Peter Jackson threatens to move The Hobbit to Eastern Europe thanks to union scandal

Aside from the Shire and Rivendell though, The Hobbit takes us places LOTR didn't go: Mirkwood and Lake Town and the Lonely Mountain. So a change in shooting location wouldn't be that big a deal to me.

Argh. Just shoot the motherfucker already!

Sad to see that the senseless infighting between the Kiwis and the Aussies is now imperiling the HOBBIT. I do support unions in general and don't like the idea of Jackson trying to duck minimum wage obligations while blaming opposition to that move on Australia, but I don't know enough about the particulars of this situation to pass judgment

With that said, New Zealand IS Middle Earth, and I'd imagine the Jackson knows that. He'd also be reviled in his own country if he tried to steal the Hobbit away from them.

I'd hope it's just an aggressive negotiating technique to suggest it could be filmed elsewhere. Not only would the fans flip the heck out, but the locations wouldn't match, much less look remotely the same. There is a variety of terrain to be found in Eastern Europe, but nothing I've seen looks all that similar to the New Zealand landscape

Yell that in a Mexican accent and you've got Guillermo's reaction.

Can't wait to see how they make Prague look like Mirkwood.

I hope they can shoot this thing before Ian McKellan gets to 100.

If this film ever gets made (and made the "right" way with McKellan, Jackson, etc. all on board), I can't think of anything else that went from one of the biggest no-brainers to one of the biggest "holy shit thank god they finally did it!" productions ever. Aside from the first LOTR films, of course.

Ok, I get it, I get it!
It won't get done, ever.
I get it.
Happy?

I'm probably one of the biggest LOTR fanboys here but at this point the decent thing for everyone is to just let it rest. Try again in a year or ten. I'm also OK with never.

And as for Jackson? Please PJ, drop this whole respectability thing and gimme some more gore. Please? You know you'll love it.

At this point I'm not sure I want it anymore. There's too much that can, or has, gone wrong, and it's always going to be compared to LotR, for better or worse. That might seem blasphemous, but oh well. And there's still the 2 movie issue. The Hobbit doesn't need bloat.

Hindsight is 20/20 and all that, but it's a damn shame they didn't make the Hobbit as a warm-up for LotR.

*edit- and Stelios said some of what I said while I was writing.

Anyone thinking nowhere else on earth can look like Middle Earth, do a google image search for "high tatras". It's where they filmed Wolfhound, if anyone saw it, and with a decent budget it could look stunning.

If this keeps going on like it has been, they might as well just kill the fucker dead and forget about it.
