...and who can forget Weird Al Yankovics Dare To Be Stupid? So much eighties childhood awesomeness crammed into this one film. Bay can blow up all ths shit he wants - did he have Weird Al? No? FAIL.

Ah yes. I forever curse not buying Mystery Science Theater Volume 9 before it went out of print. Fortunately, I got the version of Volume 10 with Godzilla vs. Megalon before it was pulled.

Yeah, Nimoy, Welles, Yankovic. This movie beats Bay's by a mile.

In one of his last interviews the interviewer asked what he was working on and he said he was recording lines for "a toy movie", that he couldn't remember what it was called but it was about "toys who do horrible things to each other."

I don't have the same nostalgic connection to this movie or franchise (Ghostbusters was the most violent Saturday morning cartoon I was allowed) but I always thought "A movie about toys who do horrible things to each other. -Orson Welles" would've been a great pull-quote for the poster.

Stranger still, Optimus hands off the Matrix to Ultra Magnus when he's on his deathbed. But when the shit hits the fan, Prime's ghost or something appoints Hot Rod the leader.

What? Did Prime decide to hedge his bets from the grave?

I always took that as Prime not knowing Hot Rod was "the one" untill he was one with The Matrix. (I have thought to much about this film).

I think one of my biggest gripes with Revenge of the Fallen is that when Sam figured out how to use it "The Touch" should have started playing.

I quite agree, but it would have been a Linkin Park cover if they had done that.
That would have been a great little nod, even if was just subtly hinted at in the score.
I am one of you sad bastards that love and adore the film as well. Its hard to explain but its one of those nostalgic pieces of my childhood I just haven't shaken.

It was the first film I saw in a theater by myself as a kid (my mom refused to watch it) and yeah I cried when Prime died and after the film was so pumped I just stayed in the theater watched the ushers clean the theater they watched me but said nothing (I was a cute kid) I stayed and watched it again. A memorable experience needless to say.

I missed that New Bev showing and regret it. Enjoyed Bayformers (truth be told sitting in that theater in 2007 hearing Peter Cullen's voice in the opening scene pretty much cemented my devotion to that movie it sounds so damn geeky but I can't help but confess I felt that way) and hated Bayformers 2.

Right. It isn't Optimus' decision but rather The Matrix of Creation's. Least that's my 2 energon cubes worth.

I love how that pic of Rodimus has a handicap tag in the windshield. More proof that Optimus > Rodimus?

I didn't cry when Optimus died, but it blew my mind. Also count me in the holy crap they just swore camp.

It's funny how in G.I. Joe the Movie they tried doing the same thing with Duke but apparently public outcry over Prime made them change their minds and give Duke an offscreen survival with Doc's "Duke is out of his coma" or whatever it was line. Sorry, don't mean to derail by mentioning the Joes.
It was a Snake through the heart too, Thulsa Doom would be proud. Pity he got better.

The film also was when Grimlock and got more childlike and less blunt, arrogant asshole.

Ah yes but it is also the film where after the death of Prime he suddently decides he is leader of the Autobots which I alwasy thought was cool. Espcially as no one told he he wasn't.
I watched this last summer for the first time in years and was surprised how much more enjoyable I found it than either of the Bayformers movies.

Group screening, I would need to get ti from Netflix but I'm totally in. It's a shame it's not on Watch Instant.

when Optimus is about to hand it off, he drops it and Hot Rod touches it first...there is a weird glow and then he hands it back to Robert Stacks bot.

I think that glow is mostly for the audience so we'd know that Judd Nelson and not Robert Stack was the real Autobot leader.

And I can't believe I'm about to get this nerdy, but isn't it the Matrix of Leadership?
Fuck I love this movie. Awesome score. I watched it a few years after it came out on VHS when I was a kid, I had already seen a lot of the normal series by that time so seeing the big guns Prowl, Ironhide, Ratchet all die was just weird and confusing, it wasn't just that they died, but they died within the first 10 mins and quite brutally especially for a cartoon which were pretty safe back in those days. After that it was pretty hard to find a copy, though I remember growing up that people loved it because it was so ballsy and dark for a cartoon.

