THE CANUCKSPLOITATION MASTERPIECE YOU NEVER SAW

Every filmmaker gets his start somewhere. For Ivan Reitman, the film that started it all was Cannibal Girls. Glad he got a second chance.

Canada has actually produced numerous horror films particularly in the seventies and eighties. It's how we built up our film industry, by doing what became known as quota quickies (different then the original quota quickies in the thirties which involved many RCMP movies and half naked starlets).

Cannibal Women is particularly terrible but wonderful at the same time. Like the Ozspolitation movies they have a particular look and esthetic that you can't help but fall in love with.

I have an old horror book my Dad got me back in 1998 that had a short piece about Cannibal Girls. Never seen it though.

Glad to hear it's getting a solid dvd release. Shout! Factory is fast becoming a flagship company for genre releases. Right up there with Blue Underground, and Synapse. That's awesome.

Precisely.

For anyone interested in dipping their toes in this water, CANUXPLOITATION is a great place to start. It's a indespensable resource with incredibly good articles that work as a crash course on this stuff. Highlights are discovering Candian film's "Tax Shelter" period Ryan mentioned and seeing how much a breeding ground it was for actors and directors we here in the States just somehow suddenly "knew".

Sadly, though frighteningly thorough they miss my personal favorite from the late 70s, PLAGUE. Not particularly great ANDROMEDA STRAIN takeoff, but as Ryan mentioned, the weirdly austere quality (not to mention the phenomenally bleak locations) keeps the creep factor bouyed.

I haven't seen Plague. Heard of it but it's hard to find.

I was raised on movies like the original My Bloody Valentine, The Brood, Class of 1984 and The Beast Within so I love the idea of this kind of film getting wider release.

Thanks for the link to Canuxploitation, soylent, I've never been. It's kinda like strolling threw my pre-teen and teen years all over again.
