Just got high standards. I use it as a term of consistent quality tone. While that tone is more drama, it is a consistent quality tone.

Should I switch to Arrested Development?

FYI, I'm looking forward to the show as well. Just because a show has flaws, doesn't mean they can't fix them. I mean I stuck with Smallville till the very end (yeah an exception to the high standard thing, I'm a sucker for all things Superman and cars, bias).

Probably, since I don't know what "consistent quality tone" means.

Complaining that Community doesn't have enough Mad Men-style character development is like saying Mad Men sucks because it doesn't have enough car chases.

Well I'm biased towards cars, so my argument with that would be flawed.

When I compare to Mad Men, I'm comparing to its ability to consistently bring a quality product, that's all. It has a flow of narrative. Season 1 of Community had that. Season 2 was the kitchen sink every week almost.

I don't get the "flow of narrative" thing.  There wasn't exactly a ton of significant continuity in season 1, aside from some winks and nods to earlier jokes a la Arrested Development.  And I'd argue that the shows longest running and most important character arc has been Pierce gradually turning evil and that happened in season 2.

All I'm going to say is that I'm more inclined to rewatch season 1 than season 2.  But that might have a lot to do with me rewatching Parks & Recreation more.

Nice thing about Community not having a consistent plot tone or whatever is that I don't intend to rewatch the entire season straight through, usually. As with Arrested Development, I expect to pick and choose my favorites dependent on mood. In that sense, lower lows doesn't matter, but higher highs does. At least to me

Who's excited for competitive Community Versus Park and Rec this year? Only one show can triumph and be better!

My brain only allows me to choose ONE show.

ONE show!

Two of them is too much goodness.

I won't choose and you can't make me.

...but if I have to choose, I'll run away and elope with It's Always Sunny.

and I agree with that, so with that season 2 ending, are we supposed to feel sorry for him? I didn't.

I'm currently engaged to Mad Men, but maybe I'll leave it for something older, like Police Squad. It helped me with an emotional reservoir.

Ditto. Goddamn this is a great time for TV.

After watching the  DVDs, here is my overly detailed episode-by- episode breakdown of Season 2. After breaking it down like this, I can see why some people prefer Season 1 to 2. There is an awful lot of "filler" down there. Season 1 may have fewer Must See episodes, but also a lot fewer Filler episodes.

Bus S2 had ten (for me) mind-blowing episodes. That's quite a feat.

Must See Television (10) - Episodes that I annoy my non-Community-watching friends with
Epidemiology
Cooperative Calligraphy
Conspiracy Theories and Interior Design
Abed's Uncontrollable Christmas
Advanced Dungeons and Dragons
Intermediate Documentary Filmmaking
Critical Film Studies
Paradigms of Human Memory
Fistful of Paintballs
For a Few Paintballs More

Quality Television (4) - Strong though not transcendent episodes
Basic Rocket Science
Messianic Myths and Ancient Peopls
Aerodynamics of Gender
Mixology Certification

Adequate Filler (8) - Not firing on all cylinders, maybe one plot line falls flat or a single sequence elevates it
Anthropology 101
Accounting for Lawyers
Asian Population Studies
Custody Law and Eastern European Diplomacy
Celebrity Pharmacology
Early 21st Century Romanticism
Intro to Political Science
Applied Anthropology and Culinary Arts

Misses, Near and Far (2) - Episodes I will likely skip in the future
The Psychology of Letting Go
Competitive Wine Tasting

That is about what my season one breakdown would look like though. Though I'd have to rewatch them all to be sure. Personally, I just think Season Two is where I fell in love with the show for real, after the Paintball one suggested it was possible. I remember some things about Season 1 weren't fully formed yet - Britta wasn't at all funny for a long time, an awful lot of sitcomy premises they hadn't quite managed to deconstruct - and I do feel the theme episodes are a pretty big part of what makes this show special, so that's why Two is the watershed season for me.

"Aerodynamics of Gender" (a.k.a., the "trampoline episode") only making the "Strong-Though-Not-Transcendent" cut?

Pistols at dawn, sir.

"It's going to be a maze."

Gradually making my way through the season 2 commentaries.  I love that Harmon confirmed Gwynnifer in "Cooperative Calligraphy" is in fact a code name for Britta.  Not sure if I ever posted anything to this effect, but that was the first time I had an inkling something was going on behind the scenes with her and Jeff.

That's almost my favourite line from the whole season.

I could easily understand movement in either direction for any of these according to personal preference.

I've been watching through a bunch of this season now that the DVDs got here, and the one episode I would have to vigorously defend from that categorization is "Early 21st Century Romanticism". As far as I'm concerned, everything in that episode works. Jeff and Duncan having their soccer watching interrupted by Chang (plus, the introduction of Magnitude. Pop Pop!). Abed and Troy asking out the librarian. Britta and her "lesbian" friend. Aside from the very minor "Pierce talking to imaginary Andy Dick" plot, everything works. It also includes the fantastic Barenaked Ladies discussion around the study table.

I didn't like the stuff in Jeff's apartment. Loved the Britta storyline. Liked the Troy/Abeb thing and the librarian was adorable.

That BNL sequence was brilliant.

ETA: In general, the presence of more than two story lines almost always cripples things for me. The only exception I can think of is the "pass the sandwich" episode from Season 1.

I love the Britta / lesbian mini-arc.  Its easily my favorite Britta subplot of the second season.  Hilarious and so true to the character.

The Who's the Boss class is easily the number three story, and it's the best part of that episode. In fact, it's funny enough to be the A or B story,...oh, that means you're right. Well done then.

And I think that means that you and I are the only cool kids 'round here because we were the only ones who thought the Who's the Boss storyline was aces.

Not the only ones. I love me a bit of Tobolowsky...

My favorite detail from the Who's The Boss? storyline: the caterer's apron in the picture on the wall.  "I Act Too!"  Kills me every time.

Can I be one of the cool kids, too? I didn't care for Competitive Wine Tasting but I loved that C-Story and Tobolowsky was far too underused. The revolver in the drawer followed by the What WAS Happening? sight-gag was my biggest laugh of the the episode.

The continuing saga of Dan Harmon being motherfucking awesome.

What a man.

Read that before, but it's still awesome. Never talk down to anyone.
