90's Draft: Commentary - Page 66

My personal favorite Kevin Kline movie from the 90's is I Love You To Death. Such a fun little movie. I wasn't overly impressed with Dave, but then again I haven't seen it since it came out on home video.
An American President was pretty good too.
DAVE should have gone as well.

All of these shoulds are really coulds. I think the majority of quality films that are genuinely beloved 90's film were drafted. The rest of these are good films that more people should see. That's not a slam against them, but it seems like we're just listing films to list them now.

One last coulda: The Daytrippers.

I hear you.

I mean, maybe I shouldn't talk - since I drafted Ghost, right? - but it is kind of getting to the point where, any minute now, someone is going to go: Shit! How could you not draft The Cutting Edge? Or... I can't believe we forgot COOL RUNNINGS!

Hey... Was Dutch in anyone's sights?

...

Just goofing. I do agree that, overall, this is a high-quality draft with very few weak picks and only a handful of really great films left out.
Yeah, the last few pages have been peppered with variations of "Man, I can't believe no one drafted that middling film no one feels strongly about!"

My problem with As Good As It Gets is that the romantic relationship between Nicholson and Hunt doesn't feel half as believable as the one between Nicholson and Kinnear they didn't have the nerve to go after. I felt much more of a connection between those two characters than the ones we're supposed to feel it for.
Did we mention In and Out? Because that's a fun movie that is also middling!

I know I was tooting the horn for Spike Lee, but from Do The Right Thing to Get on the Bus, that's a phenomenal run that is near-unmatched in recent history.

Do you think Jungle Fever and Mo' Better Blues are real and enduring achievements? The filter of time seems to be leaving them behind.
I really liked Jungle Fever when I saw it in college. I thought there were some great performances in it, and some interesting ideas Lee was playing with, even though I didn't agree. Jungle Fever has a problematic ending, though.

Understatement of the year. But, in my eyes, Samuel L. Jackson's performance redeems that fucking wacky ending. Anyone who can shimmy to his death without breaking the emotion of the scene is an incredible actor. As Dre once said, the performance is so good Cannes had to invent an award for him.

Still prefer Mo Better Blues, but it's not a huge achievement like Do the Right Thing, or 25th Hour. His crowning achievements are sadly right on either ends of the decade.

But I think Girl 6 and Summer of Sam would be the only movies he did in the 90's weren't better than Ghost.
I actually really like Summer of Sam. Talking dog and all.
I think Summer Of Sam has tons of ambition and gumption. And it has that amazing sequence scored to Baba O'Riley.

But the whole movie can pretty much be summed up with that funny sex scene between John Leguizamo and Mira Sorvino. ... Unsatisfying.

Spike Lee didn't really have a clear handle on these characters. They don't feel real and you can never really connect with anyone. Ultimately, I was more engaged by the investigative aspects of the film. But, since that's not really what the movie is interested in, it lost me.

It's definitely an interesting faliure though.

Warner Bros had an interesting run where they got some high-end filmmakers to make classy adaptations of classic kids' books: Agnieszka Holland's THE SECRET GARDEN ('93), Caroline Thompson's BLACK BEAUTY ('94) and Alfonso Cuaron's A LITTLE PRINCESS ('95).

Don't forget Nicolas Roeg's The Witches in 1990.

Oh, man, I can't believe I forgot this one, but it's a really low-key movie that could easily escape the attention of most folks: NOBODY'S FOOL (1995, dir. Robert Benton), starring Paul Newman, Jessica Tandy, Melanie Griffith and Bruce Willis. (Also, a very young Philip Seymour Hoffman!)

If you haven't seen this, try to track it down - a very sweet character study with a tremendous performance by Newman.

And if we've reached the stage where we're saying 'Oh, such-and-such wasn't all that bad', then I think CAN'T HARDLY WAIT had some fun stuff going on. mainly the scenes with Seth Green and Lauren Ambrose. And it did have a pretty sweet line-up of supporting actors and cameos.

I sort of hate to admit it, but that particular teen flick has stuck with me more than I'd have expected. I think I mostly caught it due to the fact that Ethan Embry played the un-named bass player in That Thing You Do, but I really enjoyed it. You're right...the Seth and Lauren stuff was a highlight of that movie.

Hey, what about MIAMI BLUES?
Kirby picked it.

I agree wholeheartedly. A special little film. Newman is very funny, and it's a kick watching him play essentially a doofus.

On my extended list. Not a Top Fiver, but a gem. And maybe the last great Newman performance?

Road to Perdition says otherwise.

You don't think he gave a great performance in Nobody's Fool?

Edit: Never mind, I'm an idiot who can't tell time. But let's say it's his last great LEADING MAN performance.

I just wanna say that, after being reminded of it in the Movie Stuff I Just Realised thread, I totally would have supported Hudson Hawk as a bonus pick.
Shit, did anyone draft Hated? Would have fit into either my or Tati's theme.
Yes, Robert De Niro has made some crap comedies but ANALYZE THIS ain't one of them.
The talk of Kevin Kline films reminds me of a film he has a part in that never gets mentioned even with a great RDJ performance, Chaplin.
Good performance, weak film. And Kline is nothing like the real Fairbanks in it. But judged on the merits of Moira Kelly's breasts it's a masterpiece.

Rewatched Dark City thanks to this thread. Now I know why I don't remember any of it from years ago. It's a boring slog to nowhere. 5th Element 4ever.
