The Office Season 7 - Page 7

My wife hates Spader on a personal level (don't ask, she waited tables in high school and he came in while shooting Stargate) but still thought he was pretty funny.  Between him and also the scene where Jim admitted the conversation had gotten away from him as the whole office talked about which candidates they were voting for I thought this was pretty solid.

It was completely unbelievable that, in this hiring climate, there wouldn't be a line out of the door of qualified candidates. James Spader's character came the closest to being qualified, and he was absolutely terrifying.

Given the options presented, and despite his limitations, I'd go with Darryl, since he'd likely command more respect than Andy ever would.

I miss the old, crazy, annoying Andy vs the new wussy Andy. And my god, Erin is a babe and a half....GO FOR IT.

That was my least favorite unresolved plotline. [sad puppet]

At least we got a hint of Andy's old anger-management issues when he was alone in the car.

"STOP TALKING ABOUT THE SUN!" I don't like the way the writers just switched on an asshole gene in Gabe this year, but that line reading was worth it.

I actually found the episode pretty amusing, but none of the 'candidates' were right.

Tate is awful. I'd stop watching.

Yeah, Tate is a choice that holds zero interest for me. Especially when Jim vs Spader actually has a lit of potential. I'd like them to make the boss an out and out villain.

I was confused by this 'Tate' you guys kept referring to.  Just looked up the name.  Yeah, I saw no potential from her for this show.  Were all of these candidates meant for serious consideration for next season?  Didn't seem like it.

Well, that was disappointing...

Catherine Tate is a comedic genius & a ridiculously good actor but ...wow... she does NOT fit in with this show. When she was announced as a possible replacement I was really, really jazzed. Not so much anymore.

Spader was the funniest candidate but where the hell could they go with that character?

I suppose they could gradually break down his 'mind-fuck' confidence as something of a put-on... but SHOULD THEY!?

Whatever they'd do with Spader, it would certainly be a shitload different from what they did with Michael Scott. And that's reason enough alone to pick him.

For those that didn't see them, there were a flurry of news reports that hit on Thursday that dealt with where NBC is in picking a new boss. I'm too lazy to go searching for links but the gist was: Arnett was interested and was the favorite, but the sitcom he was attached to got picked up. That leaves Tate as the new favorite, but she's doing a play in England right now and might have to keep on doing it, which could keep her from joining the show, as well. Spader is the current backup plan to Tate, but apparently he hasn't won over everyone at NBC. (Some people apparently think he's not "warm" enough. Idiots. Of course he's not! That's the point!) All the in-house candidates for the gig (actors already on the show) apparently have supporters at NBC and in the writer's room, but right now, it's not enough to convince any of the higher-ups. But apparently one of them still could get it if things with Tate and Spader break down.

So, basically ... this is nowhere close to being decided.

Five Fingers Carrey would rule.

She really isn't. She is the worst type of catchphrase comedian who has built a career on taking 4 or 5 decent observations combining them with lazy vulgarity and beating them into the ground - and her biggest success is a less grotesque Little Britain rip-off.

Damn, that's what i was afraid of. They have no clue...

I really REALLY would like them to choose Spader, just for the sheer weirdness it would be at first. I think there could be a lot potential there.

And if they go internally, it would have to be Dwight. Andy hasn't been interesting since his storyline with Angela. I like Daryl, but without Michael he has no conflict.....so it'd have to be Dwight....but we've seen that twice now, so it holds no surprise. Besides, I like underling Dwight more than Boss Dwight.

Ill put my money on Jim. He is the sane port in an insane storm. But by the end of season 8 he slowly becomes the new Michael

Interesting, I didn't know Tate was so generally ill-regarded. I mostly know her from her Doctor Who run & I thought she was pretty great there. Oh well...

Tate was great on Doctor Who. Tennent and her had great chemistry together. A good example of that would be when The Doctor was poisoned in the episode with Agatha Christie.

Just when I thought Jenna Fischer couldn't get any more adorable, they have her do those cartoony voices to fake out Creed. So cute.

Out of everyone presented, Spader made the most impact. When you have a character that manages to creep out Dwight, that's someone worth exploring more. As for Tate, I couldn't tell if it was her performance or the material she was given, but I didn't really find her to be funny or interesting.  My vote is for Spader.

Oh, who am I kidding? They are most likely going to have Jim be the manager next year.

Between Fischer, the girls from Community & Parks.., & Tina Fey NBC seems to have cornered the market on smart & adorable women the same way that CBS has cornered the market on vengeance seeking 50-somethings.

Finale seemed to end with a bit of a whimper after the last couple of episodes'  momentum, but pretty amusing.  However, it was completely worth it for the best Ryan face since the early seasons after Gabe's comment about people enjoying touching him.

I actually found that face of his to be cringe-worthy.  It felt like he was trying to be Jim, and it was absolutely unconvincing to me.  Novak is not a standard for quality acting in the show, and this is a perfect example.

Anyway, this article is interesting.

I haven't been a fan of the show in several seasons, and only catch it intermittently. But leading up to Carrell's departure I started tuning back in. I think they did a great job with his departure, and personally I find the show much funnier without him in it. Teh dynamic between the rest of the cast is aces. No love loss for Gabe. He was getting stale. And while she's nice eye-candy, the new secretary can leave as well. Looking forward to seeingwho eventually ends up as Scranton's manager. I really liked Spader's charactaer, but he (and Carrey) seems too big for the show.

I didn't really take it as a Jim face, it seemed like it was more of an involuntary face of uncomfortableness at the thought of Gabe being touched to me.  Earlier in the series it seemed like Ryan was one of the best for hilarious reaction shots, but as soon as he got promoted, his character really got kind of grating.  This face seemed like a return to form.  My roommate and I rewound and watched that face over and over again, cracking up each time.

Looks like Spader is in talks to reprise his role next season.  The Twist?  He'll be replacing Kathy Bates, not Michael!  lol.

I think its pretty brilliant, because I loved Spader's character in the finale.  The idea of him being hired on as a manager, and then thinking "I'm too important for this job" and getting the CEO position is brilliant.  I could really see him doing well in that role.  And his interactions with Dwight will be priceless.

Of course, that still leaves the Manager position open, so I guess that mystery is still up in the air.

As I read it, Spader becomes the manager, than angles for the Kathy Bates job, leaving the door open for Catherine Tate. In other words, it will continue being a musical chairs-type thing.

Fingers crossed for Harvey Keitel.

Damn, I was hoping to write the whole show off, but now I'm actively curious.

Awesome!  I was rooting for him.  :-)

According to NBC, he will be made manager for the summer (the part we don't see) and quickly climbs the Sabre corporate ladder and takes over Kathy Bates job as CEO in a matter of days.

I still think we will get mulitple managers in the next season, but it's cool to know that Mr California will be a semi-permanent addition next year.
