WHAT I'M THANKFUL FOR 10.4.10

Some bound monsters of the past.

Oh wow, a blast from the past indeed. I remember these! I think I read them long before I saw most of the movies, with the exception of Bride of Frankenstein.

These were definitely a gateway drug. I'd wager a sizable percentage of American Chewers between the ages of roughly 25-40 got turned onto horror movies by this series.

EDIT: Also, interestingly, it seems like no one ever owned these. Everyone remembers getting them at the library. This would certainly explain why they have kind of slipped through the cracks of our collective memory - because no one had them sitting on their shelves at home.

*raises hand*

I was able to be the de-facto espouser of monster movie mythology at elementary school because I found this collection in a corner at the public library, and read, re-read, and re-re-read them until I knew every actor, every trick, and every sequel.

Imagine my disappointment when years later I saw Frankenstein meets The Wolf Man and it was not nearly as awesome as this page of the book promised it would be:

I don't remember orange covers, but certainly it was such large-format library books that sated my thirst for movie knowledge until home video came along. I remember a green hardback (dustcover long gone) that might just have been called "Movie Monsters", and specifically, for some reason, a photo of Karloff with the caption: "The Monster's striding power recalls Wegener's Golem..."

Yes, yes, yes. I checked out and re-checked out these books again and again when I was a kid. I can even remember the way the damned things smelled. Such cool memories, and like many of you have said, I think these helped build my love of movies at an early age. I did some casual searches on ebay once, but didn't find much. I may have to have another go at it.

Aw shit I had totally forgotten about these up until I saw that snapshot of the front and back covers. It was that image of King Kong on the back that triggered it all - I OBSESSED over those books as a kid. They kept me entertained until my Mom finally trusted me and my sensibilities enough to turn over her Stephen King library.

And now I wonder how many of those books would be banned from today's libraries.

And funnily enough it was the school library from which I got them.

Turns out the library literally next door to me had a bunch of these. I checked out Dracula, Frankenstein and King Kong this weekend. Such a blast to read them again.
