At least three or four.

The TV money for those 2 extra games is what the league cares about, not the gate revenue that you're talking about people ponying up for.
Well, we'll pony up for it in the sense that we will watch, even though in this case most of us feel less is more.

I remember the USFL had an 18-game season, but I can't remember what kind of toll it took on the players.
Is it wrong that I loved the USFL so much? Or was it just because I was like 15-16 years old when it was around?
Oh no, the USFL was awesome. The Bandits regularly out-drew the Bucs in Tampa, and the success of the Bulls in Jacksonville was a major reason why the Jaguar eventually came into being. Problem was they expanded too much too quickly, and owners like Trump in New Jersey simply saw the league as a way into the NFL. If they had stuck to their spring/summer format and not decided to take on the NFL, they'd have probably stuck around.

How many families could everyone feed if we dumped everything in our lives that wasn't necessary and donated the remainder to charity? The NFL and players do all right by charity.
I will argue that the 1985 Jacksonville Bulls were a more talented team than the 2010 Jacksonville Jaguars.
I'd argue any Tampa Bay Bandits team was more talented than any Buccaneers team from the same time.

That league had some great nicknames too: Bandits, Gamblers, Gunslingers, Renegades, Maulers, Invaders. They weren't messing around.
I was in a photography class in high school around that time, and we were learning how to do silk screens on t-shirts. My single color screen was a black Bandits picture on a red shirt, and my multi-color was the Bulls' logo on a white t-shirt. I think I may still even have them tucked away somewhere. I daresay, my Bandits shirt looked exactly like a "pro" shirt. I even had folks ask me where I bought it from when I would wear it. Gary Anderson was a bad ass RB. I loved the Bandits (yes, even with Spurrier), Bulls, and Birmingham Stallions, and by default (being a Steelers fan), the Pittsburgh Maulers.

And the USFL was where I learned Bobby Hebert's last name was pronounced "Hay-bear". I always thought the announcers were saying "Hey there..." as he dropped back.

That's a pretty cool logo.

Here in Indianapolis, we had to "steal" another cities team.

So...people bought that stuff...ha
Did you guys see the 30 for 30 special about the USFL? It was pretty great, though the Simmons cameos were a little too much.

I had the pleasure of attending the infamous Maulers-Stallions game as my first pro football game. Details here: http://www.oursportscentral.com/usfl/maulers.htm But when it says "throw things," what the fans actually threw were iceballs left from snow that hadn't been removed from the stands. It was pretty spectacular.

And has any other "professional" team ever wore purple and red? I can't think of one, in America at least.
I actually made it to a Jacksonville Bulls game once. Don't remember who they played, but I do remember that I pretty much was able to move to any seat that I wanted to after about the 1st quarter. Sort of similar to going to a Jags home game these days, I'd wager.
I guess I could use a Tarp joke here, but naw..that's just mean. I've been to Pacer games in the 80's where they used a "curtain" around the upper decks so you can't see all the empty seats.
One casualty of the USFL is that it derailed what could have been the greatest college football coaching career of all time –

Here's to you, Howard.

He had a burger place in South Florida that was actually pretty damn good. It closed a while back I think, but for a couple of years it was our go-to sports bar.

I just moved to LA, how big of an NFL town is this?

Well, considering the lack of an NFL team of course..well, for the time being.

It's my understanding that LA is too cool for the NFL. They've had multiple teams over the years and never really cared too much. There's a reason the second largest television market doesn't have a team.

And if you think it's because the teams weren't winners, I point to any number of other cities (KC being my own experience) that support the team regardless of whether they're winning or not.
LA is a terrible football town. I lived there for most of my adult life. The Raiders fan run deep though...they are really big in the Latino community, but the town is dominated by basketball.

Football could succeed there...and it has, but LA is the classic "too much to do" scenario that keeps people disinterested in pro sports and mainly fair weather fans.

Yeah, but in LA's defense, what else is there to do in KC?
The time I was out there in the fall, it looked like there was still some Rams support scattered around different bars, too.

