Brewster McCloud (1970)

What an incredible film. It doesn't reach that upper level that films like Nashville or McCabe and Mrs. Miller reach, but it's so unique and delightful in so many ways that it's kind of hard to care. Part fantasy story about a Houston boy (Bud Cort) who wants to fly and his guardian angel/ bird, part counter-culture comedy, part detective film (complete with a detective flown in from San Fransisco and a 10 minute car chase), this movie is incredibly eclectic and quirky in ways that few movies are.

It's a movie that's a lot like Into the Wild, thematically, about wanting to be free and the toll that takes on your relationships with others. It's got the dark humor and disdain for authority that made MASH such a hit, but it was way too weird to ever find an audience, which is a real shame. I'm guessing this will never be on DVD, unless Criterion or likeminded Force Of Good comes along and rescues it, but if you ever get a chance to see this film, do NOT pass it up.

Also, best curtain call ever.

EDIT: Also, there's a scene where a girl looks at Bud Cort's mostly naked body while doing chin-ups, gets super horny, and starts masturbating while listening to him grunt. BUD CORT.

DVR'd this last night, look forward to sitting down with this at some point this weekend. I have a vague recollection of seeing bits and pieces when I was young, but I might be wrong. I've had it on my radar for awhile, so it was nice to finally snag it.

Another interesting thing is that this movie seems to be more the work of a cinephile than other Altman movies I've seen. He plays a lot with genre and with movie references, which is something I've never noticed in his other films.

I'm so pissed. I saw this was on TCM last night halfway through. Too late to DVR it.

Good news is that this IS available, remastered, via Warner Brother's DVD On Demand service.
