The Event - Page 4

It struck me about a week ago that the way the show mainly focuses on plot and not much (or at all) on character development reminds me of Heroes. People loved Heroes initially because there was so much shit going on and it was all "cool" but all the characters were one-dimensional. I get that same vibe here. I don't understand why it's so hard for the writers to understand that moving the mystery/mythology/etc. along is all well and good but if the characters themselves are uninteresting, people are going to quit watching. It's such a simple concept that it amazes me that there's such shit on right now.

This. That's the level of shitty writing that has finally crossed the line for me and gotten this show booted off the record list. I can be tolerant of crap, but that's just too much.

Hal Holbrook is one bad motherfucker. Ritter's boy shot was wonderfully done but his girl is so stupid that hurts.
Hahaha ... this show. So hilariously bad. I can't stop watching.
You know a show isn't any good when after 5-6 episodes, everything about it (Plot, Moltivation) is still hazy. And you don't give a shit about any of the characters. Those stupid flashbacks don't contribute much as well.

And now they're going to hiatus till Feb?
So, just to confirm, Hal Holbrook is an alien or something?
My assumption was: regular guy trying to use alien tech to make himself young again.

Also, I'm still assuming they're not actually aliens, but rather time travelers. But I could be giving the writers too much credit in not making aliens that look exactly like us.

Is it bad that I fell asleep during the hero's life-threatening surgery? Or that I was disappointed when I woke up and found he had survived?
Yeah, they're probably future humans, but until the series decide to actually clue us in on what's going on, I'm just calling them aliens.
So, the "backup plan", in case the assassins failed, was a truck full of explosives in the hopes of catching the VP walking across the street?

Watching this show is like picking a scab: it hurts like hell but I just can't stop.
I kind of loved the scene where the blown up guy staggers off the roof in the background and shoots Ritter while he's talking with his girlfriend.

Gotta love how the doctor patched him up... great job on that exit wound but the entrance wound in his back is still there guys!
Yeah, that cracked me up. Look at all this blood coming out of his back ... don't worry, we patched up the front. Nothing to get infected on the dirty ground here. Of course, I'm sure the next thing we'll find out is that Ritter heals unusually quickly ... maybe because he's secretly an 'alien' too.
Oh yeah, that scene with the old little girls from last week creeped me the fuck out.
I'm halfway the last episode...
Young Ethan Hawke is comfortably resting in the back of the van.
Bye bye The Event.
"Indigenous people?" Okay, they're from the future. But, they're also aliens.

This show needs to start explaining some shit.
Yeah, the fact that they're going out of their way to make the "explanations" vague as shit is just frustrating. I'm almost convinced they don't even know what the answers are. Best thing about this show so far, Blair Underwood (though doesn't the President have anything else to do but worry about the "aliens"? He and the VP have all but ignored the rest of government.). The "aliens" just aren't compelling in the least, though Sophia was kind of badass toward the end of the last episode.
I'm unclear on what the end was supposed to be. One bullet in the gun implies that either Isabelle tries to kill Sophia, which may or may not be a kill shot, or shoots herself in the head.

Instead Isabelle gets shot/shoots herself in the kneecap? What?
The only (and obvious) explanation is that their hearts (or brains) are in their kneecaps. Just like the aliens in Alien Nation's who-has were in their armpits.

I don't remember them saying anything about shooting herself in the head. I think the point is she can either choose to be excommunicated from the group, or prove her loyalty by shooting herself in the knee (which I've heard is one of the most painful places to be shot).

When Sophia placed the gun in Isabelle's hand she guided the barrel to her kneecap. It was pretty subtle.

Man, I thought they were going with the thing where she either tries to kill Sophia, and take over leadership of the group, or essentially commit seppuku. Though not stated outright.

Not kneecapping herself. Weird.

It is weird, but if it was a choice between killing Sophia, or killing herself, that wouldn't be much of a choice. She would try to kill Sophia. At least by shooting herself she can save face and still remain in the group. Her punishment is self harm.
I was thinking it was a matter of honor of some sort. If Isabelle was that adamant about her opinion, she'd better go all the way. Or remove herself, while retaining some amount of honor.

Whatever. It's The Event.

This should be the series tag line.

I think the show is okay, but I feel the biggest, weakest link is John Ritter's son and his girlfriend. The show drags when these two wishy washy characters show up. I find the other elements a bit more intriguing, although with this show that's not saying much. I find the show is still just interesting enough that I want to find out what happens.
i guess i can see some of the complaints, but im enjoying it, and dont find the msytery reveals to be nearly as frsutrating ... by episode two theyd practically answered your questions from episode one, and turned it on its head ... and every episode has had something new to offer.... and last mondays episode had even more hints and clues--plus the week before had a great ending, as did the one before that...

Personally, i think its doling out answers and hints at a very good pace.
I don't think I've ever been this bored by a show before. They're trying extremely hard to talk in code and keep the whole thing a mystery, which is fine when when the mystery is the least bit alluring, but it's so uninteresting that I'm finding it hard to care.

Was looking forward to this show before it started, but I'm done with it.
Alright so I have the whole season from the pilot ep to the last ep stored on my DVR. I decided to not even start watching until I knew if this was any good. After reading through this thread it seems I can finally make room on my DVR, thanks guys.
This show doesn't really have a plot, or characters. It's just an, "and then!" show.

A guy's going to crash a plane into the president! And then the plane vanishes! And then they find it thousands of miles away! And then everyone dies! And then they're not dead! And then they're dying again! And then aliens! And then old guy young, young girls old!

The show requires a superhuge Event every episode to distract from the fact that the characters are all boring and the actual plot has never developed beyond a sketch.

