Hawaii Five-O (2010)

I was pretty surprised to find myself enjoying this. It's certainly not ground-breaking, but there's a palpable chemistry between the leads, and the action was pretty well-done for a network show. And it sure doesn't hurt to have that glorious theme song kick things off.
Well, hell. I guess I will watch this tonight then, and catch Castle and the Chaser thing tomorrow on Hulu or their sites.
Better than I expected. Scott Caan was the funniest since he explained "the stranger " in "Gone in 60 Seconds"...worth the DVR space.
The leads worked well despite the awful writing. But there's time to improve since this will be one of the big hits this fall. I'll give it a few weeks. Why not?

Certainly better than The Event.
That was the worst pilot that I have ever seen. The principal cast was fine and I was paid off with Grace Park in a bikini but the writing was horrible. Seriously if I look back and think about how much tv I've watched, how many shows, I can't think of a single show from the last 10 years that was as bad as this.
So, are all the non-white people really racist in Haiwaii or something? Or is it just their way of sticking it to the man?

The whole pilot felt like the former vampire was getting introduced to everyone, but that's pilots I guess. The cast works well enough off of each other to make me willing to watch it for now though. Seems like they're working in some serialized aspects to the show too, or at least something to have tie the season together.

Edit: Will Yun Lee's Martin Yan Can Cook voice is hilarious.

This. God it was horrible.

ETA although the jump on the hood as the car was about to crash into Kevin Hiatt from The Shield was pretty legit.

Native Hawaiians are, in general, not big fans of the white man.

Shows from the last decade I doubt this was worse than:

Father of the Pride
The Geena Davis Show
Fastlane
Madigan Men
The Education of Max Bickford
Young Americans
The Mountain

I almost gave up on this after the first 20 minutes: the writing was terrible and the plotting was forced. It started to gel once McGarrett and Danno got to actually PLAY THEIR CHARACTERS, though. They have a genuine chemistry between them that I can see developing into a really fun team as the series goes on.

Daniel Dae Kim did some really awful acting in this. Part of it can be blamed on the terrible dialog that he was given, but he was really flat and unconvincing in his delivery.
Wow, not nearly as bad as you guys are making it out to be.

It's got a fun cast with decent chemistry and their budget for action scenes seems astronomical. Not to mention; Hawaii seems like such a fun place to set a show like this. I'll probably watch the next episode at least.

Also: Seconded on the hood jump, rewound it to make sure it was him that did the stunt.
The dialog that the characters were given was really laughable.

I'M A COP ON THE EDGE AND I DON'T PLAY BY THE RULES. GET OUT OF MY WAY WHILE I SOLVE MY DAD'S MURDER.

OH YEAH? WELL I'M A COP ON THE EDGE TOO. DON'T GET BETWEEN ME AND MY DAUGHTER WHO I MOVED OUT HERE TO BE CLOSE TO.

YEAH? WELL I USED TO BE A COP ON THE EDGE UNTIL I WAS ACCUSED OF TAKING MONEY. YOUR DAD TRUSTED ME AND YOU CAN TRUST ME TOO.

YEAH? WELL I WILL BE A COP ON THE EDGE WHEN I GRADUATE FROM THE ACADEMY IN A WEEK. PUT ME IN A BIKINI AND I'LL HELP.

I'm glad that this shit is out of the way.

Hahaha, fair enough.

Oh yeah?! Well, we got two ex-vampires fighting Bourne style! Bourne style! So there.
You take that back about Fastlane Rath. YOU TAKE IT BACK RIGHT NOW!
Scott Caan pretty much was the only thing keeping this show afloat. If it's a hit, it'll be because of him.

Second. I'd rather watch any eyecandyful episode of FASTLANE again before I season passed this thing.

Not impressed with the show overall, but I give a third vote of "Alright now!" to the hood jump. That was really nicely done.
Fastlane sucked, and sucked hard. That's what happens when you let McG run his own show and not have someone like Josh Schwartz or Eric Kripke backing him up.
Rath, your blasphemy will not be tolerated.

