Modern Family - Season 2

Great season premiere. Further proof that their Emmy win was warranted.

"Questioning my selling ability? That's crossing the line. And if you can't see the line, that's because I just sold it."

That was my Vietnam. And i was in Vietnam.

That pretty much destroyed me.

Also, Cam making the sandwiches.

Great start. The show has lost none of its humour. Really impressive how it can nail so many different styles of comedy: the subtle wordplay, the intelligent callbacks, the slapstick, the loud, the quiet, everything just works. Lightning in a bottle folks.

"Do you think the town of Brigadoon just magically appeared? Well, it did, but..." As well as Mitchell sticking his head out the window of the castle as saying, "Who's the bitch now, bitches?"

Welcome back, gang.
Oh, and the bit in the station wagon was just a brilliant piece of comic escalation.

And further proof that Ed O' Neill not getting a nomination was insane. His facial expressions alone in this episode were pure gold.

Wow, surprised to see the gushing comments. While I thought this was a great episode, I expected a premiere to have more oomph. It wasn't bad at all, but I mostly chuckled instead of the guffaws that ensued during the second half of Running Wilde. Shame, I love Modern Family, but I guess somehow I expected a little more.
Yeah, I thought it was funny but I don't find the show as hilarious as others do. The premiere didn't seem better or worse than any other episode.

Gotta agree with Dickson, the station wagon scene was greatness.

Phil trying to figure out how to fix a wormhole from collapsing slayed me.

And Claire's, "Back down here, Phil" in response to it.

Or sunshine in a jar.
Damn, I wish I was smart enough to think of that first
post #13 of 179
"This time? I hope he kills me. I don't think I would be an inspirational crippled person."
"Remember Mr. Buckety?"
"Cmon back, Phil" (he's trying to figure out how to make a wormhole not collapse...or something).
"That was my Vietnam...and I was in Vietnam."
"That one didn't look like it was on purpose." "It was!"
"We're men...not cavemen."
No words for the stationwagon scene.

So glad to have this back.
This had monster ratings. I guess winning an Emmy for best comedy helps?
I thought the scenes with Manny and his mom were kind of weak. All the jokes felt a bit telegraphed. There were some great lines and moments, but overall I didn't find this episode that great compared to others in the show's past.

Until the station wagon scene.

I was watching it on my laptop in a library and thought I was going to die from holding in the laughter. That was great stuff.

All things considered, it feels good to have the gang back.
The station wagon scene all the way to "What's the plan here, Phil?" was by far the best thing in this episode.
Nice to see them finally tackle the "Why don't Mitchell and Cameron ever kiss?" issue, but the highlight for me was Alex's gloriously awkward visit to the boy's house. From her nervously quoting Notting Hill to the reveal of the soccer team to her fleeing down the street, that whole scene just killed.

And Luke and Manny thinking the printed picture of the grandmother was her ghost and throwing it away followed by Phil's elation turning to despair when it seemed the printer didn't work was pretty great too.
Interesting, I thought the kids throwing the picture and running off felt a tad forced and predictable - at least that whole set-up.

I found the scene with Ed O'Neill slapping and screaming to be hilarious as hell. Cam falling, although silly and staged, was funny. And then Phil's line: (paraphrased) "Ok, after rebooting the router, dodging remarkably aggressive spiders, spilling a paint can and throwing up a little, it's working!"

And I used to wonder why Claire was with Phil. But I am starting to get it. Her manipulation causes so much unnecessary trouble. They are perfect for each other.
paraphrasing, but
"I spent an hour screaming the death out of her meat" may go on my tombstone. Holy crap.

A little, but it was redeemed by the payoff with Phil.
I liked that they put the kiss in the background and made it no big deal. That was really smart, and the absolute best way to do it.
Yes.

This episode was fantastic. The fact that the kids can kill, its something amazing.

Ty Burrel not having an emmy baffles me. When he got Jay's call, i almost died laughing.

And shit Sofia Vergara cooking.

Ty's been amazing in everything I've seen him in. Especially hurt when Back to You was canned. This show is just a monster though, ratings keep climbing.

Loved this episode but not as much as the season premier
post #24 of 179
This episode was worth it for the brunch titles alone, especially "Seder Day Night Fever".
I didn't particularly care for this one. The only laugh i got was from Luke. That kid is amazing. And Ty Burrel and him got a great great chemistry.
I did think the Nathan Lane cameo was a bit clumsy, simply because Lane just can't be subtle to save his life, so he really stood out like a sore thumb.
Lane was a pretty worthless cameo. The fact that he didn't do, well, anything, didn't help.

