No Ordinary Family on ABC

I think this already has a leg up on Heroes. The fight between Chiklis and the teleporter was a neat surprise. It's got potential. But it's gonna get clobbered by Glee.

So it's good? The ad campaign made it look like a lame Incredibles knock-off.

I wouldn't go so far as to say good. It's got the usual clunky family/teen stuff, but with the set-up out of the way, it's hinting at some interesting directions it could go. And it has a sense of fun about having super powers that the overly-serious Heroes never seemed to grasp.

Doesn't have a season pass from me yet but I can definitely see potential. Best of the new shows (so far).
Not bad. And I dare say it had better superpower action than like half the run of Smallville.
pretty bad imo … seems to steal WAY too much from incredibles and the like … they even seem to live in a similarly retro home as the incredibles…. plus father past his prime loves his powers, oveworked wife, selfconscious daughter … the list goes on.

... But more importantly, am I the only one who noticed that tate donovan was the pilot?

I guess that means the pilot DIDNT die, and will be back in the future.

well i was right that it was him ... was he credited? Obviously the intention wasnt to hide his face in the shadows for five lines, and then have him leave the show for good.

And either way it says it would like to bring those two back for guest stars ... which would make perfect sense for donovans potential part.

Yeah, it owes a lot to The Incredibles (and by association the Fantastic Four), but the dynamic is different enough that I'll give it another go next week. Plus Chiklis seems to be having a lot of fun with it, and it's nice to see him doing something so different from The Shield.

Black leather jacket Chiklis stopping the car and totally manhandling that bad guy was like the gamma-enhanced Vic Mackey scene I've always dreamed of.

This show is not really my cuppa but I do hope it's a success, mostly for Chiklis. He has proven himself many times over as a true great, he deserves something secure and steady and networky.
It's super-powered people, so I'll keep watching. Sometimes I regret that, and sometimes I don't. So far, so good with this one though.
I watched this thinking, "This is the happiest I've ever seen Julie Benz look in anything beyond her small part in As Good As It Gets!"

I enjoyed Chiklis in this, but not much more. I dislike the kids. ESPECIALLY Young Kirk! I hate his face. The abuse he goes through in ORPHAN is a huge part of why I love that movie.

I also wonder how well the kids' powers are going to play, seeing as how they're nowhere near as visual as the parents' powers.
The boy's got science vision. That's visual. The girl's is an audio thing. Neither are that hard to do on TV.

John Nash-vision!

And people loved What Women Want!

So, does the daughter need to look into someone's eyes in order to hear their thoughts? That's not necessarily true. She was overwhelmed with people's thoughts during her basketball game. I wonder if the show will have the powers go in and out in order to milk some cheap tension.

Sorry, I meant "play" as in "be interesting," not as in "be shown". It's gonna be hard going from "So I leaped over three buildings, stopped a bullet and threw the guy into a dumpster" to "Tina's thinking bad things about me!"

Amadeus Cho vision. It'll be interesting if he can use his powers to do stuff physically.

She might need it to focus on a particular person. At least until she matures and the power develops fully.

Hey, do you think it's a metaphor for puberty?

He'll soon be able to nurture his powers to make those numbers pop out for real and wield them as weapons! Multiplication sign SHURIKEN!!!

Amadeus Cho isn't Japanese. Stop being racist to Asians.

I saw the pilot for this a few weeks back and really liked the potential. It was clunky but there were some good pieces there. I'm not thrilled with the powers thus far but it has me for the season, when the criminal had powers that really put me over the top for interest. Hopefully they kill the therapy angle.

Since both ABC and Marvel are owned by Disney, I don't understand why they won't just use a Marvel superhero(s) for their show, instead of creating a new one that seemed like a knock-off of The Incredibles (mom, dad, older daughter & younger son).

Forgot about Jack-Jack, but yeah, I'm sure the baby will show up eventually.

It's not bad at all so far. I love Chiklis and Benz so i'm hoping this survives the initial "cliched premise" phase and works more into the meat of the storyline. Interesting that we have a villain already...
The pilot episode made me sad. I really like Chiklis and Benz (and the adorable Autumn Reeser as Benz's sidekick), but the show felt like something I could watch one episode of and feel like I'd seen them all. Nothing happened in the pilot that made me care a bit about whether I saw episode two. Even the family's internal conflicts were wrapped up pretty neatly (or were so milquetoast to begin with that they didn't matter).

That's where network TV is these days; executives respond to losing viewers to serialized shows on cable by... stripping as many serial elements from their shows as possible.

Caught the pilot last night on Hulu and it's interesting enough to keep catching on Hulu. Not interesting enough for my wife to give up watching NCIS, though...

Yessir, Hulu is the place for this show. It gets a chance, based solely on how well Chiklis and Benz can carry a show. They're seasoned vets by now. The flip side of this is that the actors playing their kids are almost comically unappealing in every way.

I was out of town and my DVR fritzed and I missed last week's episode -- and I find myself not caring. Watched a bit of last night's episode and found myself caring even less. I'd hoped we'd get a little less angst and gloom over the powers and more gee whiz, but I guess not.

The teenage boy is such a dick, making his parents feel guilty for wondering if he has powers--when he DOES have powers. Why do they insist on writing teenagers this way? They are already so unlikable as it is, and it seems like they just amp it up.

This show needs more showcasing of powers, less angst.

Because a lot of teenagers are like this? They are self-absorbed, one-track, unreasonable idiots. It is frustrating, but not illogical.

Angst = cheap, showing powers = expensive

And also not enjoyable television. At least not in this case.

Yes. I'm a mom of a bratty teenager and she gets on my nerves daily.

But I don't want to see this on television. Give me better character development please that isn't rooted in real life. It's a superhero show, I want powers prominently on display.
Realism is fine when it's interesting and not coming across like a weak attempt to mine drama.
I've only seen the pilot and the end of the most recent ep, but that last scene was pretty entertaining. I was in the gym watching it, and the sound wasn't even on, but I could tell-- he was going to USE MATH to win at football! And then he totally used math to win at football... and I was amused.

And here's the son on NoF.

The hell was the point of having Chiklis sneak out of the house, jump across buildings, and then have Frozone get pulled over and get all race card with a cop and not show what Chiklis was doing at all??? Also, how often does a 200+lb object hit the roof of a house and leave no damage at all?

This show reminds me a lot of Voyager in that it has a neat concept, good production values and a solid cast but the worst fucking writing imaginable. I want to punch every single character in the face at least once an episode and then I want to go and do the same to the writers.