Optimus' death was sad and even today is a great death scene, the music is just awesome.

I saw it a few years ago before I finally bought the Rhino edition with Pat Lee's cover and I watched it with a few friends and we noticed that it's action packed, it doesn't stop. And it's still a great entertaining movie and if it was translated to live action would probably be better than Bay's first movie. Bayformers 2 was one of the most horrendous wastes of cash I've seen.

My favorite part is still when Optimus says "megatron must be stopped, no matter the cost" and he transforms and 'you got the touch' plays and Optimus proceeds to take out every decepticon in an Iconic unstoppable fashion. It's mythic and just awesome. And yeah when Hot Rod become Rodimus and you hear Optimus' voice, it's just epic, no matter what it's a great epic moment that would be epic in any type of myth or adventure story.

I have to say that this thread probably has the smartest transformers fans I've seen. Honestly go on tfw2005.com and you'll find some of the stupidest people you may come across.

Count me in for the group viewing. Who is organizing?

You're right. Guess it's time for me to dust off the flick with the rest of you during the watchalong.
Guys I'm serious about this, I really thought I was alone in loving this.
If this watchalong happens I may cry. I think, realistically it may be easier to stagger it by time zone. Is that more feasible? I'm drunk.

Oh, I'm not saying the booze soaked Welles was actively happy about doing the movie; more that if you had shown prime-era Welles this movie and said "this is gonna be your last film", he would've gotten a kick out of it.
True story, I just put Transformers in THEN TOOK IT OUT because I want to watch it during this watch-a-long.

I'm committed to this guys.

Mike: Do you have any plans for the group viewing of this?
Nobody calls Soundwave uncrazzamatic!

I would love to watch the movie with you guys. I'm definitely in. Please make it happen.

I was thinking about that. Is everyone still up for it?
I'm wondering if maybe we should stagger it to accomodate the different timezones? Or does that mean I'm completely un-hardcore?

How about if everyone pop down their preferable times and days and will try and synch up with each other.

We're all in this together now. We must keep this thread alive.
I'm on PST and am generally good most of the day. Just tell me the date and time and I can be pretty accommodating for those with trickier schedules.

Until the day... when all are one.
Central time here. Monday through Thursday, I'm probably available to watch it sometime after 7pm. Saturday and Sunday, I could probably fit it in at any time.
i saw it with my best friend when we were kids - when ironhide got killed in the first assault he stood up and shouted NOOOOOO!!!!!!!

a piece of him died that day.
Showed it to someone who had only seen the Bayformers film and he enjoyed those movies but said this was better. Wow another convert hard to believe for me but the film really has its charm.
EST. Monday, Wednesday or Sunday evening would really be the best for me.

Also - Saturday mornings until noon.

.....

I actually think a Saturday morning would be very appropriate.

A weekday at 4:30 would be too. But impossible for me.
Remember everyone...

We can make this happen!!!

I love this movie, glad to see I'm not the only one. I also think Unicron on this movie is 1,000 better than what we ended up with for Galactus in the F4 movie.

I drew this in our MS Paint Art thread a while ago;

I still get chills from that painting. You were a beast in that thread, Capitan.
I got it in from Netflix! I'm in the Eastern Time Zone. I could make this work basically any week night after 6 and really Saturday or Sunday morning would be kind of perfect. I usually wake and bake and either watch a movie or get caught up on my DVR before I work out anyways.

I'm out of town all next week though.
Saturday morning really IS pretty perfect.
I think a we are agreed on a Saturday morning.
I think that everyone getting up at the same time will be a pain

Perhaps a vote is in order:

Shall we stagger it? Have you good folk in America watch it at say nine EST and the guys in the UK watch it at nine GMT?
I can't speak for everyone else but 9 eastern is perfect for me. I could go earlier too if it was necessary I'm an early riser but that would be even earlier for the people on the west coast.
That'd be 8 Central for me. I'm game.
That'd be 6 am for me! Hahahaha. I'll do it! Just tell me when it's all set in stone. And I'll set my alarm. This is all happening in the CHUD Chat Room, right?

