DON'T BE A SCHNOOK, READ THIS GOODFELLAS INTERVIEW

GQ remembers 20 years of Goodfellas with style.

That steadicam operator's take on the Copa shot is freakin' priceless...

Thanks Renn!

"Lewis: There was a moment when we were concerned about the Jimmy Conway part. Marty had offered it to another actor, and that actor turned the role down.

Winkler: The studio made it clear that they were looking for a star for the role. John Malkovich was discussed."

Oooh maaan...

Don't stop quoting there!

John Malkovich (actor): It sort of came at a bad time in my life, when I wasn't feeling well and didn't want to think about working. It's hard to explain why you end up in Eragon and not GoodFellas. But De Niro is fantastic.

This was so much much fun until they brought up the Dances With Wolves getting the Oscars fucking bullshit and made me angry.
I love articles like this. Just comprised of all the voices who made it happen. Great stuff.

And nah, Stelios. Imperioli's "When was the last time you rented Dances with Wolves?" saves that section.
Yeah, this was fantastic. Spent the last half hour at work reading it.
Loved the story of the "Do you think i'm funny?" scene.
Thanks, Renn! Awesome read that I'll have to dive into more when I get off work.
My favorite bit is Scorsese telling the guy he'd tell Paul Sorvino they'd changed the scene, then not telling him so that Sorvino was legitimately angry in their scene.
Yeah, amazing read. Will probably have to throw the movie in later tonight.

I immediately added it to my Netflix queue so that it would be the next one I would get. How would you not want to rewatch the film after reading this?!
I'll be savoring this shortly. Thanks Renn.

Yeah... couldn't wait till after work. Great, great read.

Douglas: He creates an environment on-set where you literally did not know the difference between when the camera was on and when the camera was off, this environment where nobody feels as if they're embarrassed or did something wrong. When we were filming the bar scene [where everyone is celebrating the Lufthansa heist], it was like this huge tracking thing, very, very elaborate. I was doing sketch comedy and had no real clue what I was doing, so I was thinking, When the camera comes to me, I'll give my line a button by taking a sip of wine: ba-dum-bum! The shot had taken two hours to set up, and as soon as I did the wine, I was like, "Why did I do that? That was so misguided." But Marty came over waving his arms. "Hold it, hold it! Camera problem. Sorry, everyone." And he came really close to me and whispered in my ear, "Don't—" and I said, "I know." To me, that's a classic Marty thing. I've been on a million sets where people say, "What is she doing?"

Might have something to do with him fucking you at the time...

70 walkouts, that's awesome. So was the guy wanting his 4 grand, or he'll break all the cameras.

Great article. I think I might pop in Casino or Mean Streets tonight to break the trend going on in this thread. (I watched Goodfellas a few months ago. Too soon!)

Still reading. My favorite quote so far...

Quote:
Liotta: Marty would tie my tie every day. There was a certain way that he wanted it done.
That is a director that gives a fuck.

Thanks for the link Renn, this is a fantastic read!

I wish I had 1/8th the amount of manic attention and energy Scorsese does. It's humbling to see how innately he just gets it.
Absolutely fascinating, I would've liked to hear from Pesci about working on it though.
Pesci's always been kind of press shy. I imagine now that he's in pseudo retirement (two roles in the last ten years), I guess that goes double.
Regardless, it was a fascinating read. I'm torn on the highlight being the threat to destroy the cameras or Imperioli's Dances With Wolves diss. Thank god I don't have to choose.

I love these retrospective interviews. GQ did something similar for the 15 year anniversary of TRUE ROMANCE a couple of years back.
This was a great read -- I loved all the real wiseguy stories myself. And that quote from Malkovich is one for the ages. They should put that on his tombstone. Better yet, make it the official slogan of Hollywood.

You can't understand because you're not the Mediterranean type. They disrespected him in front of his own damn mother. This is grounds for a fucking beating. All the belated Oscars and posterity in the world don't matter unless someone personally apologized to her for this.

Isn't it ok to love both Dances with Wolves AND Goodfellas?

Cause I do.

Go home and get your fuckin' shinebox.
It's okay to love both, so long as you love one more and act with consistent, transparent favoritism toward it.

I think it should be quoted here first! Made me laugh.

I have the film playing as I'm reading the retrospective interviews. It's on the cocaine/gun run sequence. My heart is beating like crazy. So good.

I'm glad we don't live in a world where Tom Cruise and Madonna were in Goodfellas. John Malkovich though? That blows my mind and I think might have been an interesting and maybe better alternative.
Sweet read, I wish there were 10 more pages...

Tom Cruise & Madonna...(shudder)

Obviously Marty losing to Costner was a crime, but I was always miffed that DeNiro got nominated for Awakenings instead of this...and that Liotta didn't get nominated at all...

GF is the movie that kickstarted my love of film and was the first film that made me realize how much of an influence on the quality of a movie a director has.
