COMMUNITY (Season 2): Streets Aheadier - Page 3

I actually was laughing about how quickly they got over Brita not being there.
Great episode back. I agree, I was worried about Betty White, but she was fine (I could have done without the post-credit Africa bit, though). The hate-love kisses were priceless.
They managed to make a wordless reference to both The Toy and Glover's Spider-Man campaign in the first 30 seconds. This is the best show on television.

Woke up this morning to a double smile on my face: The Amazon coupon went through and the season premiere hit all the right notes.

I love that they ended that relationship triangle quickly and did so in such an amazing way. Abed's epiphany when Shirley told him relationships could be considered an adventure was so great while setting up the episode's arc. And as mentioned, the build up of Jeff and Britta's fake relationship to the confrontation in the study room was pretty amazing. The cast's timing is so perfect. I just love their back and forth banter. And if/when Chang gets added to the mix... oh man, it'll be bliss. One thing I didn't really care for was the addition of Sideburn's top hat. Hopefully that joke will play itself out. And yeah, they used Betty well.

So happy Community is back!

For as focused as I can be on minor details, I often miss big picture stuff. Thus, this went completely over my head. Ha ha ha...

The Jeff-Britta escalations were absolutely amazing. Their angry pecking kisses in the Study Room floored me. "I dowloaded a song that makes me think of you. Let's listen to it, each using one ear bud."

Loved the return of Britta's turning it into a snake, as well as the fact that her burgeoning cult started doing it.

Well played, Betty White. I've managed to miss every single one of her return exploits. but she was great here:
"I... respect... you."
"That's why you fail!"

And, lastly (for the moment), I'll leave you all with this:
"Is there any room in this pocket for a little spare Chang?"

ETA: Oh, my GOD! Glover's pjs were also a The Toy reference. So many layers!

At times I'm so very frustrated that this doesn't hit me the way it hits you guys. But I watch it more appreciative of what they're doing than actually laughing out loud at it. Can't quite put my finger on what doesn't connect with me, except that it often feels more like a collection of awesome little moments than a cohesive whole.
I'm not going to post this for every thread, but Community/Office/30 Rock all did simillar numbers to last season, so no massive problems there. BBT was huge apparently, but Community survived.

Excellent to hear!

Damn everyone has already covered all of the great moments so I will just say great start for the season.

I feel that way about Modern Family. I get why people find it funny, but it doesn't connect with me the way it does with everyone else.
The thing about Community is that it's as if someone designed a show just for me.

"Is there anything you didn't win that day?"

Here's the all important (snore) numbers

NBC's rival "Community" (5 million, 2.2) fell 42% from last year's debut -- but last year the comedy benefited from an "Office" lead-in and aired at 9:30 p.m. "Community" managed to post a number that was steady with the show's usual 8 p.m. performance, and also improved upon last year's "Saturday Night Live" special in the time period.

I wonder if at some point NBC gives up on Outsourced and swaps it with Community.

No worries. Comedy is subjective, after all. You either have the hardware to plug in or ya don't.
But it seems like I should grok to it, and I'm just not.

More likely NBC will shove another one of their new comedies in there for the juicy Office lead-in. They have another 3 waiting in the wings.

Unfortunately that means Parks is gonna still be stuck in mid-season, whatever the result of Outsources.

You can never tell. My best friend was, like, this huge Monty Python/John Cleese fan. Loved all the Python movies - got me STARTED watching them, in fact. We went to see A Fish Called Wanda with a group of friends. This film is ENTIRELY in my best friend's wheelhouse and we're all rolling - except for him. We walk out, I asked him what he thought. He was like, "I guess I can see how it was funny. I don't know. I didn't get it."

Comedy is not just a subjective thing, but it's a subjective SPECIFIC thing. If it's missing some level of emotional identification, then it can be like on the outside looking in real fast.

I also loved the portrait of Fletch? Griswold? -era Chevy hung over Pierce's bed. Anybody know what that picture was from exactly?

Also, good to hear it wasn't slaughtered in the ratings (mostly). Come on, NBC! Cancel Outsourced and give Community the lead-in it needs. (ETA: ugh. Thanks for crushing my hopes, nooj. Those all sound lousy. Every time I think NBC is growing a brain...)
The Africa bit at the end was my favoritist thing ever.

