First heard this album in high school when a buddy made me a cassette. I listened to it in my car for the rest of the year and it still has a very warm place in my heart. Thanks for this one.

Yeah I've gone all the way through it at least once a day since I first heard it. I need to give it a rest soon lest I burn out on it, but if I were so inclined to make a Favorite Albums of All Time list, this would most certainly rank very, very high.

"Millhaven" is fine and all, but for me nothing beats the sneering, misogynistic, homoerotic take on "Stagger Lee". Completely over the top, completely awesome.

A masterpiece. Followed by The Boatman's Call, a radically different but no less brilliant album. He's really great live if you ever get a chance to see him and Bad Seeds or Grinderman.

See, that's the one that grabbed me on first listen, but the more times I went through it and the more that I digested it, that kinda dropped to one of the lesser tracks, if you can say that about anything on this album. I still dig the shit out of it but it's almost too over the top.

And yeah - I've done this, "Tender Prey" and "Dig, Lazarus, Dig," as well as the first Grinderman. Big fan of all of it.

Saw him at the Hollywood Bowl right after LAZARUS came out. Guy is still punkin' out like a young man. My girlfriend at the time had never even heard of him and was an instant convert.

The Curse of Millhaven is quite a song. It should be noted that Nick Cave and Co. treat this album as satire. O'Malley's Bar is easily one of the wildest stories in music.

I became interested in Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds when I heard Red Right Hand in Dumb & Dumber and Scream. I was about 12 at the time and Murder Ballads had just been released. I saw the album on a BMG 12 CDs for $1 flyer for a while, then I committed. In fact I just gave that disc to an aunt two weeks ago after a family funeral.

Note: Stagger Lee is intense live, especially when Nick Cave takes it to the next level with "Chapter 2" where Stagger Lee kills the Devil come from Hell.

Back in '96 it seemed like I couldn't turn on the TV without seeing Nick and Kylie dueting away about Wild Roses. That and Henry Lee got plenty of radio play too.

I was already a Nick Cave fan by then, having fallen hard for Let Love In (which remains one of my top ten albums of the 90s), but I didn't fall as hard for Murder Ballads or any of the subsequent records. It's funny Andrew mentions Cave and co treat it like satire because when Murder Ballads came out it felt almost like self parody to me, like it was so Nick Cave it verged on the ridiculous. On the plus side it's a very fun kind of verging on the ridiculous, and I'll never skip songs (or change the station) when they come on.

I've seen them live twice and loved it, and looking forward to seeing if Grinderman can blow my socks off early next year when they head on out my way. The Stooges are on the same bill so it should be quite the evening.

I hate you Bucho. In a jealous kind of way. I bet you can see the Finn Brothers whenever you want too. All I have is my 7 Worlds Collide DVD.

Don't be jealous of us NZers mate, our status as the most isolated nation on the Earth means we see far fewer international touring acts than you North Americans and the music fans of Yurp, and that's especially true of the sort of second and third (financial) tier acts who tend to be the most interesting. For example, we'll get U2 and Pink but the Afghan Whigs never played here.

But yeah, sometimes we'll Collide with Tim or Neil down at the (organic food) shops or at the beach, and we do get a few visits from the Aussies like Nick and co though, which is delightful, although Princess Kylie hasn't graced us for quite some time.

I am very sure you will enjoy your time at BIG DAY OUT seeing GRINDERMAN. Have a Merry XMAS and a Happy New Year! Remember to get some pussy too. Cheers.

First time I heard any version of Stagger Lee that I recognized, it was Samuel L Jackson's rendition in Black Snake Moan, and I was blown away at how bad-ass and tailor-made for him.

Then I heard the Nick Cave version. Holy Fucking Shit.
