RAIMI DECIDES ON OZ RATHER THAN AZEROTH

It's Oz for Raimi instead of Warcraft.

Ah well. I'll see pretty much anything Raimi makes but I was taking perverse pleasure in the idea of Sam Raimi working on such an open-ended franchise like Warcraft.

The fact that this is being re-written by David Lindsay-Abaire is really interesting. He's a powerful dramatic and darkly comedic writer. The trio of Lindsay-Abaire, Downey, Jr. and Raimi sounds fantastic.

I'm not so certain of that, those Blizzard folks are very protective when it comes to their properties. Wouldn't surprise me if in a week we found out that Raimi left because he couldn't do his own thing with Warcraft...

Warcraft did seem like a better fit for him though.

I absolutely hate it when people say this, but this particular news brings about one reaction for me, "Meh." I love Raimi and all, but I don't need a whimsical origin story of the fucking Wizard of Oz. I see disaster written all over this, personally.

Have you seen or read anything by Lindsay-Abaire? Because he's a dramatist that instills a bit of faith in this project.

Yes, I have, sir. I've seen too many fantastic writers come aboard tent-pole projects to have their scripts raped into mediocrity to not be worried that the same will happen here. Oh, and he fucking wrote Robots AND Inkheart, so it's not like he can't produce a piece of shit.

I don't know man, when you read those names it's a hard offer to refuse. And Raimi has always been one of my favorites, so whatever he signs on to I'm willing to give the project the benefit of the doubt.

Really looking forward to see him work with RDJ as well.

And my bit of faith just went up in flames. I didn't know that.

Perhaps Blizzard is very particular about how their IP is presented in film, but at least the world feels bigger than Oz and so there are fewer expectation as to what a Warcraft film would be about. Oz has far fewer story elements and a lot more specific expectations as to what constitutes a story that takes place there.

Disclaimer: I'm saying the following stuff as someone who doesn't play WoW and has only seen the Wizard of Oz a few times

If this was anything other than a Disney movie and/or something related to The Wizard of Oz, I'd be all over this.

I'd rather see Tim Burton and Johnny Depp be working on this so that I wouldn't care and get mad at the gods for allowing this to happen.

All of the above for me too. WoW has fewer narrative restrictions. If Blizzard shot it down because Raimi was getting too creative with their franchise (SHOCK HORROR) then...well, that pretty much speaks to everything that's wrong with Hollywood these days.

I'm personally more interested in why he's really no longer on WoW than him moving onto a project that, even with the talent involved, doesn't interest me in the slightest. I mean honestly, is there anyone out there really clamoring for an Oz prequel?
No matter who's involved I just cannot muster a single ounce of enthusiasm for this project.

You guys like ice cream? Well here's some rock salt...
so whats happening to Warcraft now, is it still on track or canned?

So much hype for Raimi to be attached to WOW("Finally a real director doing a video game movie") and now this, I guess the shit fest video game movie curse lives on
post #16 of 25
I really wish this talent wasn't involved in making another OZ film. Could turn out quite good, but I just can't feel too interested in it at this stage.

My guess would probably be butting heads with Chris Metzen from Blizzard. When it comes to Blizzard lore Metzen's word is the word of God. If he and Raimi came to a disagreement Raimi would either have to back down or leave. So my guess, completely out of my ass, is that the second thing happened. Blizzard has said time and time again that the movie either happens 100% their way or it doesn't happen at all.

Do Blizzard sit in on Games Workshop meetings or something?
Your statement reflects the truth in more ways than one.

Raimi should make a live action Space Marine movie to spite Blizzard and make me extremely happy!
There's a Space Marine cgi movie already being made. And it's about the best Space Marines too.

No room for them, what with all the Gears of War creators in the room
post #23 of 25
I don't know that I'm that crushed about Raimi not dipping his toes into the Warcraft waters, but I also don't know that I really care about him making an Oz movie. It's Raimi, so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt; I just don't find the idea all that exciting.
So this OZ movie will focus on the Wizard himself? I was hoping they'd have a big-screen adaptation of the Broadway hit Wicked instead; the story of the Wicked Witch seemed much more interesting than the Emerald Wizard imo.

My feelings on the works of L Frank Baum are well known, so I won't bore you with another anti Oz polemic. Instead I am posting simply to go on the record in opposition to this film and to voice my disappointment that a major studio is financing this.

I won't be posting about this movie again (unless there is some sort of casting announcement that forces me to comment on that actors involvement), but needed to put my view out there all the same

PS Also sad to see Rami leave the WARCRAFT film. I went through a period where I was hooked to WC2:TOD, but never got into WOW. All the same, I have a certain fondness for the series and it's locations and it's setting/creatures, and I'd have liked to have gotten the chance to see that universe on the big screen (war turtles!)
