House (1986)

Finally got around to this and it's a fucking blast. What a fun, goofy, spooky horror experience. They don't make 'em like this anymore. Feels like if Amblin produced The Evil Dead, a fun, breezy horror-comedy that has clearly not gotten its dues in the past. I love that Richard Moll plays a 'Nam zombie and George Wendt is a great foil to the very good William Katt.

Also, in a sort of case of reverse psychology in terms of my own personal movie code, this movie totally does NOT deserve an R rating. It'd get a PG-13 without any cuts today, and if they ever (god help me) remade it they wouldn't have to tame it at all.

This is one of my favorite movies from the 80's. Pacing-wise it's a bit all over the place, but I still love the movie.

I haven't seen it in years, but I would love to. I even went so far as to try and see the sequels. I could never find the 3rd one because it was Canadian and titled differently from what I recall.

"House 3" was retitled "The Horror Show" and stars Lance Henriksen and Brion James, the latter as an executed serial killer who returns in ghostly form to haunt the fuck out of Henriksen's world-weary detective. Definitely worth a look, but tonally inconsistent with the previous two "House" flicks.

No.

Oh, come on. That's not fair. House II certainly isn't a great flick, and it definitely doesn't come close to the first, but it's still a lot of fun to watch.

It's all comedy, no horror. And the comedy isn't that good.

And I say this as a die-hard Arye Gross fan.

Maybe it's just me, then. I agree with every point you made, yet I still enjoy watching it from time to time.

And being a die-hard Arye Gross fan is a testament to greatness, good sir.

House 2 is pretty terrible, but fun enough I suppose. It's not like the first sets the bar that high.

However, House 4 is the worst kind of terrible.

Out of curiosity I wanted to see if the "franchise" ever got more sequels, and stumbled across the fact that Fred Dekker wrote the story for House!

I haven't watched the first two House movies in a long time, but I enjoyed them when I watched them years ago.

Yeah this was a goofy fun romp they just don't make em like this anymore. William Katt and Richard Moll do great work. Wendt does a nice job as well.

Love the hot neighbor as well.

While this is true, I still cherish the wonderfully surreal guest appearance by John Ratzenberger as an electrician/adventurer Bill Towner. Almost justifies the movies existence.

The other way round. It was made as "The Horror Show" and retitled House 3 just before the release.

I loved it as a kid. Own it on DVD (double feature from Anchor Bay). It's not great, but it's imaginative and WTF. Undead cowboys, crystal skulls, parallel worlds, pterodactyls (and other weirder creatures), etc. Plays more like "Full Moon's take on Amazing Stories" than horror.