I checked this out during the 20 minute commercial breaks during MNF last night. I thought it was ok, standard police thing. I was hoping for something more interesting, but it was just ok. About on par with NCIS: Los Angeles except slightly better since it has Grace Park (yes, I have a thing for Asian girls. That is what happens when you grow up around Filipinos.)
I don't see the hate. This was pretty f'n good. Of course I am also counting down the days to CSI:Miami. This gets a year run.

I doubt all of those combined are worse than Baby Bob.

Don't get such hate, either. I found it tapped the same light, breezy vein as Human Target - some pretty bloody fantastic action on a TV budget (aforementioned hood jump/slide, guy gets hit by truck, shoot-outs looked nice), doesn't take itself too seriously, and a pretty likable cast that I'm sure will grow into their roles as it progresses.

Went in with rather low expectations, admittedly, but was really surprised how much I enjoyed this.

I completely agree with the review in spite of acknowledging the show's shortcomings.

But as an old fogey just the theme and hearing "Book'em, Danno" buys it a bit more goodwill than I'd be willing to provide otherwise.

ETA:Holy Pope on a Sybian! Grace Park is my age?
The second episode was an improvement over the first. The awkward character introductions from the pilot are gone, THANK GOD. The only thing that is really making this show sing is Scott Caan, though; his chemistry with the block of wood that is McGarrett is really strong and entertaining to watch.
Yeah Scott Caan and Grace Park do it for me. Hopefully Grace Park can use her gun now and not be strictly held to her fists.
"Really? Is that going to be a thing now?"
this episode did a good job of explaining away one of my biggest worries, but nonetheless I still think it ... In 10-20 episodes, if not much sooner, they are going to have a real tough time making it believable or fun that ANOTHER massive bad-boys-esque shootout is happening in hawaii of all places. Also same goes for the "stunt of the week" (especially if they are as bad as this weeks jump down the hanging chain... it was laughable).

But so far its decent enough. Never watched the old show, but was the main character supposed to be as charismatic and likeable as a rock? If so, it should focus much more on the ensemble than him, because as it stands, we're spending too much emotional dramatic time with the attractive, but more than somewhat robotic lead.

And please god, make it stop ... it was embarassing the first time he said it, and the focus on it is even worse... forget what i said before ... if THIS is still going on ten episodes in, its done for.

Eh, for me, this version is so steeped in nostalgia for the original show that if they're gonna have it, this is the way to do it.

I do hope Grace Park doesn't turn into the one who always gets kidnapped or needs to be rescued. She's a strong character, and I'd like to think we're beyond needing to have the woman as damsel in distress all the time.

Come on, if you're gonna have a problem with "Book'em Danno" in a Hawaii Five-O reboot of all places you might as well complain about the main theme.

Context people. Again, this is a Hawaii Five-O reboot, not Treme.

Thanks, Stelios. Thanks for coming up with an image that can make me stop lusting after Grace Parks.

(though, watching his pope hat bobble around is kinda making me laugh)

Speaking of Grace Park, that was a nifty brutal little fight she had with the blonde.
I'm enjoying the interplay between the four main leads, but this week's plot was laughably stupid. There are shows I watch for the actors in spite of the writing, but I'm undecided if this will become one yet.
Scott Cann is making this show for me. I've never really liked Alex O'Loughlin, but they have some pretty excellent chemistry. My guess is Martin Starr saw one of John Francis Daley's paychecks and decided to get him some of that sweet network tv money.

Also, Peter Stormare, you got fat. Guess this show is where beloved nerd icons go to die.

Yeah, I was thinking the exact same thing. It's a reboot of a TV show with one of the most iconic themes AND catchphrases of the history's medium. No offense, but if you're gonna get riled up about them working it in there, you really shouldn't be watching in the first place, should you?

I find Caan's head and hair fascinating to look at. He looks like Johnny Bravo come to life.

