Transformers the Movie: (1986) Appreciation thread

A thread mostly for me, Mike's Pants and Bobby Bear I suspect but open to all those who want to share the love.

Ok we know that there is no real plot and it kinda sucks that this was Orson Well's last role but damn it I still love this flick for no good reason. It's better than both attempts by Bay and is prehaps the ultimate guilty pleasure.

All I know is that if I go out in a blaze of glory I want "The Touch" playing as I do.

Better than TRANSFORMERS by Bay? Utter madness.

I actually like the first Bay flick but the second one is such a mess that overall the 1986 film wins out.

Though not technically a song, I have a special place in my heart for this one.

I've said it before Ken, when you're in charge, things will be glorious.

I enjoy Bayformers and detest Bayformers 2.

I have a love for Transformers the Movie that will never die.

Yeah the incedental music in the film is pretty good overall. The music during the battle for Autobot city for example is aces.
Oh man, Francis' link has got such a dumb grin on my face. Such a guilty nostalgia flick, but the soundtrack, action and cast just kick so much ass. Shits on Bayformers 2 by virtue of not being 3 days long and not a single awful stoned mum sequence.

Andy, you make me sad.

It was much much better. At least its story made sense for starters.

...and did Bays films have Eric Idle as a cockney leader of the Junkions, Leonard Nimoy as Galvatron and of course Welles? How about The Touch? Were Bays films brave enough to fucking kill Optimus Prime?

Transformers:The Movie for the win.

Rain Dog, and Scatman Crothers!!! SCATMAN CROTHERS!!!!!!

I love this thread so much I am going to explode.

How about the fact that it is set in "the year 2005", that is beautiful.

Well who knows what kind of magical world the future has in store for us all in that far of time - the worlds technology may be controlled with sprockets Mike - sprockets I tell you!

After working on this and Rocky IV Vince DiCola retired. Why? Because he had perfected music.

I dunno. I think it's strangely in character for Welles, with his healthy love of pulp, commerce and poetic irony.
'Megatron...is that YOU?'
'HERE'S A HINT!'

That moment alone is better than anything in the Bay films. I love that this thread exists.

Didn't Welles later dismiss it as a "toy commercial"?
I love how the music NEVER STOPS. It literally plays in the background from beginning to end.

I don't know of any other film (animated or otherwise) that has this daring stylistic innovation.

To be fair, they did kill him in the first act of the second one. But then they pussied out and brought him back.

To be fair, they also did this in the disappointing sequel to Transformers: The Movie. I'm sure you remember it. The Return Of Optimus Prime.

Speaking of which, how many of you actually sat in the theater crying like little 9-year-old pussies (which you probably were at the time) when Optimus Prime bought it.

*raises hand*

This is true. His "War" is the greatest piece of music to ever grace a motion picture soundtrack.

It might actually be the greatest piece of music ever composed by a human being.

Yep I cried like a little girl when Prime died. Seriously though you have the choice of Ultra Magnus or Springer for the next leader why the hell did Prime choose the crap one?
There is eldritch magick at work here. I must leave this place and never come back!
My favorite part was all the swearing. Like when Bumble-Bee and Spike were running away from something eating the moon, Spike says, "Shit! Now what are we gonna do?" That was awesome to my 12 year old ears.

And yeah, seeing all the old Autobots dispatched in such a callous and casual fashion messed me up good.

Seconded.

I will always maintain that the dialogue in this movie is better than any 90-minute toy commercial deserves.

Springer: "I've got better things to do today than die."

If I ever say anything half that badass in real life, I'll be surprised.

I thought he passed during production and Nimoy finished his lines, or is that just one of those enduring rumors?

I love how that pic of Rodimus has a handicap tag in the windshield. More proof that Optimus > Rodimus?

I didn't cry when Optimus died, but it blew my mind. Also count me in the holy crap they just swore camp.

It's funny how in G.I. Joe the Movie they tried doing the same thing with Duke but apparently public outcry over Prime made them change their minds and give Duke an offscreen survival with Doc's "Duke is out of his coma" or whatever it was line. Sorry, don't mean to derail by mentioning the Joes.

I'll also echo the love for the score.
All negative opinion of nostalgia aside, if you were the right age when this hit it was EPIC. The music, the deaths, a freaking robot Galactus as the main villain. Never did get to see it in the theater but I remember getting shivers when the trailer showed a beat up Megatron uttering "It's over, Prime.". And I will maintain till my dying breath that the Dinobots could smoke Devistator anytime.

As for it being a toy commercial? Yeah, all of those shows were. I still remember explaining to an uncle how some of the autobots had died in the movie and he chuckled and said "Ah, that's how they get you to buy new toys, huh?". I shockingly thought to myself "He's laughing and Ironhide is DEAD!". So yeah, score one for Hasbro marketing.
Bay's movie had YOU'RE A SOLDIER NOW which means it is better.
The music for this movie set new standards for epic AOR/cheese-metal, but as far as "Nothing's Gonna Stand in Our Way" goes I have to say I still prefer John Farnham's original from the Savage Streets soundtrack.

The New Bev had a midnight of the film a couple weekends ago. The screening was sold out, the voice actors who did Grimlock and Perceptor were there, print was gorgeous. What a night.

"First, Prime; then, Ultra Magnus; and now, you... It's a pity you Autobots die so easily, or I might have a sense of satisfaction now." Leonard Nimoy OWNS as Galvatron.

And chalk this up under movie stuff I only just realized: the child actor who played Spike's son, Daniel, also played Sylvester Stallone's son in "Over the Top."
I need to throw this out there. Spike's real name is Sam Witwicky.

That's the one thing Bayformers has going for it!
All joking aside...

That moment at the end, when Rodimus grabs the matrix... Light our darkest hour... And the music swells...

Legitimately rousing and epic.

Even when I saw it years later I thought it was a great movie moment.

Erix I am literally getting chills thinking about it.
We should (regardless of timezones) all watch this together someday. How cool would that be?

This thread is too beautiful to die.
I don't own it. But my friend does.

It can be arranged. EST for me. Preferably at night Mon - Thurs.

IN. I have it on video tape in my library somewhere. Unfortunately, it's the edited version (no swearing) but it'll have to do. Central time.

I am so in as well. Athough it will have to wait till I move into my new house as my DVD currently in one of many boxes.
Ha ha. I thought I would be laughed at for that. This is awesome.
Time is of the essence though here, this is a global network of Transformer fans here.
You know I think I was born a few years too late to watch Transformers when it was originally on the air, so for years this movie WAS Transformers for me. It wasn't until they re-aired the cartoon in the early 90's that I knew that all the Autobots that were straight up murdered in the first twenty minutes that I had assumed were just extras were actually major characters in the show. Ice cold, Hasboro. Ice cold.

Also, Rodimus Prime? Seriously, we're going to go with "Rodimus"?

EDIT: Count me in for that viewing. I've got the DVD.
Oh shit yes! Got dvd, GMT+2.
This was my most-watched movie ever until I discovered the original cast Trek movies, and later, T2. I kind of wish i had a counter built into me for how many times I've seen certain films, especially as a kid.

I haven't seen it in a good while. Is the version with "shit" even out on disc? My VHS only has Ultra Magnus saying "damn it" as I recall, and my once-amazing VCR is dead.
The DVD has a chapter stop specifically for when Spike says, "Shit."

Thirded. Upon review, I own this movie on VHS but not DVD. How can this be?!?

Dammit, the DVD is out of print.
