Where has my hard drive gone?

My laptop has a 60gb hard drive.

There's about 20gb taken up by photos, word docs and videos etc.

There's a few extra programs - itunes, google earth, a few others.

But currently there is only 4gb free, or so I'm told.

So what is taking up the rest of the space? I can't believe normal programs needed to run the computer take up 35gb.

Anybody have similar issues? Any solutions? I've run disk defragmenter and checked for errors. Any thing else I could delete without affecting performance? Thanks.

Windows & inevitable' bloatware 10 GB.
Windows recovery uses a lot of GB if you didn't set a maximum amount spend on it. (Which windows are you running?)
Browser history consumes a lot too.

I have no idea. It was a pain in the ass on 98' (but I found a way to edit registry that worked fine). Educated guess on XP and newer: Control panel > Security center and restore > on the left panel you can change it.

I use Windirstat for such things. It scans the drive and puts out a pretty had diagram showing how your disk space is used.

Thanks. I looked at my files, and it appears that my Windows folder has 19GB. For example, 'winsxs' is 10GB! Some of this stuff must be important. But not all of it.

Stuff like 'internet explorer peer objects'. There's hundreds of them. Most created this year. (The laptop is 3 years old) I must be able to dele them.
