Movies you remember learning about at the video store back in the day

The Stuff. From the big The Stuff cardboard cut-out.

Bloodsucking Freaks. Which introduced me to Troma.

I was thinking about this today, remembering being a kid walking through the video (VHS) store, being surprised, finding new stuff, and wondering what that medium is for kids today. Does Netflix Instant give that same sensation when someone stumbles upon Heavy Metal on their dad's xbox netflix account?

Both The Wizards and Starchaser the Legend of Orin showed me there was such a thing as an Adult cartoon.

Plus both are awesome.

The movies I learned about from going to the video store are beyond count. Cinema culture was pretty damn dead in Greece when I was growing up so I went in blind for almost everything. But for brevity's sake I'll give the first two I ever got. First day that my father brought home a VCR I immediately volunteered to be the movie guy. I ran to the video store and rented two films. The first one was Terminator. My thought process went like this. "Holy shit the gun also has a laser! RENT!" The other one was Revenge Of The Ninja. "Holy shit the ninja is throwing ninja stars AND fire! RENT!"

I remember being deeply effected as a young'un by the video covers for Class Of Nuke'em High and Surf Nazis Must Die (featuring Leroys Mama!) - my first introduction to Troma. The pictures on the back of the video cover of The Thing haunted my bedtimes - now my favourite horror film.

Even tho it was the first video I ever watched on our new VCR, I always loved looking at the video cover for Flash Gordon. The '76 King Kong cover had a similar impact.

There are so many, but the first and strongest to jump out in my mind is Ken Russell's The Devils. It was kept in the horror section of a mom and pop store where my family did all their video renting. It caught my eye with its big green Warners Bros. box and the odd caption photo on the cover of a nun whispering suspisciously into the ear of a skinny priest with a chili bowl haircut. I was expecting somekind of Excorsist meets nunsplotation drive-in '70s stuff. Far form it. This movie is smart and artistic and quite original. With an amazing performance from Oliver Reed, maybe the best acting he ever did.

The cover to Jackson's Dead Alive, with the skull in the woman's mouth, freaked me for years when walking through the aisles of Blockbuster. I felt rebellious just walking through the horror section. Pretty much every cover freaked me out.

There are films that I'm still interested in seeing, based solely on the cover art. Bakshi's Fire and Ice comes to mind.

Anything from Thorn EMI was bound to be kick-ass to a 14 year old - Martin, Dawn of the Dead, The Burning. And this gem of a tagline:

Other labels offered naughty pleasures as well:

I remember how I couldn't go into the horror section of a video store for years due to the Child's Play series' covers. Ironic considering I love the genre now (though I've never seen any of Chucky's exploits still due to the stigma).

I also vividly remember a Silence of the Lambs sticker with the moth on it at my old mom and pop store.

Unfortunately, there was never really anything I really learned about at the video store due to my young self always wanting to rent the Problem Child movies. Also The Naked Gun...I can still remember the Black Rain trailer at the beginning of the tape.

Can that one live up to its tagline and cover? Looks sweet.

Here's a gallery of Thorn EMI and HBO VHS releases. Same site has a ton of other companies too: Media, Vestron, the works.
