3D HBO COMING. AND INCEPTION 3D?

While 3D Inception would be nifty as hell, a post conversion happen kinda saddens me.

On the other hand, if they want to give that once over to Speed Racer.....

Are you insane? Speed Racer post converted would be a nightmare.

Speed Racer perhaps one of the only films that I'd ever accept a post converted version of. The way the film was artificially flattened* to resemble an anime, with different planes of movement sliding against one another, would allow the film to look just fine with the "pop up book" effect one gets from Post Conversion. Since most of the car stuff is entirely CGI, you could simply render new images to make it 3D without having to post convert anything

PS 3D HBO sounds utterly amazing. It's not "TV" indeed! I love the steady trickle of such developments.. it makes the labeling of 3D as a cyclical "fad" all the more laughable. Has a 3D tv network ever happened before? Networks don't invest in that stuff unless they know that soon there will be a bunch of 3D TVs on the market

*much like the process used to shoot a normal 2D movie, zing!

3D HBO is the next step in the slow move 3D is making as an accepted form of media viewing.

It is stuff like this and ESPN3D that makes me so sure 3D isn't just "some fad" that will go away. It starts here and ends with glasses free 3D and excellent post conversions in about 50 years, but hey it should still all happen in my lifetime!

I think SPEED RACER is the only film I've ever seen that I was upset wasn't in 3D.

Maybe, but True 3D.
Not shitty post conversion. The editing and the speed of the camera would kill it.

Delighted to see a fellow Revolutionary on the boards! Personally? I expect total 3D media conversion* within the next 25 years. We're much closer to that point than people realize. Cameron says we're going to be glasses free within 5-7 years in the theater. I mean, honestly, the idea that the future of entertainment will be less immersive than the current tech allows for (IE, 2D and not 3D) is simply laughable. We're moving towards a Neuromancer future, and the cries of 'fad!' can't change that reality

*as in, nothing will be in 2D outside of faux "period" pieces that are in 2D in order to add to the illusion that they are "found footage". Even that won't be around forever, as 3D capable cellphone and camcorders can't be far off

But isn't the massively computer built nature of Speed Racer a benefit to the post conversion process?

Post Conversion isn't inherently evil, it can be done well, look at the Pixar animated 3D films and the Harry Potter 3D elements of the last 3 movies.

Not so sure.. IMHO "post conversion" is in almost every instance counter revolutionary. Outside of a film like SPEED RACER (where even the non cgi elements were artifically squashed as to make foreground and background in equal focus), you're creating a pop up book, not a truly 3D Image. The Pixar films work because they're just rendering a new image for the right eye. It's as if they were going back to their digital "set" in 1995 and reshooting TOY STORY with a fusion cam. You can't do that with a live action film

It's essential to capture onset data from multiple angles. Anything less is not 3D