Sorry I'm late, Ken. I picked a bad couple of days to be too busy to make the regular rounds...

I've probably seen this movie as much as any. When I was about 6/7, I used to rent this pretty much every day after school, to the point where the fella who ran the Mom and Pop video shop just let my Mum buy it for me. No-one else had a chance to rent it anyway. I still have the VHS in question...

Apologies for the blurry webcam photo. The little orange circle that's ripped up in the corner is the sticker from the video shop.

Please, don't turn on me for this - because I mean it with no disrespect, but it's "I've got better things to do tonight than die." A slight difference, yes, but one that radically increases its awesomeness.

Being late to the party and all, I felt I should show my credentials. Hopefully, that took care of it.

Very well said.

Also, I've always loved Megatron's "I'll rip out your optiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiics!" It still holds the power to menace, even after countless viewings.

Saturday at 9 is perfect for me.

It may not be translating, but I think I'm as excited as you are, mate!

Saturday morning any est before noon is fine for me.

For you gents, I'll get up early and deal with the hangover. It will be worth it.

I have my surgery on Friday so this weekend is a bust, unless you want "still high on morphine" Ken to join the party.
I'd much rather that we figure out a way that we can ALL be watching. TIL ALL ARE ONE, dammit!

I've always loved Welker's delivery of the line, "Their defenses are broken! LET THE SLAUGHTER BEGIN!!!" Right as Devastator is tearing Autobot City a literal asshole...
Bobby, I was getting seriously worried but you have arrived and arrived in style. I don't have the proof but I too had that video gems VHS copy. Now I have to watch on DVD. it's shiny and all sure, but I kinda liked the graininess.

Ken, This IS your party. There will be a brief Transformers watchalong delay until Ken is fighting fit. Although... "high on morphine Ken"... God speed your Emminence.

We're agreed that Saturday morning is good. Now to narrow down a time.
McNooj where are you based sir?
I'm on Pacific Standard Time. But as I said before, my schedule can be pretty accommodating. I can stay up pretty late.
Well if you yanks do the Saturday morning thing that leaves me open to watching it late on the same Saturday night to match up with y'all. So there'll be some drunk nostalgia comin' atcha from down under thats for sure.

Still I'm game - just not this weekend.
I agree that we should wait until everyone can do it.

Also... How, exactly will it work? Chatroom? This thread? (Posting and refreshing constantly....) What will the mechanics be?
Depends on whether or not we want to save everything for posterity.
I say do it in here.
Ha, yeah. I want to be able to re-read through the craziness whenever I want!
If we're holding off on this weekend I'm unavailable the Saturday after, what does everyone think about Saturday the 16th?

Anyone fancy getting drunk on a saturday morning?

Courtesy of Tom, but have I have added a few myself

The Transformers: The Movie Drinking Game

One drink whenever:

Any Transformer (or group of Transformers, for safety’s sake) transforms.
You get annoyed at Daniel.
Grimlok says “Me Grimlok.”
Arcee flirts or acts motherly.
Starscream shoots himself in the foot
EVERYTIMESomeone says ba weep granah weep mini bon

Two drinks whenever:

Spike swears.
Ultra Magnus swears.
A character uses a word that small children likely won’t understand (use discretion).
Springer or AstroTrain transform (yay Triple Changers!).
Unicron tortures Galvatron.
Stan Bush sings the words touch, power or dare.
When Springer says "I've got better things to do tonight than die"

Three drinks whenever:

A character from the 1984 Toyline is killed or is shown dead.
Devastator is formed.
The Dinobots are shown in robot mode.
Snarl (the Dinobot Stegosaurus) is onscreen.
Optimus Prime arrives at the first battle and whips ass.
Astrotrain complains

Finish your drink or do a shot when:

Optimus Prime dies.
Hot Rod becomes Rodimus
Jesus Mike, we'd all be dead within the first fifteen minutes mate.
