Chuck - Season 4

Starts tonight.
I gotta say, i'm very close to dropping the show if they don't get going on a mythology heavy story line. I'm tired of one off shows that don't progress.
I'll be watching! Tonight's at least.
Well, it'll be interesting to see how the show changes given the finale last season.

Linda Hamilton will play Chuck's mother so it will track with mythology a little. I was looking for that piece of news and was kinda terrified but the amount of guest stars in this season.

I don't know who you guys are kidding. There will be a TRON joke, Yvonne will show up wearing only her underwear, and you'll all be back next week.
With the glut of spy shows, Chuck has a tall order to make something interesting out if the genre.
Chuck is...Great. It is heads and tales over all other spy series on tv today! Yvonne Strahovski alone, makes that so. The combination of...action and humor, and a romance of a geek and the hottest Spy Babe, since, Emma...PEELed off her clothes in the...swinging 60's. Nikita would of course be...2nd, but it is nowhere near as cool as...Chuck!
Glad someone decided to start a thread. I would have completely forgotten about the show returning.

JPL, You are not the only one. The NY Post and News, only remembered the...4 new series in their tv section...Hawaii 5-0, Mike and Molly, The Event, and The Chase.
Holy crap, that snuck up on me too. New Chuck!
Ha! Repo Man.

Nice.
Another, Great episode of...Chuck! To me...Chuck and NFL Football, are the...Only reasons to watch, NBC!
Shirtless Chuck. YUM. Sexting gag was kind of funny. Confused a bit on Chuck's mom. Good or evil? Otherwise, this was a set-up episode.
HBarr, I would say that, Chuck's mom is...Good. She might have agreed not to try to escape to keep her family safe, and decided to leave, once she found that, Chuck was seeking her out.
Wooo, good opening. Go Sarah Connor! I mean Ms. Bartowski!

No real Dolph battle or fight was kinda lame. Every good piece of action happened off screen. Except for the last bit.
Dunno, will probably catch it from time to time, but i won't really be looking forward to this.
How quickly do they go back to Chuck lying about stupid crap. If they could find some way to create conflict that doesn't involve them lying to people that would really be appreciated. I honestly thought they really couldn't go back to that well again. I'm hopeful that it won't really last too long though.

I also appreciate the ambiguity with his mom. Is she good or bad? Clearly she's crossed some line (the killing Dolph Lundgren line). It will be interesting to see how they bring back Jeff and Lester this season. And how the Buy More cover works this time.
It was pretty good, at least I didn't see too much dumb stuff, plot or character-wise. Though, it sucks that Dolph was killed off. Or was he?

I don't know, but he was definitely under-utilized. I don't think they're going to go back to lying about stupid crap, but he's a spy so I'd imagine there'd be secret-keeping and all that.

If you saw the promo: it seems like he's being honest about stuff.
But it wasn't a 'next week' promo, it was a 'this season' promo so it could happen in any episode down the line. So if they stretch it out to 6-8 episodes of secret spying it'll still be annoying.

I'm just sick of ever week saying, "No more lies, I'm going to trust you!" "But I have to lie and I'm not sure I can trust them." I understand they need to keep secrets from some people but Chuck going back to keeping secrets from his friends and family is just frustrating backpedaling to me at this point.

God I hope he's dead. One time sitting through this show is enough for me.
I like people bitching about this show and watching fucking Fringe. at least Chuck is entertaining. Fringe is 50% of the time, mainly because of mythology or Walter.

So, not too bad I guess. We had Dolph's 2 most famous lines, and like Hbarr said, a good setup. The Buy More stuff was at least good, with it being a CIA base full of spies. Olivia Munn, while cute, can't act for shit and her voice sounds like Mr. T with a cold.

Moltisanti wanted this only for Dolph? Fucking hell man, do you watch his Swedish TV promos too?

And I want Jeffster back ASAP.
For a season opener, it wasn't bad. In fact there was a lot of good. The sexting was humorous. Chuck is a badass now. Sara foot angle camera shot was glorious.

Linda Hamilton's screen time was great.

The problems were Dolph was under utilized and Olivia Munn was completely wooden.
Done with the show. It was fun when Chuck was an accidental spy but all this soap-opera bullshit killed it for me. Can't wait 'til Chuck's evil twin brother shows up.
Olivia Munn was...perfectly cast as a...Beautiful Agent for the local...Spy More! I definitely want to see her eventally be, Morgan's new gal pal!
That's it for me. For three seasons I've tricked myself into believing this show was going to one day rise above complete and average mediocrity, but it's just never, ever going to happen. When my enjoyment of your show is inversely proportional to how much screen time the leads get, that's a problem. And since they seemed determined to use as little of the best part of the show as they can (Awesome, Jeffster) I'm out.

Chuck will go down as the Dave Matthews Band of TV; something people with pedestrian taste like because they think it's edgy.
Louris, I do not watch...Chuck, because it is, edgy, I watch because, Chuck is a fantastic, romantic comedy/spy series. Zachary Levi, Yvonne Strahovski, and Adam Baldwin, and their entire cast of supporting actors are always a joy to watch. I love how, Chuck and Sarah kissing, sickens Colonel Casey. The action is always great, with plenty of car chases and shoot outs.To me...Chuck is the best, most humorous, series on TV. The day NBC cancels, Chuck, is the day I will...NBC you later, to this great series weaker replacement. The only...Event, worth watching on NBC last night was the return of...Chuck Bartowski geek superspy!

