90's Draft: Commentary - Page 7

I still have Malkovich on HD DVD waiting to be watched. I may need to do something about that tonight.
I haven't seen Dark City for so long I've basically forgotten it. Should I queue up the original or the director's cut?
Director's Cut. The original has its problems. The DC fixes every single one.
Yeah, the DC of DC is the way to go.

and YES, Justin...that was on my list as well. We are definitely drawing water from the same well, my friend.
What I love about this draft is I get to update my Netflix with stuff I missed. Never seen Naked so it goes up.

Loved Dark City. Was hoping it would slip a bit to a later round but I should have known better.

2 away from my group. Might get to pick before I leave. Didn't think I'd have such tough choices.
Well I guess I need to see Naked.
I only saw the theatrical (of Dark City)... isn't that the cut being drafted?
Yeah, it has to be.
just got on and have to say fuck all you assholes today
post #310 of 3285
Sideline question: Which of my fellow drafters in my round would be so nice and draft for me tomorrow? I´d PM a list of three choices after everything is said and done today since I have to attend a conference tomorrow and won´t be able to draft on time. Cheers!

Let's wait till it's draft, then axplain that one to me, because one of all flash, and then other is all velvet. Mind you, I love both, and the other was on my list. But it owes so much to Dark City.

Crow is right, but for me Dark City is an hommage to pre-50's movie craft. German Expressionism mixed with a noir detective story and Nosferatu-like villains. And yeah, it's the theatrical. Haven't seen the DC.

And Jan, I'll do it.
Martin and I have a cooperative theme: MOVIES THAT JUSTIN WANTS TO DRAFT.
FUCK YEAH.

He's gonna be crying by round 3.

Seriously, most people will be puzzled by my round 3-5 picks. Most won't have seen them.
Also, I just realized the first album I have in my List thread, not on purpose, is the goddamn Downward Spiral. And I didn't take Dark City.

FFFFF
I expected BJM and or Dark City would survive till I picked

Great! Will PM you later tonight. Since you are hellbent on destroying Justins draft my choices might be save from your claws this time! Thanks, mate.

Get ready for 'Turkish Dark City', everyone.
What is Naked? I'll have to track it down.

Cool. Send me 3 picks. I'll send you 3 of mine so you can see where I'm going.
Have not seen Naked & Wild at Heart
However everything else is a great first round pick.
BJM had the bad luck of coming out in 99 with all those other heavyweights but it is such an amazing flick.
Fight Club was to be my first pick after Pulp went down. I know there is some back lash but to me it is such an amazing film.

This is a pretty good description to whet your appetite:

I have to admit to the fact that I HATE 'Wild at Heart'. Cage is in GOOFYland and Laura Dern is just plain-old terrible in it. I liked Willem Dafoe's part but that's about it.
Leigh's Naked is the gem picks so far today. Such a riveting movie about some really despicable people. If all you know of Thewlis is kindly Prof. Lupin from Harry Potter, you're in for a treat. Maybe.
Wild at Heart is a movie I just remember being very weirded out by at an age I was probably too young to appreciate it.

I'm kind of the opposite. I loved it when it came out at the height of Peaks mania. I have since cooled on it considerably. Except for Laura Dern's tits. Those still hold up.
Man, I gotta rewatch Naked. Thewlis was fantastic.
Wild At Heart is Lynch having fun, in my opinion. Its accessible enough that it did pretty well and bizarre enough that it sits nicely in the middle of his body of work. There are better films of his from this period, but I can understand why someone would love it.
The weird thing about Wild At Heart for me personally is that this is th movie that intodruced me to the Wizard of Oz. Never really acknowledged the existence of neither th book nor the the movie before. Which alone makes this movie worthy remembering for me.

Well, I think there's really only one despicable person in the movie. And it's part of the film's brilliance that he's part of the narrative because he's there to show you -- by contrast --- that the rest of them, specifically Johnny, are not truly despicable. They're just fucked up, damaged, and tend to make a mess of things as they struggle for some sort of comfort in the world.

Nice picks this morning.

Being John Malkovich is the only movie in which I can stand Cameron Diaz.

I think she's pretty ace in Vanilla Sky, for what its worth, but I take your point.
I had certainly experienced Lynch before Wild At Heart. But I still felt like I had just been punched in the balls after watching it. I have a love/hate relationship with it. Many parts really get under my skin and upset me, but I can't deny how good it is.

Aside- i was 19 when I saw this in a packed house opening weekend. Everyone there loved it, laughed, etc. Maybe part of the reason this made my draft is because I felt like I was really a part of some kind of subculture sitting there. I was kind of impressed that so many people were collectively enjoying such a weird, unconventional film.

Vanilla Sky is fucking garbage.
Does that automatically mean that all the performances are too? Come on.
Cameron Diaz has a great ass, that's it. She's incapable of evincing any sort of dramatic credibility and she lacks any sense of comedic timing. Any actress (save for Andie MacDowell) could do a better job than her.

In Vanilla Sky I don't mind her, but I still wish another actress would have taken the part.

LEt me amend my first statement: Being John Malkovich is the only film in which I actually enjoy Cameron Diaz' work and don't wish another actress were playing that part.

No no, but she's really not a good actress.
Malkovich was also the first foray into film for Kauffman and Jonze. And they came out swinging.
How can you not celebrate that?

Also, Cusack and Malkovich themselves are amazing in it.

BOOGIE NIGHTS was high on my list.
It certainly is Cusack at his best. Malkovich plays Malkovich like he was born for the role.
Did Malkovich made something as good after BJM?
Boogie Nights is such an audacious sophomore film. And it's good. It's very very good.

So is Keener.
Catherine Keener really does deliver in spades in BJM.
I rewatched Burn After Reading last night. Shit was incredible. Malkovich was truly on fire on that one. But it's Pitt's idiocy and Clooney's energy that get me.

Ha yeah. Completely forgot. Still, he really made shitty movies afterward. Kinda like Kingsley and Sexy Beast.

So are we going to pick soon or can I fit in a run first?