I'll watch the 'fall finale' for the heck of it, but I knew I was done with the show when the Alien Mama's Boy started bawling. Apparently that storyline ending up interesting wasn't The Event.

Exactly. I was wondering, how do you sum up the idea of the show to someone in one line? You know, something along the lines of "A group of people land on a mysterious island..." and the best way you can do that is probably "Ummm... Lots of stuff happens."
"He's going to tell them about The Event..."

Originally I was worried that they were going to mention "The Event" in every episode to remind you what you're watching. Now I'm worried that they're not mentioning it enough. I can't remember a single reference to "The Event" since the Pilot.

I figured that the aliens had come to warn us about "The Event" but that doesn't seem to be the case as they've had sixty-six years to do so, but haven't said anything. Then I figured that they were going to try and leave before "The Event" but some of the aliens seem to want to stay.. so I guess that's not it either.

Nobody is talking about "The Event". Is there even still going to be an "Event"? Should I even care?
I thought "The Event" was the plane disappearing through that wormhole in the first ep.?
Why would the President be telling the public about an event he didn't know was happening?

The writers have said there will be a big event in every season finale, which I think includes the fall finale next week.

Nope. That incident was contained, as I don't think the media witnessed it.

I think they should show us the "Event' this season, although if what Dr. Murder says is true, there is no one singular event. But I'd like to see something really major happen, and have the rest of the series be the aftermath of said event. Aliens make themselves public, war, whatever. And please reunite that girl with her sister just so we can end that nonsense.
"They're sending a message home."

Aliens. From the future. Calling it now.

I think that it's trying to be 24 in structure in a number of ways, but without as strong a narrative thrust that 24 had to get through the middle episodes. Though even 24 had issues with that.
Just caught this week On Demand.

It's amazing how they keep spinning this garbage around and around.

The files not burnt all the way and burning them in the building....lol.

We dont have the capability of flying a plane to anywhere in the world in an hour.......... lol.

Yeah, that was pretty stupid. Whoever was on Disposal Of Evidence that night needs to get fired because they did one hell of a lousy job.

Back to The Event and suprising and disappointing us at the same time.  The show has something, but lacks in common sense.

Let's see, last night, we go to Tibet where they have built a large "port" of some sort with lots of silver and shiny things.  Yeah i guess the goverment has no way of seeing this from space and questioning what it is doing in Tibet.

The fact that a metal garage door was keeping them inside the prison. Yeah cause all their weapons and such dont have any use!

Here, i'm going to untie you, go run and get out of here   .... oh yeah, forgot about the bullets possibly hittin you, shucks!

Hardball scene was horrendous.

I'm glad they moved the plot along, answered some question but I think this show shares the V writers.  How can a show that has a good premise get fucked up so badly.  Atleast Lost only fucked up the landin.  The Event, V, Heroes fucked up from the get go.

So has everyone officially given up on this show? I've been watching since it came back and though its nothing great, its far from unwatchable. The Jason Ritter storyline, however, has completely bored me other than the fact that he's working with that Hot brunette is nothing but eye-candy.  The Hal Holbrook 'creepy old man with somekind of plan' is only minimially interesting. The good stuff is with Sophia and the President. And now that Thomas is out of the picture i.e. DEAD, kinda glad that the plot will center around Sophia instead of him.

The problem with that show is the alien's endgame. If there planet is indeed going to consumed by its nearby star and they have to take over Earth to continue as a species, that would require our extermination. We all know that's not going to happen.

I'll stick around a few more episodes to see where this all goes.

Only watching cause there is nothing else on at that time i am interested in.  It's getting more and more dumb and unrealistic.  Supernova, please!   Ritter pulling out an "In Line of Fire" gun, please!

I'm so mad that I have to bump this thread up.

But I've just finished watching a five episode marathon I had saved to my DVR, and I don't even know what the fuck is going on with this show. So Dempsey turns out to be a Sentinel, descended from a line of Sentinels who've been protecting earth from alien invaders. Fine, but why was experimenting on children and turning them into senior citizens? Please tell me that I just missed an episode, and an explanation for this.

The White House stuff is pretty much the only thing that's keeping me tuned in. Yes, its very 24ish but it actually entertaining watching the VP completely implode in front of out eyes. Any sense of reason or logic is best kept at bay with this show. But hey, that's what one expects with Sci-fi anyway.

The Demsey stuff was a complete waste, unless they come up with a decent explanation. As is the Jason Ritter and hot sidekick storyline.

Whoa, this is still on?!

Not for long. Announced as canceled today.

Did they ever say what the Event was?  I've watched most of the series on FFW so maybe I missed it.

Kill the gf and let Ritter hook up with the hitwoman.

Well, everything did basically a 180 degree shift when they brought new people in to try to recover the ratings.  The show is still hilariously dumb though.

Hold on a second. Somebody's still watching this?

Not at all surprised. The thing with these types of shows (V as well), aliens taking over the Earth etc., is with the potential of being canceled at any moment how do you actually create a narative.

So I just wonder how they'll end this knowing they're not coming back.

A big cliffhanger since i'm sure they didn't know and only 1 show left.

Wow, kinda sorry there will be no fall premiere.

Yeah, the hilarious thing would be for them to all get to earth and then realize that by infecting a half human-half alien person with this extremely deadly virus they've also made a strain that THEY CAN CATCH. Besides the fact that they had no idea how viruses actually work, how could it not have struck any of them as a bad idea to put it in a host that moves it closer to being something that would be contagious to them.

Oh well, they could have always killed Leila during childbirth and had brunette chick take over as an adopted mother for yet another child.
