Apparently, the original cut of Gamera vs Viras is 71 minutes, but Daiei had a contract obligation for a 90 minute film, which is why the movie is padded with stock footage. Even then, I thought the film was kind of weak, because most of the monster action doesn't occur until the final ten minutes of the movie. I thought Gamera vs Gyaos played out better, as it had the better combination of zany-ness (Luring out Gyaos with fake blood) and fun (The whole harbor fight).

I'm not at all surprised, if that's the case, Mac. It feels Ghost In The Shell empty the second that old footage comes in. Like a clip show bound for the big-screen.

I enjoyed the various attempts to defeat Gyaos, too, but the combination of Viras's improved production values and kiddie characters won out for me. Plus, Viras is a much cooler, more sophisticated villain than Gyaos. And he looks absolutely bananas.

Thanks for weighing in!
