Nice piece... I disagree completely, but well written and thought out none the less!
The only rebuttal I feel compelled to share
I think there is a place in art for people who use the past to make something fresh today. Remade TV shows can be classics, covered songs can be better than the originals and using existing IPs can make for truly classic stories. I have yet to read any of these "mash-ups" so I can't judge their quality, but I have no problem giving them a shot in movie form.

If we get a vampire Lincoln film before an actual Lincoln film, I will be annoyed. Good Advocate, Nick, and I have to say I agreed with your take. CHUD is built on opinions, and it pleases me to no end that more often than not those opinions are ones I hold as well.
PS Why are studios so eager for this property? The folks who appreciate the irony of the Lincoln/Vampire thing.. they're not the same people who've made recent vampire films a success, I'm willing to bet. The folks who like Lincoln.. they are not going to want to see it either. That leaves you with the hipsters, who would sooner buy the t shirt than see the film. IMHO this reeks of SNAKES ON A PLANE 2.O

Well I think Nick is more slagging on the conceit and it's popularity as opposed to the book itself. There are a lot of people sick of the current "put undead things where they weren't before" trend. I am not one of them, I still think Zombies and Vampires are fun, but that opinion piece is more about the trend as a whole IMO.

First of all
HAhahaha. I'm totally stealing that.
Secondly, I love parodies. I love the Ben Stiller Show, even though the comedy often falls flat, and I unashamedly laugh my head off at many Weird Al songs. I grew up watching every episode of MST3K my parents could stomach listening to in the next room. However, even I find this whole classic lit/zombie mashup genre to be completely stupid. "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies" made me snicker a little from hearing the title, but never did I feel a desire to read an entire novel based on the premise.
Holy crap, I can't believe this is becoming a genre. Crime and Punishment AND LAZORS! Oliver Twizted Metal! George Washington ON THE MOON. Lets just piss all over historical legacy and the world's most brilliant artists for PEW PEW LULZ.
Anyway, that's my rant. Sorry.

"BWuahahahahahahahahahahaha" bellowed Sweet Tooth.
And then the clown jumped into his Ice Cream truck, which was a scary site to the orphans on many levels, least of which is the fact that they have never seen the technology of a car before. The crazed clown turned on the engine, and the sweet notes of the Ice Cream jingle drowned the screams of all the molested and murdered orphans.
The End.

"Please Sweet Tooth, may I have some more?" asked Oliver hungrily

As someone who has actually read the book, it's actually really well done. I'd imagine most of the genre fans reading this site would like it if they gave it a chance.
However, while I can understand that some people would expect for it to be a mash up (like "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies"), it is a completely original concept that is more in line with DC's Elsewords series. In the novel, the secret world of vampires have shaped Lincoln's entire life, and are the motivation for his political career. Grahame-Smith's writing feels completely organic and fresh.
With that said, I really don't think the novel will translate well onto the screen. While the novel is serious in tone, and focuses on the tragedies in Lincoln's life (caused by vampires), it seems like a film adaption would likely be more humorous due to the nature of the concept. It's one thing to read mock diary entries (mixed with other typical historical fiction prose) about Lincoln hunting vampires, but seeing it carried out on the screen would cross the thin line that makes it cheesy.
