So, Johnny Depp in Redface?
Isn't he part Cherokee or some such? It's not much, but it's not like he's Jake Gyllenhaal

I hope this is not the case. Depp is one of the huge stars now. I keep really hoping he transitions his star power into interesting projects again not just being Mr. hollywood star. On the bright side it's not a Tim Burton movie.

Johnny Depp needs to be careful. He's getting real close to Nicolas Cage territory, here. Looking at what he has lined up, it's 95% blockbuster fare.

He's been talking about playing Tonto for years, hasn't he? could be cool. WTF else you gonna do with Lone Ranger?

I am not at all excited about the idea of seeing the American West Bruckheimerized, and as much as it pains me to say it, I'm not that bowled over these days whenever I see Depp's name attached to a new project. He went to the Burton well one too many times, and frankly I'm kind of sick of the guy at this point. (and I haven't even seen AIWL)

I feel like I already had my rollicking western adventure with Martin Campbell's superb THE MASK OF ZORRO, and I'm not at all in the mood for a film that treats the west with the same "respect" that the POTC films treated 19th century naval adventuring.

I don't mind Depp doing "blockbusters" He makes them better and if he can do something as great as his Captain Jack again it would be worth while.

Wasn't the conceit of the film that Tonto is the real brains of the duo, a la Without A Clue? I hope so, otherwise you've got a real lopsided film unless they cast another A-lister as Ranger.

The Pirates of the Caribbean is not about making a respectful film about 19th century naval people... it is about a good old fashioned fun fantasy/adventure movie set in that era. I would dig the concept of a fantasy/adventure film set in the wild west. For your respectful westerns go ahead and watch True Grit, that does not seem like what they are even trying to make here.

Depp as Tonto has always seemed weird, but it's probably the only reason this movie is still floating around out there.

That's all well and good, but I just did not like the film. In fact, it remains the only movie I've ever walked on when seeing it in a theater. The series just doesn't understand what is interesting about that era, and it requires you to submit to some remarkably stupid ideas in order to get through the running time (like the notion that piracy = freedom and liberty, instead of scurvy and criminal violence). In that way it's like 300, which inserted a bunch of incongruous monologues about freedom into the mouths of the Spartans. It tried to pretend that when Greeks spoke of "freedom" they were talking about the modern American understanding of the word.

Anyway, to each their own, we can agree to disagree

I think you meant to say "The series just doesn't understand what I THINK is interesting about that era"

It is fine if POTC was not your cup of tea, but I loved it and so did about a bajillion other people so perhaps they had the right idea, it just didn't suck you in.

So yes, agree to disagree.

Fair enough, I'd actually originally typed "I think" but then decided to delete it. Anyway, yes, they are popular no doubt, but then again TRANSFORMERS 2 made lots of cash too.

Anyway, agree to disagree.

PS I'll admit that Depp's performance was fun (before it wore out it's welcome in interminable sequels)

I'm pretty sure someone pulled this story from a time capsule, as I recall Verbinski also being in talks for this long ago.

Am I the only person who's beginning to miss the Johnny Depp that used to be as interesting and unpredictable in his choices as he was entertaining?
I thought George Clooney was already on the record as saying he's taking the title role, back when this first surfaced a couple of years back.

You mean the Johnny Depp who's got SHANTARAM, THE RUM DIARY and THE TOURIST all on his slate in the next eighteen months?

touché.

I mean, I agree with you somewhat - he could definitely cut back on the whole "saying yes to anything Tim Burton suggests" thing. But I think his heart's still in the right place. He'd have been doing DON QUIXOTE again if it hadn't clashed with previously-agreed work, for example.
