Brett Ratner doing this is interesting, this type of story is not in his wheel house and he might be able to make a decent flick out of it.

Fascinating and tragic tale, but yeah, Ratner? I have no confidence in him to tackle this with respect or restraint. Expect bombastic montages and jump cuts.

IMHO Red Dragon remains his best film, but it's a barely acceptable thriller elevated by it's AAA List cast. It does not necessarily give me any confidence that he has the skills for something like this though

I liked The Family Man, Rush Hour and Money Talks as well as Red Dragon... that shows some decent range for the guy... and to be honest almost all of the problems with X-Men 3 are due to Fox and the truncated schedule he had, to say nothing of the fact that he was working off of 2 other director's pre production.

Ratner is cotton candy, but cotton candy can be really good, and every now and then you can find a way to make cotton candy work in ways you never expect.

Analano,

Never saw FAMILY MAN or MONEY TALKS, and I was initially going to mention RUSH HOUR in my post but decided against it. It's a good if by the numbers buddy comedy, but I'm not sure that what he brought to that movie that made it work are skills that are applicable for this new proposed project

I don't think he's terrible, he's a decent everyman kind of director who is more than comfortable taking studio paychecks. He's Richard Donner without a SUPERMAN under his belt, basically. That's not reason enough to condemn the man the way some are fond of doing, but with that said, it's not IMHO reason to think he's the right guy for this project

I'd never heard this story before, but it's fascinating, and so I guess I just wish a director whose power food was something more substantive than 'cotton candy' had been tapped to tackle it

Well it is not exactly like he was tapped by a studio for this... he found the story, and has optioned it himself. In fact there is no studio right now.

I like seeing Ratner finding his own projects, it maybe, just maybe, shows a little bit of artistic vision from an otherwise capable, plain jane filmmaker.

Fair enough, can't wait to see how it turns out (or where the NK scenes will be filmed)

I assume Idaho... because those are 2 places most people have never really seen.

For the record, I just don't care enough about Ratner to hate on him.

I just thought it was funny to imagine yourself as getting a Peter Weir adaptation, and getting a Ratner film instead.

Please, no one send me hate mail....

Haha! If they go for an Asian nation, the politics will be interesting is all. Tensions are very high between SK and NK right now, so I am not sure SK (or the US Gov) would be amenable to a big Hollywood film coming in right now on this subject. China wouldn't want to be involved for obvious reasons. Hawaii stood in for NK in DIE ANOTHER DAY, but that was just for a handful of shots

That's where my interest on the location comes from

PS I just wanted to add that I love cotton candy as a food

EDIT: @ Ms Rappe: Ah, OK!

A funny visual, for sure.

I know people who worked with Ratner and they hate his guts... Hate on the guy is not unwarranted, he is a Dbag from everything I can tell. I just dig his movies, and a lot of other people do to.
