NHL 2010-2011 Season - Page 4

And Vancouver advances.  BOOYA!

Now THAT's a hockey game! Oh yes.

Nashville doesn't have a chance.

I'm quite happy for the Flyers too. This playoff season has been spectacular.

Aren't they all?

fuck me that was a rollercoaster, I know so many people who were ready to fuck off the canucks when the equaliser went in before time. but theOT win - people lost their shit here. Nashville? you're fucking next.

GO CANUCKS GO! So happy to see Carrie Underwood cry. ahahaa!!! CRY UNDERWOOD!!!  CRRRRRYYYYY!!!!!!

Now I just want San Jose to win. I'll still pull for the Canucks but if San Jose beats Detroit and faces them and wins, I'll jump on the Sharks bandwagon.

Oh my god! This Wings/Sharks series is going to kill me! ..........go wings.

SJ/DET was the first series in NHL history to have SIX 1-goal games... and the other game was 1-goal apart until an empty-netter at the end.

Great series, both teams played well, it was just about Niemi being a little bit better in goal.

Hockey is so damned stressful!

Dammit, Bruins, give me a heart attack during game 2, will ya? Was on edge when the Lightning closed it to one. Jesus, those non-winter having guys bring a hell of a game.

Vancouver gets a gift-wrapped game 2, as 6 minutes of high-sticking penalties right in front of officials go uncalled (back when they really mattered). The Canucks did a nice job of blowing it open late, but there's been horrifyingly bad officiating in this series so far.

Wow, another referee attempt to swing a game, as a 4-1 game becomes 4-3 thanks entirely to a horrific 5-minute major call. A hit from the side and without leaving his feet on a guy who just released the puck is not boarding. I could've sworn NBA referees had trademarked making calls based on the outcome of the play instead of the play itself. Did all the good referees retire?

At least the Sharks won this one. Hopefully they can build another 3-goal lead next game to insulate against the officials!

Right down the middle. beautiful goal.

2011 western conference champions: vancouver canucks!

OH YEAH BABY! Lord Stanley's Cup is going to be ours very, very soon.

Life is so very good right now.

Or maybe not. tongue.gif

Another excruciatingly badly officiated game (fairly evenly so this time, at least). Still, Vancouver outplayed San Jose in 2 games, and Luongo stole this one, so it's not like the Sharks got completely robbed. I don't think I'll bother to watch the Finals though, the poor level of officiating has kinda turned me off in the short term.

Too bad the series ended on such a weird fluky play, but it happens.

Good luck to Vancouver fans, I really don't want Boston to win... anything... ever again! :)

Really, people? We're three games in and no one has said anything about it so far? It's the Stanley Cup Final! And it looks like it's going to be a rough and tumble, bordering on ugly, 'hey aren't we trying to get rid of this kind of play?' series at that. Physicality is fine, I just don't want to see anyone, on either side, go down like Horton did.

Good to see the Bruins sticks show up so Thomas didn't have to shoulder all the burden.

Have you been watching these games?  Other than the dogfight nature of the first period of Game 1 this has got to be some of the slowest, lowest shooting, absolutely God-awful boring hockey I have seen in years.  I and my neighbor talked throughout Game 2 because we couldn't be bothered to watch the game it sucked so bad.

So yeah, one more win and the Cup comes home to Canada. cool.gif

Hell yeah...back to where it belongs...though I do wish it was coming back to Montreal.

I find it pretty awesome that Lapierre, a former Canadien, scored the game winning goal. I was really rooting for Montreal against Boston but alas it wasn't meant to be this year.  Outside of Vancouver, the Habs are my 2nd favourite team in the NHL.

I think it would be absolutely nuts to have two Canadian teams in the Final one year but I'm pretty happy with Vancouver's quest for the Cup. Monday night is going to be INSANE.

So happy Vancouver lost.  Cry Lou, CRY!

Stay classy Canucks fans.  Boo and throw stuff on ice.  I think even Philly was good to the Hawks last year.

OR set cars on fire:

A car burns in the fan zone in Vancouver following the Canucks loss in the Stanley Cup final. Wilson Wong/CBC

Fans lit a car on fire, set off fireworks and engaged in a flurry of fistfights in the fan zone in downtown Vancouver after the Canucks lost the final game of the Stanley Cup 4-0 to the Boston Bruins.

No injuries were reported, but there were several arrests.

Another fire believed to be in a garbage can sent a plume of smoke above the crowd in the closing seconds of the game.

Oh fuck that. Epic failure by Vancouver. What should have been their Cup goes to damn Bruins? ugh.

At least those Vancouver property costs might drop a bit.

Was hoping for a little more of a dogfight, but I will take the win regardless! Boston sports fans have been treated really well the last ten years, and have won all four major sports championships in the last 7, unprecedented.

As for Vancouver, I'm pretty sure someone got shot and died when the Sox won back in 04, but at least they were the winning team.

Tim Thomas is a beast.

How was it "their" cup?  They couldn't win on the road.

After that shit it should be another forty years before Vancouver gets another shot at it.

