So I know I'm young and young people are probably poorest at recognizing when they are being a shithead, but I have recently been accused of being a shithead and would like a second opinion. I don't think I was being a shithead when I was accused of such, but well, I let you be the judge.

This is from the Cracked forums, where I just recently started posting. It's about the upcoming Walking Dead TV show. I use the same handle there as here. I figure I need to know if I was really being a shithead so that I can properly adjust my postings in the future. I mean, I re-read it, and I still think I'm being pretty reasonable. That argument is probably over, in any case.

In case you are wondering, this is in fact the first time I've been so strongly insulted on the internet, and yes, this is because I have kept my posting to very civil forums. I am sheltered, and thus thin-skinned, and this will surely toughen me (internet-speaking). I also don't really want to be a shithead, and this is kind of the way I've argued for a while now.

I also might be a shithead for starting this thread here in the first place. I also might be a shithead for posting on Cracked. I might also be a shithead for writing this in an overly formal tone while constantly writing "shithead" in a lame attempt at humor. Please inform me if so.

Dude, you do have thin skin and you overreacted a bit. But then again you were trying to argue with a guy who said "Hopefully there'll be some gross special effects and shit."

Just try to continue having decent conversations with folks and don't let it bother you if someone takes a shot at you, deservedly or not.

If you post here much, you'll inevitably be called worse for far less. The anonymity and safe distance provided by a message board can have a corrosive effect on civility.

This goes both ways. Some kid practicing his skillcraft with whatever new turn of phrase he learned in Homeroom this morning at your expense doesn't trigger the same quality of emotion as an angry drunk looking for someone within an arm's reach to take out his inadequacies upon. You'll be fine.

And no, you weren't particularly offensive in the link provided.

Though I hate "to" instead of "too" almost as much.

Yes, you were being a shithead. You were trying to convince fans of a beloved intellectual property that what they love is mediocre. That is a fool's errand. I think Star Wars is the dumbest shit ever, but I don't bother popping into Star Wars message boards or threads to tell the fanbase how I feel. I could make many well reasoned points to these people as to why I thought Star Wars was insipid nonsense, but why bother? What's it going to accomplish? In the end, no property is unassailable, but people love what they love, and no one is going to convince anyone otherwise.

On the up side, you were civil and reasonable so I think there's hope for you yet.

I couldn't get through that whole page (no offense, but it's difficult enough to keep track of comings and goings on CHUD without trying to decipher the CRACKED boards too), but with that said as long as you were respectful and did your best to explain your point of view, my answer would be "no".
