Miike slices a classic samurai film into 3 dimensions.

The 3D part is pretty lame, but I love the pairing otherwise. I think Harikari is my favorite non-Kurusawa samurai flick, and think it has great remake potential, especially through Miike's newer and colorful eye.

At the very least I hope this brings a little attention to Kobayashi's original film. Probably one of the best, if not the best, Samurai films made.

Also, as a provisio I'd keep your expectations in check. Miike tends to excel when constrained or working with boundaries, his big, high concept, films tend to be kind of dull (I'm looking at you Izo and you too, Zebraman)

Damn straight. You shut your whore mouth about Izo, though, if ya don't want trouble.

Everyone on this board owes it to themselves to check out the original. It's not some wacky, Japanese exploitation gross-out movie, which Miike's may (or may not) be. It's right up there with any other Samurai film you could name.

I kind of want to photograph and catalogue you, I've never heard anyone have a good word to say about Izo.

Oh and if anyone does watch the original Harikari try and catch SWORD OF DOOM and SAMURAI REBELLION as well. They make a neat kind of thematic trilogy.

Yes! SWORD OF DOOM! Your opinion of non-Izo Japanese films is impeccable, I do say.

Miike carries around a lot of baggage. He's boxed in the same way Park was when it came to I'M A CYBORG (a damn good film). If he manages to drop a lot of that baggage, people will look at some of his work differently (not all of it, though. He's certainly had his share of clunkers).

Although I think Miike was a lot more purposeful in boxing himself in than Chan-wook. Certainly it feels that later work is informed by the perception of the Miike brand. It does get frustrating when genuinely interesting work like Audition, Bird People in China, Katakuris, and Dead or Alive: Birds and even Agitator are universally classed as schlock.

Like I said earlier I think Miike works better when severly limited. Visitor Q, which a lot of people view as the height of Miike's gross out sensibility, was essentially an experiment to see how low budget Miike could go and what he could achieve with new, commerical, digi-cameras.

I agree with Spike. The less that Miike has at his disposal, the more interesting he gets, which is probably why Visitor Q is one of my favorite of his films. (My very favorite: Bird People in China.)

It's been a while since I've really been excited about a Miike project, and while the 3D doesn't do anything for me I'm thrilled at the idea of Miike working with samurai once more. I dug the fuck out of Izo, a movie that I feel got a lot of shit for pretty much no real reason that I can ascertain.

Also much love to Sword of Doom. Classic.