Watched both the pilot and 2nd ep on CBS.com over the weekend, and now I'm hooked. Of course, Grace Park was the biggest reason for me to start watching this religiously; she's just too fine. I can watch her read a phonebook probably.

The Dan O ring tone for the lawyer was the best .

Random thoughts...

The show's scripts are still pretty terrible, but I'm enjoying it for what it is.

Alex O'Loughlin has gone from black hole of charisma in the pilot to a serviceable leading man.

Scott Caan seems like the covert star of the show. Here's a character, Danno, who should be annoying -- a Mainland cop who refuses to adapt to island ways and, at least, in the beginning, hates everything that makes Hawaii great. And yet he is the most sympathetic and fun character on the show. I'm wondering if the "unseen" ex-wife will be a gag they'll keep for the entirety of the series.

So far, Daniel Dae Kim has been just okay. It seems like he -- or perhaps more accurately, the showrunners -- were trying way too hard to make Chin Ho Kelly seem "local," especially in the pilot (why does he keep spouting Hawaiian?). But all the local references (which I do appreciate) are starting feel less forced (Yay, malasadas!). I'm guessing discovering who framed him for being a dirty cop will be dealt with in a future episode.

Grace Park is pretty, but man, she would it kill her to eat a cheeseburger? She is way to skinny to be kicking anybody's ass. Would have liked to have seen some follow-up on her and Danno's fake kissing.

Curious to see how Taryn Manning and Masi Oka will be introduced in the show.

One thing that bugs me about the show is how "international" they're trying to make Hawai'i. There's no doubt it's a place of international interest, except the showrunners seem to be pulling characters from the wrong direction: IRISH terrorists in episode 1 (the fact that Reedus hides out in NORTH KOREA is absurd)? SERBIAN terrorists in episode 2? A mafia don from New Jersey in episode 3??? I know this is a fantasy version of Hawai'i, but crap, it could have some bearing in reality.

Really enjoying "spot the guest star" -- Spike from Buffy, a Boondock Saint, the kid who reads Gogol in Adventureland,, Steve Buscemi's least favorite person in Fargo, Doogie Houser's best friend, and a young Sam Winchester so far...(yes, I know all the actors' names),
post #40 of 88
Such a silly gag for Danno to spill his guts to the servant at the gate, but it still got a chuckle from me.

Still enjoying this show.

Grace Park is really trying to beat Yyvonne Strahovski for hottest TV star this year. They both make for must see tv.

Oh and when is DDK going to kick Danno's butt for kissin all on Grace Park..
The show settled into autopilot with last night's episode. Not good, not bad...just there. I'm about done with it.
Fuck that I'll quit The Event before this one, even if it's dumb-entertaining.
It's just not MUST SEE ENTERTAINMENT. It's the kind of show that you can watch once or twice a season and be content, nothing more.
yeah last's nights was definitely a snoozer.. but we learned block of wood has a sister. Also the previews show that Masi Oka is joining the cast probably as autopsy guy.
My wife and I have been catching up on this one by way of the DVR and just last night we finished by watching this week's episode. I've mostly been going back to my good ol' standbys, the show already on that I already try to watch, but of all the new shows I've tried dabbling in this is the only one that seems to have stuck. I dig it. It may be dumb fun, but it's light and entertaining and that's just fine by me.

Of course, I'm still having trouble with the name of the show. I don't think I'll ever NOT accidently call it Miami Vice every time I refer to it, but at least I catch myself doing so. Oops...
So, knowing he will now be charged with aiding and abetting in 3 murders, a prison guard admits to aiding in a felony prison break by providing a weapon that the prisoner used to murder 3 prison guards in exchange for $50K? All because two cops threatened to put him in general population in that prison this very moment, without arrest, trial or conviction?

And DL snitches in front of the entire prison yard because a cop beat him at basketball? Stupid.

Grace Park in a bikini only buys you so much goodwill, gentleman.
It's still a fun retarded show. I watch this right after Boardwalk Empire to calm the brain.
I still find the show stupid fun to watch also. Last one was not as much fun as others though.
