I'm probably about 4 days early, but who's counting.

You Yankee fans.

I have this nagging suspicion that Rivera retires. And that Gardner gets traded. And that Jeter's contract negotiations get a little bit cantankerous. And that they don't get Cliff Lee (but do get Crawford and Scott Downs and maybe Brandon Webb). And they have a new manager.
There's no way in hell the Yankees don't get Cliff Lee. They absolutely must have him considering the state of the Yankee starting pitching staff. I bet they'll keep Gardner and let Crawford go elsewhere, but I also wouldn't be surprised in the least if Crawford heads to NY.

I still don't understand why Girardi would leave the best job in baseball to manage the fucking Cubs. Lee will be on the team too. And then Cleveland will die a little bit more inside.
Well, he's won the World Series with Yankees, both as player and manager. Not much left to do - Girardi's a Chicago guy, his old man is back there and not doing too well, and it would render unto him incredible street cred if he were to help bring the Cubs back into contention (easier said than done). The Cubs are one of those teams that has money but don't seem to know how to spend it quite right. I see Girardi staying in NY but wouldn't be shocked (or happy) to see him return to where he started.

I think if Lee doesn't go to the Yanks it would be a huge upset. Crawford I'm not so sure about. There's just no place to put him without trading somebody else first. If you have seen any of my previous posts you will come to realize that I am not a huge fan of Girardi. He can go as far as I'm concerned...the machine will roll on without him.

He'd be crazy to leave NY. Why not keep winning?

He will never be a legend here. If he wins in Chicago he becomes a GOD.
The only way a Yankee Manager has a good year is if the Yanks win the World Series. Anything short of that and you're a bum. That has to take its toll. I think there would be pressure in Chicago too, just not nearly the level of what it is now.
It's still the best managerial job in baseball. Chicago won't pay him the same amount (if they are big spenders why not throw a bunch of money in Torre's direction?), and it's a shittier job. I'll be shocked if he voluntarily ups and leaves for that gig.

The Yankees have to pay Derek Jeter enough money to make him want to get up in the morning and leave this.

So how many zeroes has Cashman added and erased from his check to Cliff Lee in the past three days?

The current offer is 3 yrs/$29 million, club option on the 4th year for $5 million. Prior to getting lit up last night it was 8 yrs/$170 million. When he spins a masterful 3 hit shutout in game 5 it will balloon up to 10 years/$∞.

Also, I think I want to trade Burnett for Zito if the Giants kick in some cabbage to negate the difference in salary remaining. And Swisher/Jesus Moreno/ something else to KC for Grienke.
Looks like Girardi is coming back. Yay?

I like the Burnett for Zito idea, not crazy about Grienke...doesn't he have anxiety issues? They say Montero can hit and he will take playing time from Posada, two things the Yankees need. I say keep him.
Girardi works for the Yankees as the stars will listen to him. He has to, however, dump the blue binder.

Greinke has stated he'd never play in New York. He can barely handle the pressure of KC.

There are so many Yankees to dump right now, Johnson and Vasquez being the two who have no place on next years team. Swisher or Gardner gets traded in Crawford signs.

Posada should retire, but he'll steal a two year deal to be DH, lead A-Rod to be DH in 2013 and Jeter's move to third.

I never knew that Greinke was a basket case. Oh well.

Johnson's option was declined, which I am pretty sure led to him going on the 15 day DL with hurt feelings.

Posada has one more year on his deal, right? He absolutely should not catch more than 20 or so games next year.
Girardi and the Yankees agreed to a 3 year/$9 million deal today

Thank you for that.

There really is no reason Posada should play much other than out of some sort of loyalty. They say Montero doesn't have a ton of experience catching, but he can't be any worse than Posada defensively.

That's awesome, though I think officially it's now known as The Nick Johnson List.

So Hank fires what I imagine is the first salvo by decreeing negotiations may get "messy". I'm thinking Jeter is looking at 3 years low 40's at best.

He's not retiring, not within spitting distance of 3000 hits. He has nowhere else to go (Where? Queens? Tampa? Boston?). He really has ZERO options. The only decision is whether or not he wants it to get "messy".
There's no way Jeter gets anything less than 15 a year from NYY. He's not worth that to any other team, mind you. There's no way Hank would be stupid enough to piss off Jeter or Rivera and cause them to leave. The fanbase would crucify him.
It's an interesting pile of leverage each side has. Jeter can't even begin to pretend that he would want to play somewhere else, and knows damn well the Yankees' lowest offer will be twice as high as any other team, anyway.

The Steinbrenners have literally no PR leverage at all. None. There is nothing they could ever say, or explain, or do if this does not go smoothly that would quell a full revolt from the fans.