Sure. Given that my in-depth knowledge of the NHL playerbase comes from NHL '95 on Sega Genesis, I should do well, right?
God the Saints look flat.

It's weird watching football at 10 am. I like it. :-).

I got dibs on Mogilny.
The Saints want to hurt me in my suicide leage. ass holes.

I'm calling it now-Buffalo Bills 0-16.
Bring in Kolb.

Oh well, I got 2 weeks out of Vick on my fantasy team before he got hurt. Looks like either a broken collarbone or rib(s).
This is only going to hurt more in the end when Indy comes back to win this game against the Jags.
Ok, so it turns out Kolb is just bad. Foolish of me to trust Reid.
Jags just kicked a 60 yard field goal to beat the Colts as time expired.
59 yd FG. Are you shitting me? Horrible way to lose in suicide pool.
Unbelievable. No matter what happens this offseason, at least Josh Scobee knows he has a job.

The last two passes thrown by David Garrard in that game are a complete microcosm of how up and down his career has been. Needing to get into FG range, he lasers a 22-yard out patters to Tiquan Underwood. But with 11 seconds left and needing just to get a few yards over the middle, he backs up in the face of the interior pass rush and floats a ball of his back foot to the sideline that was lucky it wasn't picked off by Kelvin Hayden.

Garrard has given this franchise some of its best moments since the '99 playoff run, but he's also given them some of the lowest lows. I'll go on record now as saying that Trent Edwards starts a game at some point this year for the Jags.
No matter how bad the Jags are in any given season, they always play the Colts hard. Just too many damn mistakes in that game. Plus, of course that 59 yard field goal was going to be made. Scobee has made a career making this kind of shots againt the Colts.
Weird day. I turned off my radio thinking the Steelers had won, then turned it back on in time to hear Flacco throw the winning TD. Falcons & Saints both have problems with 0-fer teams, and the Browns beat the Bengals. Colts lose to the Jags on a 59 yard FG, Max Hall is now playing QB for Arizona, and the St. Louis Rams are NFC West contenders. Is this week 13 already?
Cutler is driving me nuts. Bears OL isn't good enough to hold the ball as long as he does. If the Giants didn't suck it be more than 3-0.

This game is boring.
How is this game still 3 - 0?! The Giants D is just killing Cutler..

tcjsavannah, no offense, but I hate your avatar. ;-)

It was nice to find a sports bar here in West Hollywood that was full of NFL fans.
Met a few Colts fans and even made nice with some Raiders fans.
Looks like Cutler is gone. Wiley veteran Todd Collins is taking the field. Look out, Giants!
OUCH He took a hit. Still 3 points?!
Am I the only one who wants to rip Reed's leg off and beat him to death with it?

We beat ourselves. Dumbass penalties. The Ravens played smarter. They deserved to win.
And the Bears are down to their 3rd stringer.. Caleb Hanie. Who?

EDIT: MoonBaseNick, glad you like it
How was that hit on Collins not some kind of late hit?
With todays games that leaves the Kansas City Chiefs as the only undefeated team.

1) Congrates to everyone who made the Vegas bet that KC would be the final team without a loss this year, enjoy the millions of dollars you just won.

2) Got a feeling that this will be the first year in a while where no team threatens going undefeated. It seems like for a decade there was always one team (often being the Colts) that would go 12-0 before losing a game.

There's a reason they didn't sign him to a new contract. They'll either draft someone or sign a new FA in the off-season.
If someone had told me at the beginning of the season that the Steelers would be 3-1 heading into the bye week, I'd be ecstatic. After watching yesterday's game, however, I'm a bit disappointed. They should be 4-0 as I type this. Costly penalties. Questionable game plans. Ugh. Why did Charlie Batch only have 6 pass attempts heading into the 4th quarter? Why did the Steelers D give the Ravens the sidelines on the final drive? Why? Why? Why?

Not a great weekend for Pennsylvania sports by any measure.
I have to work tonight, and thus will be missing my first Dolphins Monday Night game, ever. If they win, I promise I'll never watch another one for the rest of my life.
