They're letting Neville have his Eowyn moment. Awesome.

Its also really fascinating that they keep so much of the series' history just lying around. For a series that's officially been running nigh on to 10 years, thats just really great.

Uh, wow. Talk about a recipe for disaster. You'd think that figuring out where to split the stories would have been the FIRST thing they did. I can't see that going well. But then, I think the last book was a bloated mess anyway.

Those sets have to be incredible. And the crew spending over 10 years on the films. This is one of the few long term franchises that will be worth remembering for years to come.

In 20 years, we'll be seeing behind the scene documentaries made about the series.

I know there are some complaints about Deathly Hallows being "bloated", as The Prankster has reminded me, but I believe that DH is the best book in the series, dense where it counts with some ridiculously impressive imagination (the excellent backstory of the Hallows, the concept of Horcruxes, etc) and a finale of not only action but emotional resonance that tugged on my heartstrings repeatedly. I'm still disappointed that I'll have to wait until Part II to see the Gringotts break-in sequence, so exciting to read in the book (especially with Griphook's betrayal and the multiplying objects), realized.

I don't think it's especially condemning that they didn't know where the split would be so early. IMHO, it's actually understandable because it determines not only the ending of Part I, but the beginning of Part II and therefore a bit of the pacing for each. Creatively speaking, I think it's wise to see how the movie takes shape during filming and allow the decision of the split's placement to naturally come to be with that process.

Kind of light. Expected to see some pics from the set visit but I guess that wasn't allowed?

The problem is that, based on the book, there's no logical place for the split. They just wander around collecting Plot Coupons until it's time for the big finale.

Which is a problem with the series as a whole, too. A lot of fantasy writers mistake padding--usually in the form of the characters wandering around a lot--for epic sprawl, and Rowling's no different; she just swaps out "going to school" for "wandering around collecting magical items" (until the last book, of course). At least "going to school" is the kind of activity we can relate to in our everyday lives, but there was still no real reason to spend seven books on it. I maintain that you could cover most of the dramatically significant plot points of the HP books in three or four books, maybe even less.

Then there's the fact that the series follows the boring, cliched "Joseph Campbell via Star Wars" hero's journey, complete with bland protagonist, simplistically evil villain, and stock parental issues.

OK, I shouldn't get started on this series and how overrated it is. I'll just turn it over to Chris Bird, as I always do.

Gotta say I'm going to miss Devin's unbridled, genuine enthusiasm for this series.
