Transformers the Movie: (1986) Appreciation thread - Page 14

Honestly, as great as reading back is, it's no reflection of how fun it was to participate. I'm gutted Judas, Rain Dog, Francis, and everyone else couldn't make it or had to leave early. I guess it was just one of those things after we locked in the date. It created its own problems. Sucks we didn't have a full compliment, but I think everyone did their part to make up for it. Kind of like an "in their other" sort of thing.

I actually have a lot of time for Bay's first. In a very different way, of course. It's bloated to the point of a joke almost, but still fun. The "boy and his car movie" aspect Spielberg loved so much is the best part.

Part of me wishes someone with 500 million to blow would create a live action version of this movie with the same script and voice actors (tweaked here and there to update it). Or....maybe not.
Just another thing to look forward to from Ken's glorious new Empire.

Am I right, m'liege?

Yeah, I'm sorry guys, wish I'd have been here but I've spent all day in a rather tight-consuming chess match with a surprisingly functional skeleton in a black robe. I'll be reading the thread anyhow.

It was a great time, and it's a huge shame that there were some who couldn't join. Same time next week guys?

Watching it I sort of got a new respect for what Bay did with the first one, in that it couldn't have been easy establishing a franchise like this and keeping balance. It's entertaining. But once the franchise had been established I just can't understand how Revenge of the Fallen happened.

I do think we should try and make this a semi regular thing, as already suggested. But prehaps with a different movie next time?
I was thinking about it... The decision to kill off all those characters was absolutely based on the crass commercialism of wanting to promote new toys, while discontinuing their current line (or phasing it out, in any case). But it "accidentally" gives the movie thematic heft and resonance.

.....

You have a good point about the first Michael Bay movie Pants... It isn't as bad as the second and it manages to pull off the tricky balance of pleasing the fan base while making it palatable enough for mainstream audiences to get the concept.

The action scenes are a mess, but the film engages you by making the relationship between Sam and the Autobots feel grounded.

They completely jettisoned any sense of human connection for the second one, deciding instead to make it about the incoherent action scenes.

ETA - I'd be willing to do a watchalong of another film with you guys.

I do think we should make watching this movie a kind of tradition, though. Particularly since many didn't get a chance on this go round.

with this paticular movie, it should be an annual thing. Chuds Internation Day of Animated Transformers

but yes, we should do this again, sooner, with different movies.

and perhaps moving the time ahead an hour or so, so use west coast chewers arn't up so late(early)

Agreed on both counts. And if possible a Sunday would be a better day.

Absolutely spot-on, man. I watched it again yesterday (the first) and it's still entertaining and looks great. The length is just excessive, though. There's a 90-100 minute cut in there somewhere that doesn't compromise on the solid human comedy stuff (and loses the not so solid comedy) while also delivering all the rock 'em, sock em' action necessary. It's just not the one we got at the pictures.

It's great to see others saying this, and about CHUD International Transformers Day!
So what movie would be ideal for this kind of watch-along?
Commando.
Re-Animator.
Robocop.
Ghost Busters.
Flash Gordon?
Ghostbusters would be terrific. The recent Punisher Warzone love in had me hankering for that as well.
I'm down for both of those like you read about.
I must say, this thread was an absolute joy to read. I sure wish that life had allowed me to join you guys yesterday, but oh well...

'Ghostbusters', 'Flash Gordon', and 'Commando' would all be awesome choices for the next group watching session.

Finally got a chance to sit down and catch up on what I missed with the movie and the thread. I may have missed most of the big day, but I had so much fun being able to at least make part of it.

This whole thread has been so great and full of enthusiasm, no matter what movie is picked for next time I'm definitely gonna be there.
Hey ... I reverted to my former avartar. So to speak.

But I went back and edited the first post in this thread where I announced the change (on page 5) and inserted the avatar I used into the post. For posterity. But also so it will be easily accessed for next time we do this.

You all might want to consider doing the same thing.

