"Black Swan" to Open Philadelphia Film Festival

Natalie Portman in "Black Swan" Black Swan, Darren Aronofsky's psychological thriller set in the competitive world of ballet and starring Natalie Portman, Mila Kunis and Winona Ryder, will open the 19th annual Philadelphia Film Festival on October 14. 127 Hours, Danny Boyle's true-life tale of the adventurer Aron Ralston (James Franco) who cuts off his arm to save himself, will be the festival's closing-night movie on October 23. In between the Aronofsky film and the one about Aron, some 108 films will show at six venues in the region, from the Ritz Five to the Prince Music Theater to the Zellerbach Theater at UPenn to the Bryn Mawr Film Institute.

Among the highlights of the festival bringing the best of Sundance and Cannes festivals to Philadelphia are Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives, this year's Cannes Palme d'Or winner from Thai filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul, White Material, Claire Denis' account of French colonials running a coffee plantation in an unnamed African country, and Carlos, Olivier Assayas' six-hour portrait of infamous assassin "Carlos the Jackal."

A marathon screening on October 17 of the Millennium Trilogy -- The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest -- will delight Stieg Larsson completists. And fans of M. Night Shyamalan will enjoy the October 21 screening of Unbreakable, his third feature, and the post-screening Q & A with the director afterwards.

Other promising features include Night Catches Us, Tanya Hamilton's portrait of African-American life in Philadelphia during the 1970s, 11/04/08, a documentary mosaic about the runup to the 2008 presidential election, and Fair Game, with Naomi Watts and Sean Penn, and Certified Copy, Abbas Kiarostami's fim about originals and forgeries.

Apart from Night Catches Us, other festival films with Philadelphia connections are The Best and the Brightest, a staire of parents trying to get their kids admitted to elite schools, where Philadelphia locations sub for New York; and OC87: The Obsessive Compulsive, Major Depression, Bipolar Asperger's Movie, Bud Clayman's essay film about his struggles with mental health.

Just got the e-mail. VERY happy with this lineup. I gave it a quick one-over, but I'd love to see:

Black Swan
High School
Hesher
A Serbian Film
Rubber
127 Hours
The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest
Welcome to the Riley's
Four Lions

I'll likely only see the smaller movies of this list, though. Trying to save money and I can see the bigger movies when they come out shortly after. Not to mention, I'll probably want to see a bunch once I start reading what each movie is.

Promising lineup. Love that they added the "From the Vault" category. FOR YOUR HEIGHT ONLY? THE ROOM? Yes please.

Is "From The Vault" going to be "from someone's DVD collection"?

Dan, forward me the email?

Doesn't the film society usually show DVD's and not prints of all the movies anyway? I thought I'd heard that somewhere...

I definately will be at Hesher. [Edit] (I had work, so I missed Aronofsky). I heard he was rude at the Q and A which is a shame.

BTW: No exchanges on Tickets allowed. I found that out the hard way. This festical was better run when it was in April and had TLA paying the bills.

Unfortunately, I won't be able to check out many movies this year (internship, economy, etc). I did check out a few good ones on Friday...

Lebanon, Pa. Good. Not great. great first time performance from an actress named Rachel Kitson. She told me after the Q and A that she is deciding whether to be a theatre or movie actress after college. And No i didn't get her number.

Blue Valentine If the Oscars were about actual talent and performance then Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams would win. Really depressing though

Hesher JGL is basically playing a hetereosexual and more comedic version of his character in Mysterious Skin. He is awesome in the movie. But he is always awesome. The movie is definately worth checking out.

Did anyone see Four Lions yesterday at 4:50? Is it worth seeing on Friday?

Eh, it toed the line, maybe crossed it a little, but I think if anyone is genuinely upset about it they're being oversensitive. He definitely was being a bit snarky/sarcastic but I'm pretty sure it was mostly meant jokingly and just didn't land right with the crowd. He probably could have been a little more patient in indulging the bad questions though. Like, when someone asks you to explain what your movie means I get not wanting to say but his response was pretty terse. I dunno, I thought it was mostly funny and a lot of his answers were sincere and interesting.

As for how the festival is run, my experience so far has been fine, about on par with the usual, i.e. not perfect but that's to be expected. Screenings start late but it's always like that and it's across the board so it hasn't made me late for anything.

And on a related note I have to say, I've seen 9 films so far and the majority of them have been actual film prints, and of the ones that were digital only one didn't look great. So I'm tentatively feeling like they've stepped up their game with the presentation, but maybe I've just been lucky so far. Prepared for disappointment when I show up for the midnight screening of THE ROOM on friday and they're projecting a DVD

Yes on both counts re: FOUR LIONS