Really fun, super solid opening. I bought extra copies of the series cause it was so cheap to give out as gifts. It didn't save Arrested Development when I did that, but maybe this time!

Don't feel bad, Dickson. It doesn't really connect with me, either. I OnDemanded a few of the later episodes over the summer and found them improved over some of the early-season stuff but still not laugh-out-loud hilarious.

And when I swung by this thread earlier to see how episode one of season two went over with the masses, everyone was talking about Donald Glover/Spider-Man winks and jokes about SHIT MY DAD SAYS ... which just doesn't interest me at all. Excessive meta-ness does not equal funny.

Still, even if it's not my cup of tea, I'm happy for Joel McHale and what COMMUNITY can do for his career. Have always liked that guy.

Ultimately, I just miss PARKS & REC. What is this OUTSOURCED shit that's fucking up NBC's Thursday night?
Doesn't NBC have other nights it can dump all these shit new comedies onto? I miss Ron Fucking Swanson.

And an Olivia Munn vehicle waiting in the wings, as well.

Absolutely agreed. Modern Family is more pleasantly charming than laugh-out-loud funny. Community had my roommate and I rolling last night.

I'd like to slowly unravel Chang and his genuine origins and reveal to the world what's really going on there.”
Wow. This should be good.

Just because Murder's avatar is of an Asian man doesn't mean it's me!!! Hahahaahah!

Dickson, you're not speaking my Changuage! (yeah, I too hate it when something so tailored for you doesn't end up 'fitting')
Oh snap! So sorry Nooj ... I totally misread the post above me & just assumed it was you. Darn it you guys all look alike...

My apologies Nooj & Murder.

While I'm posting...the opening shot of nearly naked Jeff doing his morning workout was lovely eye-candy.
Goddammit. Just found out that The Big Bang Theory nearly tripled Community's audience last night.

Even motherfucking Outsourced did better than Community (though I expect that Outsourced's numbers will plummet next week).
MotherFUCKER.

I knew Big Blank Theory would do great numbers but fucking White Man Goes to India Quasi-Racist Laugh-O-Rama too?

Jesus.
You've got a show in its fourth season with all the buzz and goodwill its built up over that time versus a show in only its second season. This is hardly surprising.
We do live in a bit of an CHUD/internet bubble, don't we? I feel like I don't know ANYONE who watches Big Bang Theory or cares a lick about it. It doesn't come up in any way in my life other than the fact that it should be hated. I mean... I just found out that Desperate Housewives is still on. And I haven't heard that show mentioned in any capacity in ages.
Big Bang Theory's, uh, big numbers pretty much guarantee that geeks aren't watching it.
Why? Geeks don't watch popular things too?

Never. They revoke your membership if you do.

I have had two people tell me I should watch BBT. I just have no desire to. I like Community, fuck what everybody else is watching at the time.
Outsourced had Office as its lead-in, plus it was the premiere episode. I'm not surprised by its ratings--I will be if they stay that high after a month or so though...

Does anyone think Community got a Betty White "bump"? Yes, Big Bang Theory did well against it but it's just the premiere. Community's ratings were consistent with what they were through most of 1st season, so at least the loyal fanbase is still tuning in. Let's not lose hope just yet; give the newbies time to catch up on the DVDs, and who knows??
Betty White was great on Community. Can she go away for awhile now? Please?
I don't understand you Abed. Is this you being meta?

So glad this is back.

I love Community, I like BBT (girlfriend loves it), so I watch Community and DVR BBT. I love how it's a competition though.

MADNESS. You can't like BBT and Community! CHOOSE.
No, Cameron. We must set BBT and Community on opposite sides of the room and see which one comes to him first. Then, like true love, it has chosen him.

Just rewatched it and noticed this little gem

"Maybe it's the telescope. You can look into it backwards...SHRINK YOUR ENEMIES!!"

My guess would be from Chevy's personal collection.

Such a great opening episode. Combined with the greatness of 30 Rock this is a helluva 1-2 punch.
