Agreed. Killer first round steal.

Really?
I had to, it's on my top ten of all time, and it had first priority if it was available. Rarely is a comedy so perfectly crafted top-to-bottom that you can say it's a perfect film. The best thing is that the central conceit is NEVER explained, there's nobody explaining what the hell is going on. It just....is.
You'll have to elaborate, sir. That film is near perfect, and does way more with that concept than it really deserved.

EDIT: ^What that dude said.
My only issue with the film is with Andie McDowell. She's gorgeous but she's an absolute void of talent. The movie would be improved 100% with pretty much ANY other actress in the role.
Ouch.
Andie Macdowell = perfection dodged

Eta: judas and the words outta my mouth
whew! Only three of my list taken so far, and none of them ones I really expected to get. That will probably change.
Comedy is subjective.

Ramis is an underrated director who shoots better than most of the comedy hacks currently working. The supporting cast in the film was strong for the time, but amazing today.

Bill Murray rises above the script.

But, first round? I'm just not seeing it.
What's wrong with the script?

Hence "near perfect". This is my gripe as well.
Its testament to how good the film around her is that even Andie "Black Hole" McDowell can't sink that film. Its about as good a comedy as you could find in the 90s and up there with the best of all time.

Yep, no problem with that going in the first.
If anything, Murray rises to the script.
I'm not surprised SPR went so early, but my opinion on that film has totally soured over the years. It's still technically brilliant(and influential) and the cast is great all-around, but oh god that script is horrid.

Miller's Crossing really hurts. It really does get better every time you watch it.
It's more than the humor, to me. I love Groundhog Day for the same reason I love Ikiru, and (movie not yet drafted). It never fails to improve my mood, and it succeeds in being inspirational. This is kind of an ideological position, but I tend to give an extra few points to films with a humanist message.
Man, I really need to give Miller's Crossing a rewatch. The first time I watched it, I was mystified by the plot for some reason, so I got confused, and it soured the whole thing for me. I kept feeling I missed something important.

Really? When you get past the temporal plot point...is there anything about the material that screams excellence?
Groundhog is such a weird flick. I realize there is pretty much universal love for Murray but take him out of the equation for a moment. On paper there is nothing about this that should create a first round pick movie for one of the greatest movie decades of all time. Yet what should be a tired trite formulaic comedy works so well and really is the centerpiece of Murray's comedic career.

I do agree that with a real female comedic force instead of McDowell this would get more all time great talk than it does.
'Ed Wood' hurts. Off the list it goes...
Groundhog Day is definitely a first rounder, no question.
Ah see Pulp and Ed these were the kind of films I expected to be gone by the time I got on here today. Fuck you both sirs..
Evil Twin is starting to step a little too close to me.
I'm surprised Pulp Fiction lasted even this long. Can't begrudge anyone for taking it quickly.

ETA: Well crap. I missed seeing Ed Wood taken. Well played, good sir.
Wish I'd joined. Good stuff folks.

It's not a science-fiction film. The point isn't temporal but existential. He can only advance in life when he achieves complete selflessness.
wow, how did it take this long for Pulp Fiction to go? Seems like a lot of the big guns are still to come. Hoping this means my picks are safe. *wishful thinking*
post #127 of 3285
Hell, I'm kinda shocked we had to blow through more than 10 people before Pulp Fiction dropped.

EDIT: What everyone on the planet said, apparently.
Groundhog Day is, while not a film I feel passionately about, undeniably a classic of the era. It's that decade's It's A Wonderful Life. And Buddhists love it.
I agree with Cellophane..I guess some could argue that pulp became such an over played icon of a generation that there could be a backlash against it but to me that is all bullshit. I have no problem saying it's one of the most important and influential movies of it's time.

I've got a hunch that Kirby would let you in on the action, Nick.

also, what's your new avatar from?

Dang it, Rath. Your list in the lists thread made me laugh. I'm probably the only one who understands it. Kudos to the inclusion of Charley.

Some of the finest firecracker dialogue you'll ever hear. Gorgeous cinematography. A pitch-perfect cast delivering pitch-perfect performances. A bloody, period gangster film.

Yeah, its pretty special.

This is completely inarguable. I see 2 schools of independent film in the 90s, one led by Pulp Fiction, the other by a yet-to-be-claimed masterpiece. Pulp Fiction influenced film far more than any film of the early 90s, backlash be damned.

It's an existential film that comes across as watered down Serling. But, by stepping close to Serling styled material...it becomes distantly Sci-Fi. Step away from that genre's trappings for a moment and focus on the film.

What happens in that film as it functions as a human drama. What makes it excel?

Return of the Living Dead, looks like.

It's the Tarman from "Return of the Living Dead". Big fan of the flick, even if they nuked Louisville at the end of it.

THIS close to Pulp Fiction lasting till tomorrow. Dang.

Certainly a spot for Nick if he wants it. Just join the last group that goes tomorrow.
1994 dominating over 1999 early. Pulp Fiction is one of those films that's easy to see the greatness of and miss how great it actually is. If that makes sense.
Wasn't expecting Babe in the least. Great film for all ages, but wasn't even close to my radar.
okay. That's....an interesting pick. huh.
I'm in the camp that Groundhog Day is a no doubt first rounder. Forget trying to point to parts, the whole exceeds everything.

Henry & June is the only one that really seems a reach. But, heck, if you love it, you love it.

Goodfellas, Miller's Crossing, Unforgiven, Fargo, & Pulp Fiction were all films I knew would go early.

Awesome. Pop me in!

Babe is more of a first-rounder than Groundhog's Day.

Yeah. What's scaring me is how many great films I love seem to be lasting until tomorrow. I don't want to speak too early, but I may be facing a dilemma I never expected: To have to choose between some of my first round choices.

Yeah, PULP was so overrated that it's become underrated.
Babe really seems like a middle of the draft pick to me as has been said great family film but does not scream cream of the crop to me personally.
Yeah some really off the wall first-rounders, but hey that's why I love this place.

I can agree with this. GD has always seemed overrated to me. Murray is on fire and it's got a neat concept/execution, but that's about it for me.
You guys are crazy. Babe is a masterpiece. Seriously.

Also, the next two days are going to HURT.
