Ally McBeal herself, Calista Flockhart, battles an evil ghost at a children's hospital in this Fangoria Frightfest chiller.

I mean Nestor Almendros was practically blind when he shot Days of Heaven and that's a masterpiece!
Off topic, but see also Luis Cuadrado's work on The Spirit of the Beehive.

Good review. You're right, there is a fair amount of logic breakdown. And I think Flockhart is quite bad here, especially during that BIG ACTING SCENE. My least favourite Jaume Balaguero movie.

The Mechanical Girl has an interesting look to her though (lil bit of Cenobite going on).

Ohh, good call on Spirit of the Beehive. Fucking excellent movie. Glad you brought that one up -- I need to revisit that one.

Is there a Balaguero movie you'd recommend? It seems like he has some promise even though this movie has its share of problems.

And agree with you on the Mechanical Girl. It was definitely inspired and creepily effective.

He co-directed [Rec], which is an almost perfect horror film in my opinion. It's one of the best "found footage" movies ever, along with The Blair Witch Project and Paranormal Activity. Note: there's a monster in there that makes The Mechanical Girl look like Mary Poppins.

Balaguero also made the flawed-but-stylish cult thriller (as in thriller about a cult) The Nameless, and Darkness (which as ghost stories go is superior to his Flockhart job). And he contributed the most entertaining story to the 6 Films to Keep You Awake collection, though I admit that's not really saying much. He's a solid to great horror filmmaker. Doesn't get the same attention as someone like Alexandre Aja, but he's every bit as talented.
