleting requests, and pretty much anything a mod would be asked to do.
Why is it a good idea? Because it keeps all the board admin crap out of the main forums. It's only visible to registered members, so visitors don't get to see all the dirty laundry. It offers some transparency to the mod process, while at the same time clearly showing examples of what's acceptable and what's not. And it actually leads to some good discussion of board behavior and philosophy, and has sometimes led to the mods reconsidering their actions and lifting bans or shortening suspensions in light of these discussions.
This other message board is built on the same vBulletin engine ours is, so I don't think it would be too hard to implement. I'm not going to fight to the death for this if no one likes it, but I thought it was something worth mentioning.