I'm starting to wish they'd mix up the characters more. All the characters are so great that they could throw any random 2 or 3 together and have it be good.
The kids made this episode. Phil grates sometimes. When he's front and center, its can be too much. I was kinda put off by the religious aspects mainly because I just had to sit through a similar topic watching Glee. Still, solid episode. I didn't think Lane was a major misstep. And yeah, "Seder Day Night Fever" was brilliant.
This was a great episode.
Cam's and Mitchel's storyline was the funniest one. While Phil's and Claire's was the sweetest.

The shoulder gag killed me.

Yeah, it took a moment for the shoulder gag to hit me, then I lost it. And the two daughters really brought it during that last phone call.

And Jay at the engagement party was almost Michael Scott-ian in its awkwardness.
Wasn't great. But when Cam started talking like a Native American i totally lost it.
Also, Phil's reaction to everything. Ty Burrell is essential to my life now.
Luke's bit with the condo was awesome.

Wasn't great?!

I mean c'mon: Disabled Interracial Lesbians with an African kicker? The parrot next door? Jay's "niiice" to Luke's eating? Claire yelling "representative"? Manny's hand shaking from 5 espressos?

This episode was golden.

* "...that's awesome." one of my favorite parts.

Really really good ep, best of the season so far. Both Gloria and Claire getting really funny stuff to do (loved Claire's phone reservations call) really pushed it into amazing episode territory.
I knew where Hayley was going with the soap and the marker, so her eventual victory was sort of telegraphed, but what sold it was her, "I spent two days in my room talking to a bar of soap!"

What's great is I could easily watch a show focusing on any one of the three families.

Yeah, I'm not a huge fan of the show but all three stories kept my attention so that says something. I loved how the show played up the tokenism inherent in admission to most private institutions. Cameron's Native American speech ("my people grow maize, that is corn in English...") had me rolling.

As did anything Luke did. His bowl slurping was pure genius. Alex schooling her parents on biology and Phil suggesting she was making the words up in an attempt to trick them; Hailey's fake phone; Claire trying to make reservations via the land line...all funny stuff.

And the whole neighbor subplot was great. I was dying when he rightfully was freaked out by Manny's non-kid like behavior and his exasperation with their "parrot" always squawking.

Best ep by far.
I didn't say it wasn't good. It was good. But it just wasn't as good as some of you are making it to be.

I keep saying this every episode. But the kid that plays Luke is amazing.

Oh shit. I have no clue why I remembered it as him saying, "niiiice".

Tati - That is interesting. I can't recall if I said this before, but I find Luke to be the most painful part of the show. The actor that plays him is terrible to me, and it constantly yanks me out of the episode almost every time. This might explain our opposing opinions of the episode a bit.

However, I forgot about a scene that nearly caused my dinner to exit through my nose violently. The bit when Gloria showed up behind Manny and Jay in the garage. Creepy as fuck, but goddamned hilarious!
Gloria killing the rat and then saying, "I'm going to church" was a real high point for her as well. And also the subtle "Obama steak" she threw in when yelling at Jay about not going to the quinceanera. Nice that they didn't make a big deal out of it, just let it play.
The "..and now we have pickles" line killed me.

The writers were on fire. The best ep of the series so far, IMO.

That was because of the drawn out peeeeeckles.

I might have missed somebody mentioned it, but I loved "Don't take this the wrong way, but I have almost no faith in you."

My wife and I had to rewind Cameron's speech at the pre-school. His speech and the look on his face is so funny that it's easy to miss Mitchell's amazing reaction as it's happening.
It's too bad Glenn Shadix passed away, because, after a throwaway comment to my wife last night, I can't stop seeing him as Cameron's father.
Phil's little moments are my favorite. His gradual change of shaking his head from Yes to No when Luke asks about playing Plants vs. Zombies was phenomenol.
Last year I thought this show was way overrated, and not nearly as smart and well-wriiten as my favorite NBC Thursday night shows, and certainly not deserving of the Emmys it recieved. But if this last episode is any indication of the quality we can expect in the future, I guess I'll have to eat my fucking hat.
I really loved this episode and in some ways it was kind of the perfect way to do a Halloween episode for a sitcom. It was kind of a horror story for each character because it exploited some of their worst fears. For Mitchell it was of course being the odd man out at his firm. He is someone who probably already feels he is different from everyone and to be out of place at the firm is horrifying. It's even more brilliant with the juxtaposition of Cameron's horror story. For Phil it's the idea of losing Claire without even realizing it and the loss of the family life that he loves so. For Gloria it's the fear of her heritage ostracizing her from the family, which was pretty awesomely done with her accent. And for Claire it's the fear of all these different cultures usurping her role as the maternal figure. They all tie into isolation too.
Luke's costume, paired with his "I'm your mother now!" absolutely destroyed me. Great episode.