As for the next watchalong? I'm about to propose we have a Die Hard watchalong on The B Action Movie Thread - what with Christmas coming along and all.

I haven't made the announcement yet, but you are all invited in advance.

(Actually, by the time you read this, the announcement will probably have been made. Cheers.)
So sorry I couldn't make it, folks. My Saturday got filled up quicker than I could keep track of. I will most definitely be going back through and reading all of the fun stuff I missed. And I am most certainly up for the next one.

Might I recommend The Goonies?

I... must have missed something... Okay, maybe not then.

No worries, Don. I'm on record as being a hater of 'the Goonies', that's it. I don't disagree that it could be a worthwhile entry for a group-watching experience, but I won't be partaking of the experience. No malice was directed towards you.

Just had a chance to read back over the awesomeness. Standing ovation chums.
I love the bit at the end. Everybody (myself included) forgot that it just ends like that.

Better total bastard kill:

Megatron's "Such heroic nonsense." Ironhide kill

or

Galvatron's "Here's a hint!" Starscream kill?
Both great bastard kills for totally different reasons!

One the killer is a bastard.

The other, the victim is a bastard.

Meagtron is just putting down a tired old dog - it was a mercy killing. Galvatron is killing a legend.

Best overall kill is Ultra Magnus being wasted by The Sweeps.
yea, seriously. fuck magnus
Does Magnus even put up enough of a fight to warrant the term "wasted?" I mean, I know where you're coming from Ken, but the dude just gets OUSTED so effortlessly... it's almost a non-event.
He couldn't deal with that right then! Trying to open the Matrix whilst minding the lasers!? Pfft. The dude seriously can't multitask. He can give tasks to multiple people though...
Especially when it involves extending his own life at the expense of other, worthier warriors.

Yep, that's Ultra "one thing at a time" Magnus for ya.
Robert Stack's voice really does suit Magnus' personality.
The irony of a man named Stack (plural) voicing a "soldier" so ill-equipped to handle multiple responsibilities is too delicious to ignore.
Everything about this film is genius, I tells you.

It's in keeping with the tradition. Everything Ultra Magnus does is inconsequential and irrelevant. Why should his death be any different?

Notice that there is not much of a big deal made about his glorious resurrection either.

The movie doesn't even pretend that you give a shit.

It seems very well aware of what a useless fuck-up he is.
The way I'd describe Magnus' death is by comparing it to someone on a toilet straining their hardest to get a real steamer out... and suddenly have a bunch of frat boys come and poke at him at his most righteous moment.

UUUUUUUHNG!!!

And then he explodes.

He does take a lot of shots before going down. None of them blast through him. Not the way Megatron's blasts went straight through Prowl, Ratchet, and Ironhide. Dude can't even die right.

EDIT: And just because...

I see now where I erred: expecting anything other than disappointment from Magnus.

That one guy who got dropped into Unicron's purple lava cauldron. Now there's a Bot who could buy it in style!

I'm wondering if Prime was delirious when he was dying and mistook Magnus for another Autobot on his death bead, Spinger for example.
Hopped up on energon goofballs... or somethin'.
Ultra Magnus asks not what he can do for Cybertron, but what Cybertron can do for him.
Only in his dreams...

I don't know how someone that tall can trip over a Decepticon, but somehow Magnus pulled it off.
Magnus is both schlemiel and schlimazel. Such a howdy-doodad.
It's nice to know that there are some people that appreciate Ultra Magnus to the point of making tributes like those pics.

I don't really trust these people nor think I want anything to do with them. But it's nice to know they exist. I believe in harmony. Even Ultra Magnus deserves fandom.

I'd like to meet those people, so I know who they are come the revolution.

You may ask yourself, "Would someone who didn't see the film as a kid and who never played with Transformers be able to enjoy this ludicrous film?"

The answer is yes.

Well slap my ass and call me a Junkticon - I had no idea there was a video for this...
