NHL 2010-2011 Season

Thread Starter
Pre-Season gets underway tonight.

Savard is out with post-concussion syndrome.
Jordan Staal is still out with complications from his foot laceration.

As a Toronto fan who fantasized that one of these guys might be in the Blue and White for this season, I wonder if these lingering injuries played a roll in Kaberle remaining a Maple Leaf for the coming season.

Chicago was gutted and Vancouver might be the team to beat in the west. Stevie Y looks like he's got a legitimate playoff threat with his Lightning (Lecavalier, Stamkos, St. Louis and Gagne offer a ridiculous amount of firepower). Kovalchuk is a Devil and New Jersey is out a couple of draft picks because of their nefarious cap circumventing ways. I'm hoping Toronto is at least competitive this year.

Lots of storylines going into this year. I wish the season would just start already.

Pens/Wings tomorrow. Let's do this.

While Chicago proved you can get by with an average goaltender the Bolts will need more than that to make it far in the playoffs this year.

Vancouver, if they get the Luongo of the Olympics, will be hard to beat.

Hurricanes signed Skinner today as the 18-year-old phenom plays his first Preseason NHL game tonight. If his comparisons to Crosby hold true, expect some amazing highlights this year if he makes the team.

Chicago was hardly gutted. They kept their core offensive and defensive players and replaced their role players. And as long as Vancouver has Luongo they aren't winning anything.

Looking forward to seeing how Chicago defends the title.

I guess we'll see. Excited to see Turco on that team though. If they're going to be successful I think he'll be a big factor.

St. Louis Blues are only making their season ticket holders pay half price. You pay the other half ONLY if they make the playoffs. So if the Blues totally suck, then you get a full season of hockey for 1/2 price. Interesting concept.

Skinner is a pure shooter, but don't expect him to be a game changer. not now. He's not Crosby. He's still a kid, and not Hall or Seguin.

Forget Toronto as long as Burke is there. He tried again to build the Broadstreet Bullies 2.0, but he's gonna fail. Having that Phaneuf dumbfuck as captain is the worst you can get. The dumbass played a game with the rookies. And decked one. THAT'S LEADERSHIP! And fights during the training camp!!!

Oh, you'll see physical plays and aggressivity, Kessel and Versteeg will score a bit, a good defense and Giguere is good, but forget playoffs again. and you only have Kadri as a future hope. But you'll see fights! Shame, cause Toronto isa hockey city, and deserves better than these clowns.

Yzerman's best move was getting Guy Boucher. Expect this guy to win the Jack Adams this year. He's an awesome coach. I see the Lightning finishing 7-8th in the East.

The Devils overpaid for Kovalchuk. Way too much. As soon as Brodeur is out, the team sinks, despite a tremendous offence. Hopefully Kovy won't make this team as boring to watch as the last 10 years...

And the West Powerhouse is Vancouver, followed by Chicago and LA. Vancouver got some solid D-men to help Luongo. In the East, Washington and Pittsbugh will again reign.

My Habs should finish 6-7th. Depends if Price delivers or not....

And remember the name PK Subban. He's a future D-Man star. He proved it last playoffs.

The jury is still out on whether Burke's "vision" will pan out, but I'm still a believer. The prospect cupboard has never been more full (despite the Kessel deal) and that's in large part due to him wooing college and European league players to the team (Bozak, Gustavson, Mueller, Rynnas etc).

Our offense is weak, but we've got a lot of young guys who are going to be growing together this year. Guys like Kulemin, Grabovski, Bozak, Kessel, Versteeg, Gunnarson, Schenn - these are guys who are likely to take big steps forward this year. If anything I'd put the onus on Ron Wilson, he's got to find a way to get the most out of a team as young and bottom heavy as ours.

I'm looking forward to this year. Armstrong and Versteeg are both guys who give 100% every shift. More than anything I want to see a team that is competing every night.

