That groan factor started pretty much right after The Village. Except for The Last Airbender, which just got apathy.

Shyamalan needs to face some serious director jail time.

I dunno if he needs director jail, as he is pretty good at mining atmosphere and tension, but he definitely needs to let his copy of Final Draft cool down. I haven't seen AIRBENDER, so I can't speak to it, but it seems like Shyamalan's writing is his kryptonite.

The writing is on the wall, DEVIL is going to bomb because of his name. I have doubts on this even getting released theatrically.

EDIT: Wait, has this not even been shot yet? If not, I have doubts of it even getting made.

Shyamalan isn't going to director jail anytime soon, no matter how much we may want him to. LAST AIRBENDER did bring in some money, regardless of quality - it's not being considered a flop in the way films like SCOTT PILGRIM or KILLERS are flops. I've heard the laughter when his name comes up in the trailer too, but I've also heard some excited talk after the trailer finished. I'm not saying DEVIL will be any big success but I'd be surprised if it didn't turn a profit.

The groans are most definitely not an isolated incident. I forget which movie it was (Inception maybe?), but when the trailer for Devil played and "from the mind of M. Knight Shyamalan" came on the screen there was massive laughter and groans from the whole theater (some of which came from me and my friends).

Saw a trailer for this before Scott Pilgrim. Might as well have been a trailer for comedy because the theater was cracking up as soon as Shyamalan's name came up.

Color me perpetually bored by any self-indulgent endeavors Shyamalan has up his sleeve, and wake me when he makes his second good movie.

I am intrigued by the reports of this happening so frequently. It was mentioned on another site (where it was pointed out that perhaps the pretentious "From the mind of..." before his name is a big reason for the laughter), and when I was in New York on vacation, I went to a movie and it happened there, too. The crowd in my native Toronto didn't seem to care, but I'm getting the feeling that at least America is no longer taking him seriously.

I don't understand how the content of the first paragraph relates to the first sentence of the second:

Quote:
This means it's Shyamalan himself, the very guy who engineered the concept and has his name all over the films, whose name raises questions.
How does the first paragraph, which did not address the subject of the director's star power but instead just talked about the title of the new film, mean that it's Shyamalan's name that raises questions?

Just a reading comprehension question, I feel like I missed something

Anyway, this is the first I've read (or the first I remember reading) that these Shyamalan films are being branded under the "Night Chronicles" label. For whatever reason, that tickles my funny bone. Maybe it's because the director himself has become something of a joke, I don't know. Maybe it's the fact that the studio thinks I'm supposed to react to the "Night Chronicles" name as if it's spooky and Shyamalan's involvement is a sign of reliable horror quality

PS Don't get me wrong, while I have not seen the trailer, I hold out hope for DEVIL

This right here is why the man keeps getting work. I daresay that most people would argue over what was the first good movie he made. And that argument keeps a wide enough audience interested in him to keep him going. And quite a few of those people are going to say he has one great movie under his belt and one passable/good film.

I wonder why M Night is taking a backseat to produce his ideas, instead of just writing and directing himself. I guess he's losing faith in himself? I mean he should be. But if the movies do well, he'll still get the credit since his names all over the thing, despite not writing or directing.

No it's a Branding exercise for M Night. He's like Hitchcock see? His name on a film shrieks "Quaaalllitty!"

Or pretentious bullshit

YES. Jason wearing his hockey mask on the stand, prosecution star witness Tommy Jarvis, and an evidence table littered with severed body parts. This is the future.

I had the same theater reaction each time I saw that trailer in the theaters and I saw Inception 3 times.

As for M.Night the mans last 10 years (after Signs especially which was his last good film i'd argue) if closely looked at have to be the blueprints for a directing career slowly being flushed down the toliet.

This is a guy who was offered the chance to write Indy 4 and had many other numerous opportunities thrown at him and continued to make personal pieces of studio garbage instead.

He is someone who should be throwing out ideas and have other people write and possibly direct that work.

Hard to believe that he's ready to be erased from existence film wise but it seems like thats happening fast.

One other thing after the train wreck that was The Happening how did he manage to land that Last Airbender gig anyhow?

My guess would be someone really 'liked' him and wanted to help him out. Maybe they figured an adapted children's animation story would be a way for him to break out of his 'suck'.

They were wrong.

Think is his films have made money. I think people see his bullshit pretentiousness for what it is (too bad he can't) but when you get down to it, people want to work with him. I suspect he's got a few more crap films to get out before he's done, and maybe one of them will connect with the public.
