International Monster Hoedown (I need help!)

Wasn't sure where to put this, so if it's wrongly placed my apologies.

I'm currently enrolled in a magazine writing class, and I'll be dead and buried before I actually do fieldwork (and by then it'll be too late, TOO LATE), so I figured that as a movie fan, I'd do a reflective listicle and call it a day. Still, I wanted something a little more entertaining than just X greatest etc. etc., so I thought maybe I'd broaden my own film horizons and check out some international horror films. Problem is...I don't really know many. This is where the help comes in.

The Goal: Picking a monster genre (vampire, zombie, mummy, were-wolfs,cats,badgers and so froth), then selecting a movie contender from a variety of countries. Movies get watched and compared, laughs are had, I pick a winner, bada-bing, bada-boom, easy A+ and I don't have to leave the couch.

So, know the best Norwegian Kaiju film no one's ever heard of? Got an Indian vampire flick that'll shame Nosferatu? Help me out, and I promise to reciprocate in the form of lavish, potentially creepy message board praise!

Cool idea. For a start, there's obviously...
  • An entire Italian zombie and giallo subgenres
  • An entire Chinese vampire subgenre
  • Japanese have their kaiju and yokai and J-ghosts
  • British and their gothic horror (Hammer, Amicus, etc)
  • Mexico's Luchador VS Monster subgenre (Santo!)

I'll mull over some leftfield stuff and post back. Zombies and slashers have probably permeated most modern culture by now.

Have you picked a monster genre yet?