Edgy? The show's light airy fun and I don't think most people that watch it think it's anything but.
Nobody who watches CHUCK thinks its edgy. What a completely off-base remark.

I was pretty underwhelmed by the season premiere. It perked up a little at the end with Linda Hamilton kicking some ass.

And I'm with Nachos -- these characters just need to stop lying to each other, period. It's so tired by now.

Everyone here knows what's Chuck all about. It's not The Wire. It's not Supernatural. It's not Boardwalk Empire.

Please post less.

Martin S, I prefer...Chuck, to the 3 series you mentioned...easilly!

My sister is a prime example. She's got bland, boring pedestrian taste in almost everything, and she gets super excited about Chuck because she gets the unsubtle geek references in the show. She pretty much watches exclusively bad reality TV, but she posts about Chuck on Facebook because she thinks it makes her cool. Everyone I see or hear that talks about Chuck like it's some outstanding piece of entertainment and not just light occasionally fun fluff seems to be someone like that, someone with bland, pedestrian taste that thinks Chuck is something really cool that they "get".

I see the same thing re: Dave Matthews Band. I work with some music geeks and guys that play in bands that talk about music a lot. Almost invariable when someone who isn't very musically knowledgeable tries to participate in some conversation, they bring up Dave Matthews Band like it's an edgy card to be played to show they're "cool".

The comment wasn't directed at you, nor anyone here. If it makes you feel better, I think you're pretty badass for being all e-tuff about it and telling me to post less, though.

CHUCK is both of these things. I don't understand why you think they're mutually exclusive.

Also, think what you will about the Dave Matthews Band's music -- they have a gazillion fans who follow their every move. They're as mainstream as it gets. CHUCK, meanwhile, routinely gets killed in its time slot and has been renewed three times by the skin of its teeth thanks to a small but loyal cult audience. So I'm not really buying your comparison.

Lastly, considering how you described your sister, I'm a little shocked she's watching CHUCK instead of DANCING WITH THE STARS. Maybe she has better taste than you give her credit for.

That comment seems to be directed at everyone here who thinks Chuck is a great piece of entertainment.

Pretty much. But hey, Louris has better tastes than anyone here...

It's a dumb fun show. Like Commando. Like Bad Boys 2. Like Transformer 1. Get it? No one claims it's the best thing ever. What you wrote is at best retarded.

There's nothing to "get". Everyone here knows the flaws of the show, but it's still a fun ride. "Get it?".
Pretty underwhelmed with this. I like Chuck as fluffy, disposable entertainment for a Monday night, but do we have to keep getting the same thing over and over? Blowing up the Buy More seemed like a step in the right direction last season. Gives Chuck more time to focus on spy-stuff and characters like Jeffster! and Big Mike room to roam around in "wacky" b-plots here and there.

But oh look, the General rebuilt it. How long before those three guys end up working at the new Spy More and we're exactly where we were before? Like with Chuck and his renewed lying/secret spying? I suppose it makes sense to keep with what works for the fans considering the show's almost constant danger of being cancelled. But it's gonna happen sooner or later, might as well do something interesting with it.

In all fairness, Chuck's mom is at least an interesting character...for now. The ambiguity around her is something I can get behind. Plus, I'll never hate seeing Harry Dean Stanton in something, if only for an episode.

Ultimately it's hard to complain with a show like this, and I'm not asking for greatness, but mixing it up a little would be nice. That and better green screen work. Shit looked pretty bad in spots last night. Was I wrong or was Chuck actually sitting in front of a fake office background for one of his interviews? Did they not have an empty room and a chair he could sit in somewhere? I get that they're not working with much of a budget, but still...not good.

I honestly wish you'd spend a weekly column recap on a better show.

Entirely subjective but Chuck is a great show (for what it is).....so keep up the great work David!

Screw Dolph, this was the tragically wasted cameo of the episode.

I had no idea I watched Chuck to be edgy and cool and to hang out with the cool kids in the cafeteria. All this time I thought it was because I liked the actors, the charm of the show, the action scenes and the often cleverly staged and written humor.

I must go ram a blade through my belly in shame now.
You should do that. Watching shows without knowing why. You bring shame to your father.

Watching Chuck because it's edgy. Now that's an insightful idea. Me, I just watch it for the social commentary and the period detail.

"Hey dad, gotta off myself because somebody on the internet brought it to my attention that I watch a TV show to be edgy and cool. The last 3 years have been built on LIES."

How come watch Chuck cuz it's a fun show about a nerd who becomes a spy? We don't need to analyze every little details; it is what it is.

Pretty sure Mr. Stelios was using the fine art of sarcasm. Not about me killing myself, I should totally do that, but what he watches Chuck for.
No I wasn't. If you think about it, this episode's focus on Sarah's short skirt and ridiculously shapely legs is a comment about how the established power structure literally uses the proletariat as a means of transportation to its ultimate goal. Which as was also revealed later in the episode is to kill the communists. But the series' creators bravely inserted the shots of Sarah stepping on her iphone as a rallying call. "Workers of the world, crash the capitalists under your feet. Only then will you be free."

Plus the voyeuristic angles Sarah was shot from are a continuation of the series' condoning of violent rape as a viable courtship ritual.

As for the period details, it would be disingenuous to claim that the production hasn't had the trappings of life in 2010 down. From the way people talk, to their clothes, to the technology they use. It's not an easy feat.
Oh my goodness stelios, you are my hero. For Chuck anyway.