Also this. One of the things that struck me about Subban in the playoffs was how (relatively) big and strong he seems. I remember when he got drafted he was a shrimp, he must have hit a bit of a late growth spurt.

All of these guys are average players, Kessel, Schenn, Nazim Kadri and Versteeg excluded. Grabovski is shite. The key to offense is having a good quarterback, and for some fucked up reason Burke wants one of the best in the league, Kaberle, out because he ain't North American, thus rough and tough. That's the Burke Vision. And it's outdated. The hockey of 10 years ago. Worse, Wilson hates Kab.

You guys missed a concession player for Kessel. The one you needed. Phaneuf is an even worse deal. He was the laughingstock of Calgary, it's well known. He was hated by other players of his team. That's why he was traded.

I'd be pissed if I was a Leaf fan.

Go Ottawa Roughriders!!

Oh boy do I miss the Rough Riders vs Roughriders CFL games....
Go Habs! Martin I can only hope the Habs do better than 6th or 7th this season. Though I think they made a terrible decision in the offseason to trade away Halak.
Yes and no. It's a gamble, and on paper, Price is better than Halak. I loved the guy, but we'll know in 2-3 years if he was the real deal, or another flamboyant 2-3 years good goalie like there's no many out there.
Thats true. Price is better than Halak on paper, and he's still getting better. Price really needs to step it up this year for them to be sucessful.

I'm the dissenting opinion about the Habs fate depending mostly on Price's performance. I don't believe he'll need to be great. Consistent is what he'll need to be.

I believe the fate on the Habs rest on Markov and Subban. Markov needs to be luckier than the last two seasons and not get injured (his total games played show that he is NOT a fragile player). Having Subban should relieve some pressure from him and not make him such a target for opposing teams. If he's healthy for most of the season, we'll make the play-offs.

If Subban continues playing like he did in the play-offs, the Canadiens will have a stronger over-all play. Puck control and offense will now be possible even if Markov is on the bench, wich wasn't the case in the last forever-seasons. I was very down on the direction the team had taken last year but this youngster has got me very high.
Oh I dont believe that Price is the deciding factor for their success this season. He'll play a big part in it, but like you said...there are others on the team that will play a big part in it as well, Subban definitely being one of them. He's definitely the brightest star on the team.
Well, I fucking hate the Montreal crowd. It's a fucking PRESEASON game. Don't boo Price for that. They're the same fuckbags who's gonna complain we don'T have any goalie if he slumps or is traded (that's just an idea like that). Halak allowed 3 goals on 18 shots monday!

Fuck these assholes.

Markov will be back soon, but he'd rather see him take it easy. Subban is his successor. And I liked seeing Tinordi and Leblanc. Great potential. Leblanc might be a #2 center. Even Palushaj was fun to watch.

Fuck I hate these fuckin fucks! They're the same fucking idiots who complain that Montreal doesn't develop any first tier prospects and that every fucking player gets better once they leave Montreal!

FUCK YOU MONTREAL FANS!

Canes looked a LOT better last night. It also looks like O'Sullivan is officially on the roster the way he is playing.

Shame that it's a small and very vocal minority. Fuck'em. Your totally right about them complaining. No wonder no French-speaking player won't come here.

O'Sullivan's story is sad. I hope he makes the team and plays up to his talent.

EDIT:And Chavez, your Broons made an ace deal getting Horton. He was undervalued in Florida.

.
Well the Canes are notorious for taking the broken and lost and giving them a second chance..
Do you know his story?
well we love him because he was raised in Carolina. We had him but sent him back out in a 3-way trade to the land of the lost. The Oilers. Then picked him up again.

Just read his wiki though.. I didnt know about the abuse stuff.
Yeah. Scary shit. And wiki doesn't cover half of it.

Even after the abuse (beating the shit out of him), he was still stalking his son at games, even with retraining orders and all.
well he scored again last night in our loss 2-1. I think he's going to win that spot.
Anyone up for a fantasy hockey league? I'll start one on Yahoo if people want to play.
I'd be up, but we need to be like 10 to make it worthwhile.

