Cast the next music biopic.

Obviously inspired by the latest news of Sacha Cohen as Freddie Mercury in the Queen biopic and Rain Dog's excellent casting in that thread.

Sure music biopics are tired and mostly follow the same story and are pretty stale at this point, but I still find myself watching them and mostly enjoying them. Especially if I have even the slightest interest in the artist/band.

Despite what most people think about them here (they're one of my favorite bands, personally) I still think the Chili Peppers would make for a decent, if standard, music biopic. Sex, drugs, and [funk-punk]. Though at this point it'd be a little too early for one. Still, I'd cast:

Anthony Kiedis - Mark Wahlberg (Is there anybody else? ... Hell, Wahlberg can probably sing just as well )
Flea - Ethan Hawke
Chad Smith - Jason Patric (please, no Will Ferrell jokes)
John Frusciante - Aaron Johnson (1988-1993), Toby Kebbell (1994-present)
Dave Navarro (just cuz) - Johnny Depp

I've been racking my brain on a cast for KISS. I think Russell Crowe would make a great Gene Simmons. Came up empty on the rest . . . Ben Affleck as Paul Stanley would be kind of great and hilarious.

So, yeah, what band/artist(s) would you like to see depicted in the movies and who would you cast?

EDIT: Tommy Wiseau as Gene Simmons. lol

Johnny Depp as Ozzy Ozborne, actually I think that was rumoured a while ago.

There is supposed to be a Hank Williams biopic in the works, and really there are only two people I can see in the role. One is Hank Williams III, because well, he has his grandfathers looks and voice, but the chances of that happening are slim to none. So, the only really perfect choice is:

Sam Rockwell as Hank Williams.

Sounds familiar. I remember Christopher Walken being rumored for a small role as Ozzy in a Van Halen biopic that was to star Val Kilmer (before he turned into a manatee) as David Lee Roth. Coulda been great.

Also "The King of Country Western: The Unkown Hinson Story" as told by Unkown Hinson hisself recounting his life story and being portrayed by Bill Murray (in silent re-enactments) would be all kinds of awesome.

Sam Rockwell is a great choice.

Crushingly obvious I know, but that doesn't mean it wouldn't be pretty fantastic...

Yeah, that'd be pretty great. But what about the rest of the band?

Jake Gyllenhall as Raffi

Brendan Fraser as Jimmy Buffett

Mick is hard because he's as iconic as Keef. I reckon Ewan McGregor would have a pretty good chance at capturing the essence of the man tho.

It's not like he hasn't come close to that before.
That Sam Rockwell/Hank Williams suggestion is inspired. Christian Bale had long been my choice for Hank.

Also, Lady Gaga (minus makeup) was born to play Laura Nyro.
A younger Eddie Izzard would have been a killer Mick.

And I could see Rockwell taking on Steven Tyler as well.

Also super obvious and rather uninspired - Joe Anderson as Kurt Cobain.

Or Tone Loc. I can't decide.

Nice. Very nice.

Is your chili peppers Bio set in the future?

Elijah Wood was trying to get an Iggy Pop film going for a while.

Tilda Swinton as Bowie cameo in the QUEEN biopic!

I was thinking about who could play Bowie, Darkmite, and that's kinda brilliant.

My god that woman is gorgeous.

Shades of Some Kind of Wonderful and the Go-Go's Turn, Turn, Turn video in my early days....

Streams of Whiskey: The Shane MacGowan Story starring Ewen Bremner (was gonna go with "If I Should Fall From Grace With God" but then I remembered there is already a doco on him with that name)
Jesus, that TILDA SWINTON as DAVID BOWIE suggestion (with picture) is almost scary in its perfection. I don't know how anyone will be able to top that.

Frank Black.

The fan reactions would be hilarious to read regarding the Timberlake casting

Never thought about it. I guess it would start in '92 with the success of BSSM, and flashback, then continue on until Stadium Arcadium? Then John Frusciante leaves again and it ends. Uh-oh! Cliffhanger! Sequel opportunity! 3D potential!

My vote for Iggy Pop would be Downey Jr. But...

I think a young Viggo Mortensen would have made a great John Paul Jones in a Zeppelin movie.

Jason Schwartzman as Keith Moon would be perfect in the Who flick.

EDIT: Some one invent a time machine and make this happen:

Jim Carrey as a young George Jones:

I must admit, I've always wanted to see a Marvin Gaye biopic but only if it focused on the period where he made 'What's Going On' and beyond. I'd love to see Chiwetel Ejiofor play Marvin.

Been saying this for years. Not only is he the spitting image of the younger Moon, Schwartzman's also a drummer (he was in Phantom Planet years ago).

Also, Jared Leto is the only choice for Roger Daltrey (they've got the same eyes & Leto's an actual lead singer).

As for Pete Townshend, Adrien Brody maybe?

Seriously, this Who movie should've been made years ago.

Cate Blanchett could pull it off too. That pic of Tilda is awesome though.

Years ago, Val Kilmer was Jim Morrison. Now?

I did a Who cast for some thread a couple of years ago and had Schwartzman as Moon back then.

The guy has never not surprised me on film, and he's been pretty damned fearless so far with his choices, even when they flop. He's got it in him.

Charlie Hunnam as Kurt Cobain
Anthony Mackie as Marvin Gaye

James Franco as Paul Westerberg in "Left of the Dial".

Bryce Dallas Howard in The Tori Amos Story, but only if they include her heavy metal years.

I cannot express how much I approve of this.

Meanwhile, Tori can star in The Reba McEntire Story.

The story of George Clinton and the whole Parliafunkadelicment thang has enough drugs, sex, outrageous antics, personal drama and revolutionary politics to fill a hunk of a movie, if not a television series. Clinton has become somewhat of a harmless dopey grandpa in his old age, but he was seriously unhinged during the seventies.

No question who should perform the lead role, of course: André 3000 fits the bill on many counts.

Given that Outkast is already the Funkadelic of our age, that really is a no-brainer.

Imagine a stage show like THIS getting recreated!

I just tried to pre-order the Blu ray of this on Amazon, but it didn't work.

Inspired choice, but who would play Bootsie Collins?

Also, wasn't Andre 3 Stacks rumoured to be playing Jimi Hendrix in a biopic? Shame that didn't go anywhere.
Didn't Idlewild flop enough to keep Andre out of films for awhile?

Dexter Fletcher as Mick Jagger:

Ali Larter has the looks to play Debbie Harry, but does she have the guts?

Seriously, we need a Debbie Harry movie.
Aaron Johnson as Syd Barrett
Harry Connick Jr as Frank Sinatra
Giovanni Ribisi as Eminem
Michael Keaton as Lars Ulrich
Todd Louiso as Moby
Sylvester Stallone as Billy Joel
Mercedes Ruehl as Steven Tyler
Slap some collagen in his lips and I reckon Jonathan Rhys Meyers would do a decent Mick Jagger:

Kat Dennings has two massive obstacles in her way to resemble Patti Smith.
