Plan 9 From Outer Space (1958)

Wasn't THAT bad.

After watching Ed Wood on Monday (terrific movie) i had to track down this infamous movie to see just how much of a trainwreck it was. And while it was fairly terrible, i don't think it deserves the "worst movie ever made" title it's been given.

It's actually very entertaining, in an ironic way, of course.

It's available to watch for free online at imdb if you haven't seen it. Great way to kill an hour and change at work!

It's a totally watchable and thoroughly entertaining trainwreck of a film.

Bear in mind that, at the time it was awarded the Worst Film Ever crown (occasionally disputed by Robot Monster), every lame film in the history of cinema wasn't available at everyone's digital fingertips. Instead, you'd have to hit your local rep house at midnight, and if, like me, you were a fairly dissolute college student at the time, it hit all the sweet spots of "WTF???"

In other words, while it's easy nowadays to say "I've seen worse films," back when this film was making its Golden Turkey rep, most of us HADN'T seen much worse.

First time I saw it was on a double bill with Night of the Living Dead, and I was sufficiently lubricated not to see all that much difference between the two.

Criswell remains unmatched; the policeman scratching his head with his gun runs a close second.

It's not the worst movie ever made, but it's perhaps the most entertainingly bad film you're likely to see.

I would have to go with 'The Room.'

Anyone who has seen Wood's Orgy of the Dead knows for a fact that Plan 9 From Outer Space is the very last film on his CV that should be considered the "worst film ever made". Orgy of the Dead isn't a film, its a goddamn endurance test.

Tor Johnson is kinda menacing in the role. His undead face has a certain something. Vampyra is the worst though. She's just like a wooden cardboard.

That's what makes it so special. Any other so-bad-it's-good movie inevitably has long boring filler periods. You can watch Plan 9 from beginning to end and be constantly entertained/fascinated.

Yup. I'd say it's probably the front runner in that particular category. It's a bad filmmaking epic.

It's a perfect storm of Bad Movie, with something for everyone: wobbly sets, wooden under-acting, extreme over-acting, continunity nightmares, terrible f/x, but it's endlessly interesting and oddly sweet & endearing. It's the rare kind of "bad movie" that comes around from a filmmaker that's assured of their talent, despite the complete lack of any skills.

"They laughed at vitamins!" is one of my favorite quotes in the history of cinema.

I love that the plan is going to be carried out with THREE undead. THREE!

I love that the first 8 plans failed.

I love how they can fly airplanes without steering wheels.

"Inspector Clay is dead. Murdered. And somebody's responsible!"

"Visits? Why that would indicate . . . Visitors!"

It's a CHAIR!
That amazed me. It's the back of a chair they are using as steering wheel.

Plan 9 had me the second Criswell unleashed this gem:

Yeah, out of all of Ed Wood's movies that I've seen, Plan 9 is the most watchable. Glen or Glenda on the other hand.... Yeesh.

One of my favorite things is the ridicilous amount of pointless narration that goes on as well.