Also Sean Avery: pussy, or retarded asshole? I know he's a pest, but avoiding fighting Clarckson and going after Kovalchuk is such a pussy move.
Yeah, it would only be worth it if we could get 10 people to join. I'll wait a little bit and see if anyone else on here is interested

How involved would the league be? Is there trading and stuff like that? I wouldn't mind participating if it's not a giant time commitment.
I'd go with a boxed. Something easy.
I'd love to give it a try. I've only done the fantasy thing once before but I had a good time with it. My only problem was complete lack of participation by probably half the league after the first two weeks. But that was a random pick up league so I guess I shouldn't be too surprised.
Just got back from the Canes/Thrashers game. 1 PM friday games are AWESOME. Really great crowd too for free tickets.

Skinner is truly impressive. He literally controlled the puck around 3 Thrashers who were clueless.

Sutter scored both goals too. Sutter will be an impact player this year in the NHL.
I'll give it a go.
I'm gonna go ahead and set the league up then. Seems there's enough interest.
Okay, it's all set up. League ID# is 74252, password is chud.
We need some more people in the league!
NHL season starts tomorrow at NOON. CANES vs WILD- I might need to take an extended lunch break to watch some of the game.

Having to create a Yahoo Id is a bummer. WTF is that? And we can't draft yet?

Bring it, Philthy.
We need one more person to be able to draft. Have to have an even number. Fucking sucks.

Pretty much every post I have in here will be about how amazing Skinner is.. Holy crap!

Kessel (and Tim Brent...) on pace for 82 goals. Take THAT Seguin!
It's only been one game so I won't go crazy but I really like what I saw from Eller. He reminds me of Saku Koivu but bigger.

MacCarthur scored a real nice goal yesterday.

Eller did look good. Subban looks like he's ready for top pairing minutes as well. The jury's still out on Price, but perfect deflection, a breakaway and an instance where a player is allowed to walk right out in front and shoot - are hardly goals that he should be blamed for.

Huge win for our guys though. Took us 9 games to get that first win last year.

Price did very well, Picard (on the first goal) and Spacek (all the time) were terrible.

Toronto's defense was atrocious. Burke will have made a huge mistake when Kaberle leaves. Phaneuf looks like he's never learned about positioning and who the hell is that Komisarek guy 'cause he sure doesn't play like the guy I loved in Montreal. Giguère saved TO's asses yesterday but I was really surprised by the offense's spunk and speed. Altough it may have been different if Markov and Hamrlik had played. Still, MacCarthur impressed and Kessel is the real deal.

Jesus, I know you guys are starving for a winning team, but the Leafs are still a sub-par team! As for Seguin, he's gonna be better than Kessel and Brent COMBINED. He's a rookie. Burke destroyed his team's future for short term gains. You'll lose your 2 #1 picks. One of them being SEGUIN. Wake up man. You should be furious. because you won't be seeing a dynasty like Pittsburgh or Washington did when they got their player. You build around guyis like Taylor Hall, or Seguin. Crosby. Ovechkin. Not Phil fucking Kessel (and he's a good shooter, but far from being worth 2 1st round picks). What's weird is that as much as the Leafs are the enemy, I want them good! It's a hockey town like here!

I also loved Eller. He's gonna stay in the first 2 lines I think. I'm satisfied with the game, as Markov, Hamrlik and Cammalleri were missing. But I never knew I'd miss Marc-Andr. Bergeron, but that slap-shot...

Burke is a retard. Kaberle is the best D-Men of the team and treats him like shit. Phaneuf is the most overrated d-men in the league. Guiguere is the best trade he did so far, but he makes Bob Gainey look like Sam Pollock.

And the rookie I keep watching since the Junior World Cup is Jordan Eberle. Him, Magnus Paajarvi-Svensson and Taylor Hall will make Edmonton the new powerhouse in the West in less than 3 years. And watch Matt Duchesne in Colorado.