Like most riots at sporting events, it's rarely the real fans who start burning police cars.  The fans in the building were real classy and gave their team a standing ovation after the loss and even cheered  for the different Boston players as they hoisted the cup.

Tough break for Vancouver, but Boston was clearly the better team in the series.  It'll be interesting to see who on the Canucks was playing injured.  Gotta think either one or both of the Sedins weren't 100% after such a poor offensive showing.

Yeah, the Canucks played like shit in this series. The games that they won were only by a goal and one of them was in OT (which they got lucky with). When they went to Boston they got their asses handed to them each time. For game 7 they didn't even show up. From the drop of the puck they played poorly. They kept missing passes, missing shots, weren't paying attention etc etc... they were beat by the better team. Boston was on their game. They showed up to play. Good on the Canucks for making it to the finals. They are a great team but they just collapsed when it mattered.

Admittedly the Final series was my first look at Luongo but I got the distinct impression in Game six and seven, along with hindsight on the earlier games, that he was on the Boston payroll.  Is he always that lazy looking when pucks go by him?

The boo'd Boston and even threw stuff on the ice.

^^^^^^^^^^

Yeah, it was non-stop boo's through the entire Cup ceremony I saw, not sure which one you(Jon) were watching.  I especially thought it real classy when Bettman was handing the Cup over to Chara the two frozen beer splashes visible on the ice along with their previous containers.

Well, not non-stop exactly, they did cheer Lucic then promptly went right back to booing.

Nah Luongo is a headcase.  He psychs himself out, and Boston plays to that.  His road game sucks.

I'm not a Boston fan. At all.. but they played hard to get the cup. Who knew the Vancouver fan base was completely bonkers?

Now that the season is closed anyone got any thoughts on the Thrashers/Winnipeg move?  Luckily I was able to attend one last game back in March but speaking to my sister about it she brought up a good point,

Quote:
They had Bob fucking Hartley and managed to do do jack shit.  The ownership completely mismanaged that team.

I hate that Atlanta will never see another NHL franchise because Raleigh is an hour further away.  I cannot for the life of me fathom how Raleigh is able to maintain a team while Atlanta cannot though.  They banked on all the yankee transplants to buoy ticket sales but the problem they ran into was one that all the major Atlanta sports teams have; namely that attendees are always fans of the visiting team.  I know when I lived there I was rarely interested in a game unless it was the Avalanche in town or Detroit so I could give my sister hell if they lost to the Thrashers.

I feel like I'm taking crazy pills.  I was watching the CBC feed - and while there were some boos mixed in with the cheers (particularly right as the clock was ticking down) I thought it turned overwhelming to cheers after that.  Well, until Bettman hit the ice anyway.  But whatever.

Anyone else surprised that there wasn't more talk about Savard throughout the playoffs?  I think there was a little bit of talk about him helping with their PP, but I sort of expected him to be a rallying figure for the team (this turned out to be Horton I guess).  Was he on the ice for the cup celebration?

I was in Rogers Arena Wednesday and the only booing was when Bettman was talking. When a Boston player touched the cup it changed to cheering. It was actually quite impressive how quick we switched gears.

As for as the game went, Boston just played better, period.

I know the media was all over the riot globally, but did any of them report that a large contingent of people were actually helping clean up downtown first thing Thursday morning? Kinda curious, as those are the true fans and people that deserve at least a little positive coverage. The idiots from the night before were looking to start shit, and would have done so win or lose.

Interesting.  Definitely will defer to that but the NBC coverage sounded very much like the only cheering was for Vancouver afterwards then straight booing until Lucic was handed the Cup.

I don't get the hate that people seem to have for Bettman.  He has always seemed to be one of the better Commissioners of any of the sports.

I think his insistence on trying to make franchises work in US markets that are clearly indifferent is the main problem most Canadian NHL fans have with him. As an example, I watched him during the press conference announcing the Winnipeg franchise return and it was quite evident to me that he HATES the idea of them going back there. When part of your opening statement to a city that just was awarded a team is something to the effect of "Well I guess you got what you wanted, so you had better support them" that says a lot.

Dig that.  I understand why Canada lost so many franchises in the 90's due to several reasons but one of the biggest being the exchange rate and my understanding the players are paid in American dollars.  It would seem now though that the rate has pretty much evened out that teams would have no problem leaving unsupportive US markets.

True. It will be interesting to see what will happen if our dollar goes pear shaped again. The salary cap will help a bit, but I'm not sure its going to make a huge difference if our buck is only worth 60 cents of yours or whatever it was.

When I got into hockey in 1996 it was .75 roughly.  I was in college with quite a few Canadians and they were constantly bitching about it.  I believe you guys are a few cents ahead nowadays.

The thing is that Bettman really has no understanding of hockey at all. I would prefer someone who's actually been involved with the sport to replace him.

They did, yes. They were talking about the Facebook campaigns to post pictures of people and help identify them and the groups/events to help clean the city up.

Skinner wins the Caulder! All is right in the world! Go Canes!

Happy for Skinner - although under the criteria ("to the player selected as the most proficient in his first year of competition in the NHL") it probably should have gone to Grabner.  Doing what Skinner did at 18 is more impressive than what Grabner did at 23, though.
