I can't remember what the Giants status was like at that time but I vaguely recall they had several good players. Now at least SD and NY were picking high but the Steelers got Ben around 14 or so, so it's not like they had a horrendous year before.

Also, I bet that Rodgers would not be having the same career path as he has now if he was drafted by the 49ers. There's something to be said for sitting for a year or so and learning the pro game behind a proven QB. The way a team is put together and run have a huge impact on how a QB plays (we have a qb, should we draft O-line to protect him or another WR? WR!!!).

I still believe that if Carson Palmer and Roethlisberger's teams were switched Palmer would be sitting on a few rings and everybody would be wondering if it was time to trade Ben.  The QB is a big piece, but still just one piece.

I tend to agree with the Carson Palmer/Big Ben comparison. The guy really got screwed getting picked by such a shitty organization. There was a time when it looked like he could overcome being stuck with the Bengals, but that injury he suffered in the playoff game against Pittsburgh really doomed his career.  He'll never end up living to expectations and they're not going to trade him like he wants, so he'll be nothing more than mediocre for the foreseeable future.

I tend to agree with the Palmer/Ben opinion, and I'd say that Rodgers would have been impressive on the 49ers as well. Rodgers was simply the best QB in that year's draft. Would he have a ring if he'd been a 49er? No idea. But I'm fairly sure he'd still be successful, and Alex Smith would still be a rung below mediocre.

And really, the 49ers have had a pretty solid team the last few years... except for being abysmal at QB. Picking the wrong QB kills a franchise for 5+ years, more if they're stubborn about forcing that pick to turn out right. Green Bay got lucky in having Rodgers fall to them, but SF can only blame themselves.

I don't know.  Look at Favre's last year with the Packers, best year with them since 1997.   McCarthy designed that system so that any QB will have success.  Not taking anything away from Rodgers, because he truely is awesome, but look how will Matt Flynn did against the Patriots, for all intesive purposes, the Packers should have won that game, they had three shots at doing it.

fleed, you may have a new old TE in Jeremy Shockey.  Contain your excitement.

Even though he's injury prone with his best years behind him, he's still an upgrade over Fasano.

Well, time is ticking down, and after the judge's ruling in favor of the players regarding televising the 2011 season (or not), unfortunately I think we're going to see some sort of a lock out/work stoppage in the NFL for 2011.  They'll still have the draft, but free agency will probably be very quiet.  Coming off a hugely rated Super Bowl and doing nothing but gaining momentum as "America's Game", this is not the time to let it end, even for a couple of months.

We might see a lock-out but I'm not sure it will last very long.  Without the TV money, there is not enough revenue to keep the lights on for the owners and that can be a powerful motivator to get a deal done.

Martianman, Angles, I agree with both of your points about...Jeremy Shockey!  He just might be the...Jolt, the offense needs in the red zone.  I still say, that the Miami GM, shouldn't be trying to add...more picks, as he should be moving up to get a...QB!  If Miami sticks with Henne, and he doesn't improve, then a...New GM, Head Coach, and QB will be arriving for the, 2012 season.

No reason to get it done right now.  Owners won't lose any money untill the TV Season begins, and the players already don't like doing to OTA's and such.   A deal will get made, most likely sometime in July.  Seems like every major deal always get's pushed back to the 11th hour, and this will be no different.

Martianman, Angles, Jeremy Shockey sent a...Jolt, to Miami, and has realized there is no place...FineA, Than CarolinA!

Skins signed safety Atogwe, previously of the Rams. According to his stats he's a good player but that might be because the rest of his team sucked for a few years. Anyone from the South care to set me straight? It's a little over 5 million for 5 years, a decent price because mainly, we didn't give up three draft picks for the man.

Greed is Good in NFL Labor Talks

Haven’t read Simmons regularly in quite some time, but that was a fun little read.

Best of luck, Tiki.

Yeah, what's up with that?  I saw an article talking about how he and Ronde wanted to play together just one year in their NFL careers, so him going to Tampa wouldn't surprise me.  And that's the thing--he already had to have at least one team interested for him to come out of retirement, right?

um... sure?
