Have at.

I haven't seen Henry & June in 15+ years. Maybe that's due for a revisit. Certainly a curveball number one pick. Goodfellas is like Jordan slipping past Sam Bowie.
Goodfellas I expected to go in the first. The other two, not so much. Interesting start.
Goodfellas in the first slot was a sure thing. Thought it was going to go 1# though.
A make up for Kaufman's THE RIGHT STUFF sliding so far down. Ha.

I'm kind of bored of GOODFELLAS; I'd personally put two 1990 gangster movies above it right now.
Eyes Wide Shut going third. Not what I expected at all.

Its one of the most important and influential films of the decade and possibly Scorsese's masterpiece. It belongs where it is and is a no-brainer.

I can't imagine being bored of a film that incredible, exciting, well-written, well shot and brilliantly edited. As such, I look forward to your picks, sir.
Poor Henry Hill. I thought maybe he had a chance.

It may have lasted longer*, but based on quality, EYES WIDE SHUT is right where it should be.

*though likely not past my first pick dependent on how other things fell.

I can't get through EWS anymore. I've tried twice in the last year and, while its far from a write-off, its a real slog.

My experience with EWS is that I went to a Chicago theater to watch it when the theater got hit with a blackout right when Cruise is told to take his clothes off at the orgy. The theater shut down, we got free passes to come back . . . and I never bothered to see the rest of the film. Just didn't grab me.
I thought I had a chance (sniff)...

Don't worry everybody, I'm not gonna go on a kids movie rampage like I did after I lost 2001.
Oh, Matchstick, you motherfucker!
I knew I had no chance of getting GoodFellas, and yet still I feel the sting.
Diva could have sat on Henry & June til round 5. History hasn't revered it a whole bunch (though as a burgeoning Henry Miller fan at the time I was jazzed for it).
It was foolish of me to expect Miller's to make it to the second day...

Yeah, I wouldn't call it a bad pick by any stretch -- if you like a film enough to take it in the first round, go for it -- but I think Henry and June could have definitely been had later.

I know. It's one of those movies whose stock rises with every passing year.

I think I tried to masturbate to HENRY & JUNE back in high school. Don't recall how that turned out. Nor the film.
Eyes Wide Shut at three getting more heat than Henry & June going number one? Curious. Although maybe that's just cuz some haven't seen Henry & June. Anyway, I knew EWS wasn't getting to the fourth day, and it fits my theme. Plus, it's just a great film. That it leaves you cold is intentional. It can be wry, chilling, trippy, and even clinical. But it ain't erotic.

Totally. Its still the Coens' best in my book. I watch it every year and it just gets better and better. You wanna talk about a perfect film? Miller's Crossing.

Line of round one to Kirby.
With all of the first group gone, does the second group still wait 'til 11?

EDIT: Guess not, since Judas went.
Two Coen brothers movies picked, and I'd wager a third, before the best one gets taken.

Its not that it leaves you cold that gets me. Its that its not actually very interesting or relevant any more and Kidman - who at the time I thought was quite good in it - is actually pretty awful in some scenes.

How is it not relevant?
Fargo, Leon, Saving Private Ryan. That's a stretch of films I certainly don't mind getting nabbed.
Both Kidman and Cruise are great in it. Don't get that shot.

It just doesn't seem to say much to me any more.

Don't get me wrong, I'll defend it going in the first round with the best of them. If nothing else, Kubrick slightly off form is still pretty great and you could write essays about the film's development and performance, both as a Kubrick film and as an adult drama of its sort being released when it was. I just don't personally dig it much as a film anymore.

That line is a half-truth since I have since seen H&J. It's actually an interesting counterpoint to EWS as there's similar situations going on in each but one film very much wants to be erotic (and is) and one certainly does not (and ain't).
It was Ryan and GoodFellas fighting it out for my top spot, so sort of glad to have the decision taken away from me.
SPR, Leon, Fargo - all great picks in my book.
For me, it was between 'Leon' and another film for my top spot. A conversation with another poster/friend convinced me that the other one would make it until Thursday for me...we'll see how it goes.
Ugh, stuck at the airport due to rain delays. In any case, my strategy this draft is based on films I dig that more people need to see. Could have snagged a lot of heavy hitters, but I'm not going the obvious route this time. Props to Matchstick with snagging Millers.
Nice pick, Henry. A masterpiece and no mistake.
JFK was my pick if SPR didn't make it to me.
Now you wanna talk about terrible acting... Costner in JFK. I tried watching it last year and couldn't get through it.
Seriously. JFK and SPR would never be anywhere near my lists. I have no need to see either again.
Costner was JFK's weakest link. But, it's an amazing film on the technical side.

Plus, John Candy's performance. That shit made me crack up when I was 10 and it makes me smile now.

"Saving Private Ryan" was a Sgt. Rock comic directed by a Capra disciple.
Nicely played, Rath.
At work, will expand on my JFK selection later. It's purely a director-driven selection, agree on Costner's acting.

Was neck and neck with another film not yet chosen...very difficult choice.
You can beef about Costner's accent, but there's no way a bad actor carries that summation scene in the courtroom the way Costner does.
JFK was on my list for day 2 or 3. The editing is simply superb.

SPR just wasn't on my radar at all .

What can I say? I went back, and then I left.

I was ready for this. I was almost annoyed to be in the first slot, because it meant that instead of the less revered awesome first pick I had all planned out, I kind of had to make a play at Goodfellas. It's my go to pick for favorite movie, I watched it like three weeks ago, and it was just as good as ever, and the 20 year anniversary and the Vanity Fair piece and on & on...It was out of my hands. Plus,

All that. Sorry henry hill, I was aware you were next and I did it anyway. That's just the kind of guy I am.

Fargo is a great pick too this early.

I enjoyed JFK for a good while. I think the younger me appreciated conspiracies and how the government is total bullshit.

I did watch my DVD one last time a couple years back and then donated it to the library because I felt the film was no longer essential.
Goodfellas needed to go in the first group. That we're all a little worn out on it is a testament to its greatness. I've never seen another movie more.
And there goes Fargo.
JFK is a worthy pick. Very well done. Very 90's.
What the fuck is Chungking Express? Did you make that up, Rath?

I tried to masturbate to Eyes Wide Shut and my penis gave me a frown face.
Chungking could've been snuck in during the 2nd or 3rd round. It's a great movie, but a little early to bow it out.
Jesus fucking christ, Patrick. Get out of my head.
