Damn, damn, DAMN...I love the vocal treatment you guys put on "Witch Doctor". It's an awesome scuzzy groover, but the vocals are catchy as shit. Well done, Nick and Steve...seriously.

Love, love, LOVE these two rockers.

"Decide" has what is probably my favorite harmony vocal we've ever had, and you did it all by your lonesome, Nunz. That chorus is just pure fist-pumping power.

Likewise, I love the groove and "raaaaawk" of "Signs of Life. The vocals threw me at first because they're so restrained compared to the main riff, but by the end of my second listen, I was hooked.

Great stuff, all.

I only had Decide, Electric Soup and Signs of Life for some reason.

 

Signs of Life is kind of early Van Haleny in the gat department, which is a fine thing. A fine thing indeed. I normally hate pinched harmonics when anyone except Eddie VH plays them but I'll totally make an exception for Micah Robinson's blessed fingersmithery.

 

Electric Soup's main riff is beautifully Keef-esque and with that crashy beat pumping the groove along like a dream it's great to drive to on these balmy South Pacific summer days. A neat bunch of vocal melodies all over it too.

 

But Decide is the real treasure here for me. Probably my favourite vocal meldodies of any CHUD House Band tune over some ace riffs from a twin gat attack and John really on point playing a beat he seems to love to the point it's become practically a signature for him. That simple but grunty three note descending vocal melody which opens with "Internment ... Endearment ... etc is a cracker but the "Deciiiiiiiiiiide" chorus vocals especially kick my ass all the way to oblivion and back. This joint is magic. One of the best tunes I've heard in 2011 from anyone anywhere.

Thanks, Bucho! Funny thing is, I think I may have done more pinched harmonics on "Electric Soup", only instead of in the more obvious 80s way with that exaggerated vibrato, it was more of Billy Gibbons' style where it just adds extra twang and spice to a bent note (which is almost all I play on that song). But we really appreciate the feedback, sir. Yes we do!

Gorgeous in the extreme, especially the vocal arrangements/harmonies. Add a little reverb, and people might think it's The Zombies up in this motherfucker....

I'm surprised you liked the solo, because it's the EXACT same one I did on Sidewinder all those years ago. If nothing else, I can repeat myself better than anyone around.

 

And by the way, I think this album is beyond tremendous. Nick has done such an incredible job with the production, but he doesn't get enough credit for it. There's a lot going on in most of the tunes, and he's done a wonderful job navigating through all the harmonics, bass slides and drum rolls... it's time he gets some notice for the work.

Oh man...without a doubt. Not just with our futzing about, but also all of the vocal layering that he does to elevate songs like this. Doing harmonies is NOT easy as I found out when I decided to play and sing everything on my solo records. Plus, I've been enjoying his increased bass presence.

By the way, Hamburger Helper is fucking SWEET! The whole thing cooks but the soloing really shoots it into the stratosphere.

 

I love everything about Your Lies too, again with the lead gats leading the way. Some really cool harmonic ideas in that ace climbing riff after "mighty phrase" and more wildly superfun soloing.

 

I like some of the ideas in the mellower tracks - espcially the Middle Eastern kind of harpsichord-sounding section (0:53) of If The Word Gets Out - and the sounds too but overall they haven't grabbed me like the gruntier tunes.

It was pretty great. It's a scenic flight package where they get you on the controls a fair bit of the time, even take-off and landing which scared the shit out of me.

 

And the Micah-gat was a big part of why I chose that particular track.
