Emma Stone is the new Gwen Stacy.

So the actress that looks uncannily like the comic book depiction of Mary Jane is playing Gwen Stacey?

...'kay.

Well, it looks like the whole "the role of MJ will be imminently offered to Stone" announcement was mixed up. However, I'm very satisfied with this choice, and it does demonstrate that they're trying to take the franchise in a new direction by focusing on a different (and potentially more interesting) love interest. I've had enough of MJ in live-action for now.

Yeah, I don't get this at all. Stone is the perfect MJ that Dunst should have but never could have been, and then they decided to cast her as Gwen Stacy instead. I know that she's a natural blonde, but she has been a redhair in several of her most famous movies like Superbad, Zombieland, and Easy A; why make her a blonde in Spider-man?

I'm irrationally displeased that she's not a natural redhead, and I like blonde women.

Kind of like the whole Kristen Dunst is a natural blond while Bryce Dallas Howard is a natural red head.

And ironically, Dunst could have been a great Gwen Stacy.

For those who like their carpets and drapes to match, this is excellent news.
Nicely done. But she's really a blond? Most pictures show her as a redhead.

And I'm just happy she's in it. Some good casting news. Still iffy on it - it feels too much like a rush job, ala X3 - but I guess it could turn out OK.

If I'm not mistaken, Gwen Stacy is the primary love interest in the script and MJ is introduced, albeit as a minor character, as a set-up for to have something to develop her storyline with in subsequent films. Perhaps the studio simply didn't want to have the script undergo significant re-writes and so, instead of saving Stone for the sequel, they cast her as Gwen Stacey instead to have a decently marketable name front-and-center. Considering her solid relationship with the studio for the past few films, I can see why she was desirable to them.

It's not like Stone looks nothing like Gwen once you get past hair color:

She's Romita-esque no matter how you look at it.

Looks like this opens up the MJ role for Christina Hendricks.
Yeah, I know.

Her attitude and looks I think make her a way better MJ. This is very strange. I mean first Bryce Dallas Howard (a redhead) plays Gwen Stacy and now Emma Stone (a blonde who has been a redhead for a while and is 100% better as a redhead) is now playing Gwen Stacy.

She is indeed a natural blond. She dyed her hair red to stand out from the pack of blondes running around Hollywood, at the advice of Greg Mottola, who directed her in Superbad.

I sort of get why she'd go for Gwen. She'll get a big career bump without having to be committed to several sequels because she'll most likely die in the first film. She gets exposure and can move the hell on to other things. Rather smart move, if that's indeed why she's going to be Gwen rather than MJ.

Further details about the script/plot should be under SPOILER or invisio-text. Thanks.

Great move for Stone. One film and she's out. Also she will get a lot of buzz from this.

Ahh. I vastly prefer her as a redhead, but then I vastly prefer redheads, so there you go.

Emma Stone as...Gwen Stacey? Awesome! MJ, was...Harry's Gal, in the early Spider-Man comics. Gwen is Peter Parkers true love, in the comics, so it is good that she is featured in this new, and hopefully...Better Spider-Man Trilogy!

I like Emma Stone. I saw a pic of her as blonde and she is SUPER good looking. (Not that she isn't as a red head). I think she will make a great Gwen!

OK I guess. I'd have loved her as MJ but she can pull Gwen Stacy off both as a look and a character easily. I just want them to give her as many lines as possible.

Remember those crazy Spider Man 3 rumors that they would reverse the fates of MJ and Gwen, because Dunst wanted out, and Howard was happy to be in?

What if they're still thinking about doing something like that? I'm not sure how it would work if MJ is a secondary character. But it would interesting to tinker with the mythology ... though by now, everyone probably wants a Spidey that follows it closer.
