On my first listen through now. Thoughts when I get through it.

You beat me to posting this by like half an hour. I'll post when I've heard the entire album.

I'm gonna save the 25 minute(!) closer for some other time, but I can say this thing is no disappointment. Extremely dense and complex stuff that obviously needs repeat listens. But even on first go around a lot of this stuff is so obviously inventive and gorgeous I was wanting to stick each track on again as soon as they ended.

It's good, but a bit samey and probably a little too long. But the parts that I like I REALLY like. Favorites are Too Much, I Walked, I Want to be Well, and Impossible Soul. The auto-tune section in the middle of Impossible Soul is a little silly but I love the track overall.

Another great album by Sufjan Stevens. So fucking excited to see him in concert in november!

In a word: overwhelming. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, it's just incredibly dense and it's going to take some time to really sink my teeth into this incredibly meaty audible feast. Towards the end, sounds started to blur in my head (I was pretty tired and it was late) but the first few songs definitely left me with a positive impression. I'm looking forward to repeated listens. And I'm also excited because Illinois left me with the same feeling on first listen (although I think it was just a little bit more accessible).

So the album is named not after the world of advertising, but after a stone-age cutting tool? Weird. (This is the first time I've seen the title in print)

I think it's actually pronounced similarly to "odds."

If you want to legally download the album right now, you can get it from Sufjan's website if you preorder his CD/LP:

It's just amazing how much Sufjan has evolved from album to album. After listening mainly to his "Illinois" and "Avalance" albums on my iPod for the past couple of years, I ripped his first two albums and have been listening to them for the past couple of weeks in anticipation of "The Age of Adz." Going from listening to them directly to "Adz" is just mind-blowing.

If you listened to his track on Dark Was the Night it all makes perfect sense.

Let's not forget that he did an entire album of experimental electronic music back in 2001. Enjoy Your Rabbit. There's also the all orchestral The BQE from last year. So, sonically speaking, this isn't unprecedented. He's taken his main songwriting approach and fused it with those two stylistic digressions to form a single unified whole.
